Structural load alleviation using distributed delay shaper: Application to flexible aircraft

Lightweight flexible aircraft suffers from unwanted oscillatory vibrations during aircraft manoeuvres. A recently developed distributed-delay signal (DZV) shaper is therefore proposed to be applied as a feedforward controller to alleviate the manoeuvre loads, as an alternative to traditional structural filters used routinely in this context. Structural filters are essentially linear low-pass filters with bandwidth below the significant flexible modes, applied to control signals generated either by the pilot’s direct input or by the flight control system. It has been showed that if instead a properly tuned signal shaper is used, better performance can be achieved: first, the target modes are significantly attenuated while the responsiveness of the aircraft is less compromised and secondly, the oscillatory nature of the vibrations are reduced. The high fidelity simulation results on a full scaled dynamic model of a highly flexible blended wing–body (BWB) aircraft show that in comparison to traditional structural filters, signal shapers significantly reduce the wing root loading (forces and moments) which provides potential structural benefits.

Homelessness in the UK: who is most at risk?

Is the common pressure group and media refrain that ‘we are all two pay cheques away from homelessness’ justified by the evidence? Drawing on multivariate analysis of two cross-sectional datasets (the ‘Scottish Household Survey’ and the UK-wide ‘Poverty and Social Exclusion’) Survey and one longitudinal data-set (the ‘British Cohort Study 1970’), this paper provides a systematic account of the social distribution of homelessness in the UK. Informed by a critical realist explanatory framework, our analysis underlines the centrality of poverty, especially childhood poverty, to the generation of homelessness, while also demonstrating the impact of broader labour and housing market contexts, and certain demographic, personal and social support characteristics. These findings reinforce the moral imperative for policy action on homelessness, while at the same time signalling opportunities to target preventative interventions on high risk groups.     

国外城市贫困问题研究

当前我国的城市贫困问题日益突出，但城市地理学者对这一社会问题的研究很少，且研究深度不够。旨在从城市贫困的含义和界定、城市贫困的特征、城市贫困产生的背景、产生原因及其应对措施等方面，对国城市贫困问题的研究做系统综述，较全面的介绍国外城市贫困问题的研究概况，以引起我国城市地理学者对这一问题的关注。     

Keeping Warm and Staying Well. Does Home Energy Efficiency Mediate the Relationship between Socio-economic Status and the Risk of Poorer Health?

This paper discusses the findings of two surveys, undertaken in 2000 and 2001, which investigated relationships between home energy efficiency, socio-economic status and respondent health. Data were collected through interviews with an informant from each household and energy surveys. Respondents were drawn from relatively poor households. The main health measure used in the analysis, respondent-assessed overall health, was statistically significantly related to other health indicators, including SF36 scores, the reported presence of limiting conditions and health care behaviours such as visiting the GP. Worse respondent self-assessed health was statistically significantly related to occupational, wealth and income measures of poorer socio-economic status. However, measures of heating satisfaction and sense of mastery displaced the socio-economic measures when they were included in the predictive logistic regression model for self-assessed respondent health. Objective home energy efficiency, measured by SAP ratings, was associated with health in the model independently of the subjective measure. The findings support other evidence that home energy efficiency makes an important contribution to the relationship between lower socio-economic status and poorer health, and document the combined relationship between objective and subjectively measured home energy efficiency and health.

新疆乌恰地区地处塔里木盆地与西南天山和昆仑山的交汇处，经历了从中元古代到第四纪较为完整的地层沉积作用，印支期、燕山期和喜山期等强烈的碰撞造山作用及长期的风蚀作用。该区在上述地质作用的共同作用下形成了多种奇特的地形地貌和构造奇观，同时该区特殊的地理气候条件也造就了多种天然经济作物与多种野生动物和谐共存的生态环境。笔者建议当地以地质公园建设为先导，改善基础道路条件，兴建河道水利设施，扩大黑枸杞、甘草、锁阳、沙棘等经济作物种植面积，通过水土保护进一步提高和改善当地生态环境，通过创建“高山有机羊肉”品牌，带动当地畜牧业从数量向高质量发展，逐步形成地质公园旅游与经济作物和畜牧业一体化发展，进而实现该地区的精准脱贫。     

生态卫生与生态城市发展

今天的城市需要我们关注5个方面的全球性问题:城市卫生设施(厕所)匮乏、固体废弃物得不到妥善的处理和再利用、8亿人处于失业或半失业状态、有几百万的人在不安全的条件下依靠拣垃圾为生、用于农业生产的肥料短缺。卫生的生态城市概念需要处理上述问题,需要运用系统方法组织解决方案,致力于为所有居民,特别是为城市和乡村的贫困人口提供更好的生活环境,帮助他们减轻贫困状况。
