Computer-assisted techniques to enhance transformative learning in first-year literature courses

When students use computers as learning tools, the whole process of learning, and, indeed, the learners themselves, are transformed. This article illustrates some techniques that foster transformative learning in computer-assisted first-year literature classes: first, a lesson plan on A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning that uses Microsoft Word functions, including format painter, tables, and annotation to explore meaning in context; second, a plan for learners to use subconference options in the Daedalus Interactive Writing Environment to analyze Oedipus Rex; finally, a demonstration of how students engage in a meta-reflection process as they explore Barn Burning with Freelance Graphics.Marguerite Jamieson is an English instructor at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Maryland, and a doctoral student at George Mason University. Her research interests include forming bridges between adult learning theory and contemporary literary theory — especially drawing on transformational learning theory and the work of Mikhail Bakhtin and Lev Vygotsky.Rebecca Kajs holds a doctorate in English from Texas Woman's University with a concentration in rhetoric. For ten years, she taught the use of heuristic tools for reading analysis at the University of Texas at Arlington. She is currently an associate professor of English and Philosophy at Anne Arundel Community College.Anne Agee holds a doctorate in rhetoric from The Catholic University of America. A professor of English and formerly director of the Humanities Computer Center at Anne Arundel Community College, she is currently the college's Coordinator of Instructional Technology. Dr. Agee and Professor Jamieson have collaborated in a study of the learning environment in a computer classroom, the results of which were published in the Fall 1995 issue of Teaching/Learning Conversations. Dr. Agee has also published Using [Daedalus] InterChange as a Teachers' Journal in the Fall 1995 issue of Wings.

Lester Hill Revisited

Abstract

Lester Sanders Hill (1890–1961) is best known for the Hill cipher which he published in 1929. However, there seem to be four periods of Hill's career. First, in 1926 and 1927, Hill published a series of papers on mathematical error-detection. Hill's ideas for error-detection are similar to the ideas he used in his cipher. Next, in 1929 and 1931, Hill published two papers that describe the Hill cipher. The third period of Hill's career, from 1927 until 1960, was the time he served on the mathematics faculty of Hunter College. During his time at Hunter College, Hill seems to have had a relationship with the Navy in which he served during World War I. Finally, while teaching at Hunter College, in the 1950s, Hill wrote his “later papers” on cryptography, which were not published but were sent to Naval Communications.     

Optimisation of isolation and purification of the jack bean enzyme urease by extraction and subsequent crystallization

A detailed investigation into the isolation by extraction and the purification by crystallization of the enzyme urease from jack bean meal is presented with a view to developing a large-scale process. The effect of different extraction solvents and additives upon the resulting crystals is characterised in terms of crystal size, protein yield and protein purity. The enzymatic activity of urease is exploited in order to quantify the amount and purity of the protein obtained. The extraction procedure was optimised and all stages of the process were monitored in order to provide as detailed a picture as possible of the impact of different process stages upon the intermediate products. Almost all protein is extracted in a single extraction step. Further extraction steps using the same meal but fresh solvent yield only small additional protein yields. Less than 10% of total protein is extracted in a second step, less than 3% in a third extraction. Different solvents lead to clear differences in product quality, with no single solvent optimising all quality criteria. In addition, the point at which the acetone precipitant is introduced into the process has a clear influence on the product. Judicious choice of extraction conditions can significantly increase the size of the urease crystals at the cost of product purity, quantified by specific activity. High product purity (a maximum 138-fold increase in purity was observed with a maximum yield of 8.4%), in contrast, leads to smaller crystals. Comparison to the purest commercially available urease revealed a similar urease content.

针对生物显微镜的使用需求,提出一种台式显微仪器的“人仪一体化”作业空间设计原则。“人仪一体化”的作业空间以操作者为中心,最大程度地提高操作者的作业效率和舒适度,减轻作业疲劳;针对生物显微镜的作业特点及工作路径,设计了3种作业空间布局方案;利用Jack软件对不同方案进行了任务用时和能耗评价;完成了作业姿态的操作舒适性对比实验,并对颈肩部主要肌肉的表面肌电均方根(RMS)值进行了配对T检验。结果表明转向一侧的头夹肌及对应一侧的胸锁乳突肌最为敏感、载荷变化较大,其RMS的平均变化率分别为56.4%和8.4%,并结合操作者主观评价最终确定了重叠型为最优布局形式。此评估方法验证了“人仪一体化”作业空间设计原则的有效性,可为相关显微仪器设备的作业空间设计起到一定指导作用。

Jack Botwinick (1923-2006).

This article presents an obituary for Jack Botwinick, a pioneering researcher and writer on the psychology of aging. Jack died February 12, 2006, in St. Louis, Missouri, after being diagnosed with inoperable lung and brain cancer in mid- December 2005. He is survived by his wife, Joan, three daughters, and four granddaughters, as well as the many colleagues and former students who benefited from his warm concern and valued advice.
