Neuropsychological evidence for visual- and motor-based affordance: Effects of reference frame and object–hand congruence.

Two experiments are reported that use patients with visual extinction to examine how visual attention is influenced by action information in images. In Experiment 1 patients saw images of objects that were either correctly or incorrectly colocated for action, with the objects held by hands that were congruent or incongruent with those used premorbidly by the patients. The images were also shown from a 1st- and 3rd-person perspective. There was an overall reduction in extinction for objects colocated for action. In addition, there was an extra benefit when the objects were held in hands congruent with those used by the patients and when the objects were seen from a 1st-person perspective. This last result fits with an effect of motor simulation, over and above a purely visual effect based on positioning objects correctly for action. Experiment 2 showed that effects of hand congruence could emerge with images depicted from a 3rd-person perspective when patients saw themselves holding the objects. The data indicate 2 effects of action information on extinction: (a) an effect of colocating objects for action, which does not depend on a self-reference frame (a visual effect), and (b) an effect sensitive to object–hand congruence, which does depend on a self-reference frame (a motor-based effect). The self-reference frame is induced when stimuli are viewed from a 1st-person perspective and when an image of the self is seen from a 3rd-person perspective. Therapists’ use of congruence in nondirective play therapy and filial therapy.

Although the U.S. child-centered approaches of Garry Landreth and Louise Guerney have the same principles and practice skills as nondirective play therapy as practiced by therapists trained at the University of York, there are a few differences in their approach. Therapists’ practice of “congruence” is actively encouraged for York-trained therapists but not for Landreth and Guerney-trained therapists. The theoretical and practice rationales for expressing congruence that underlie the York approach are examined here, as well as potential pitfalls. Examples of therapists and parents verbally expressing their congruent feelings in therapy are given from both play therapy and filial therapy practice. "Effects of interest—major congruence, motivation, and academic performance on timely degree attainment": Correction to Allen and Robbins (2010).

Reports an error in "Effects of interest–major congruence, motivation, and academic performance on timely degree attainment" by Jeff Allen and Steve Robbins (Journal of Counseling Psychology, 2010[Jan], Vol 57[1], 23-35). Using longitudinal student data from 15 four-year (n = 3,072) and 13 (n = 788) two-year postsecondary institutions, the authors tested the effects of interest–major congruence, motivation, and 1st-year academic performance on timely degree completion. Findings suggest that interest–major congruence has a direct effect on timely degree completion at both institutional settings and that motivation has indirect effects (via 1st-year academic performance). The total effects of both interest–major congruence and motivation on timely degree completion underscore the importance of both constructs in understanding student adjustment and postsecondary success. Congruence/genuineness.

Congruence or genuineness is a relational quality that has been highly prized throughout the history of psychotherapy, but of diminished research interest in recent years. In this article, we define and provide examples of this attribute of the therapy relationship and present an original meta-analytic review of the empirical literature showing its relation to improvement. Analysis of 16 studies (k), representing 863 patients (N), resulted in a weighted aggregate ES (r) of .24 (p = .003; 95% CI = .12 to .36). Moderators of the association between congruence and treatment outcome are examined, and limitations of the extant research are discussed as well. A new geometrical approach to one-parameter spatial motion

The geometry and kinematics of one-parameter dual spherical motions is presented using Study’s dual-line coordinates. The relations between invariants of the axodes are expressed in simple form with geometrical reasoning and explanation. In terms of this, the dual version of associated space curves is demonstrated for a ruled surface to be associated with the axodes of the motion. The relative motion between the axodes is used for deriving the geometry and kinematics of the paths instantaneously traced in the fixed space by a line associated with the moving axode. Especially, the distribution parameter and the inflection-line congruence are investigated. Furthermore, a new metric is developed and used to investigate the geometrical properties and kinematics of line trajectory as well as Disteli axis. Finally, as an application an example is put forward and explained in detail.

Probabilistic Barbed Congruence

This paper defines a probabilistic barbed congruence which turns out to coincide with observational equivalence in a probabilistic extension of CCS. Based on this coincidence result, we provide a sound and complete axiomatisation for the barbed congruence in a finite fragment of probabilistic CCS.     

Divide and Congruence Applied to η-Bisimulation

We present congruence formats for η- and rooted η-bisimulation equivalence. These formats are derived using a method for decomposing modal formulas in process algebra. To decide whether a process algebra term satisfies a modal formula, one can check whether its subterms satisfy formulas that are obtained by decomposing the original formula. The decomposition uses the structural operational semantics that underlies the process algebra.
