On the ontological expressiveness of information systems analysis and design grammars

Abstract. Information systems analysis and design (ISAD) methodologies provide facilities for describing existing or conceived real-world systems. These facilities are ontologically expressive if they are capable of describing all real-world phenomena completely and clearly. In this paper we formally examine the notion of the ontological expressiveness of a grammar and discuss some of its implications for the design and use of ISAD methodologies. We identify some generic ways in which ontological expressiveness may be undermined in a grammar and some potential consequences of these violations. We also examine ontological expressiveness within the context of some other desirable features that might be considered in the design of ISAD methodologies.

On the Expressiveness of Higher Dimensional Automata: (Extended Abstract)

In this paper I compare the expressive power of several models of concurrency based on their ability to represent causal dependence. To this end, I translate these models, in behaviour preserving ways, into the model of higher dimensional automata, which is the most expressive model under investigation. In particular, I propose four different translations of Petri nets, corresponding to the four different computational interpretations of nets found in the literature.I also extend various equivalence relations for concurrent systems to higher dimensional automata. These include the history preserving bisimulation, which is the coarsest equivalence that fully respects branching time, causality and their interplay, as well as the ST-bisimulation, a branching time respecting equivalence that takes causality into account to the extent that it is expressible by actions overlapping in time. Through their embeddings in higher dimensional automata, it is now well-defined whether members of different models of concurrency are equivalent.     

Expressiveness of Probabilistic π-calculus

In this work we propose a probabilistic extension of the π-calculus. The main novelty is a probabilistic mixed choice operator, that is, a choice construct with a probability distribution on the branches, and where input and output actions can both occur as guards. We develop the operational semantics of this calculus, and then we investigate its expressiveness. In particular, we compare it with the sublanguage with the two separate choices, where input and output guards are not allowed together in the same choice construct. Our main result is that the separate choices can encode the mixed one. Further, we show that input-guarded choice can encode output-guarded choice and viceversa. In contrast, we conjecture that neither of them can encode the pair of the two separate choices.

Name-Passing in an Ambient-Like Calculus and Its Proof Using Spatial Logic

This paper studies a restricted version of the ambient calculus. We only allow single-threaded ambients migrating in a network of immobile ambients, exchanging payloads, and delivering them. With this restriction, we arrive at a calculus free from grave interferences. In previous works, this is only possible by sophisticated type systems.We focus on the expressiveness of the restricted calculus. We show that we can still repeat Zimmer's encoding of name-passing in our calculus. Moreover, we prove a stronger operational correspon- dence result using a novel spatial logic, which specifies spatial properties of processes invariant to process reductions.

Parental expressed emotion toward children: Prediction from early family functioning.

Expressed emotion (EE), an index of family member criticism and emotional overinvolvement, predicts outcome among adults and children with mental disorders. However, limited research exists on factors contributing to EE. Aims of the current study were to (a) examine EE in mothers of young children; (b) assess relationships between demographic factors and EE in a diverse sample; and (c) investigate whether family stress and functioning, including quality of marital relationship, life events, maternal stress, and family environment, predict EE. In the current study, 276 mothers completed questionnaires when their children were between 1 and 3 years of age and a measure of EE when their children were in kindergarten. Results indicated that family expressiveness was the most consistent predictor of EE. Further research seems warranted to better delineate associations between family functioning and EE.
