Twenty diabetic patients with neuropathy underwent clinical and neurophysiological evaluation together with a detailed morphometric assessment of capillary pathology in endoneurial and epineurial microvascular beds of the sural nerve. Morphological data were compared with ten non-diabetic control subjects. There were no significant differences in control subjects between basement membrane area, endothelial cell area, endothelial cell profile number or luminal area of endoneurial when compared with epineurial capillaries. In contrast, when compared with epineurial capillaries, endoneurial capillaries from diabetic patients demonstrated a significant increase in basement membrane (p < 0.001) and endothelial cell (p < 0.001) area and a significant reduction in luminal area (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in endothelial cell profile number between endoneurial and epineurial capillaries amongst diabetic patients. Previous studies have demonstrated a good correlation between the degree of microangiopathy and measures of neuropathic severity. In the present study increased endoneurial capillary basement membrane area was significantly related to reduced peroneal nerve conduction velocity (p < 0.001), myelinated fibre density (p < 0.001) and elevated vibration (p < 0.05) and thermal (p < 0.001) perception. Increased endothelial cell area and reduced luminal size were related to a reduced peroneal nerve conduction (p < 0.05, p < 0.01, respectively), reduced myelinated fibre density (p < 0.05, p < 0.01) and elevated thermal perception (p < 0.05, p < 0.001). Reducing environmental impacts and obtaining economic benefits based on utilisation of waste materials are drivers for the implementation of cleaner production policies and technologies in food processing industries. Starch is a very versatile material with a wide range of applications in the food, pharmaceutical, textile, paper, cosmetic and construction industries. In Ethiopia, starch is widely used in the textile industry. To meet the starch demand, the country imports approximately 45% of the starch used in the country. Consequently, it is imperative to find additional sources of starch that could substitute for the amount of starch that is currently being imported. Mango seeds, a waste material that is disposed of after consumption of mangos, were studied for potential use as an alternative resource for starch production. The results showed that starch extraction from mango seeds was facile and a good quality product was obtained. The present study is concerned with a techno-economic analysis for industrial production of starch from mango seeds. The study shows that extraction of starch from waste mango seeds is feasible: the project is financially viable with an accounting rate of return of 83% and a break-even analysis of 78% with a payback period of 2 years.  相似文献

The resistance to surface and subsurface damage during lubricated rolling-sliding wear of a carburised low-alloy sintered steel and the effect of shot peening were investigated. The formation of both contact fatigue cracks and of brittle tensile cracks may be predicted by a theoretical model that was experimentally validated. Carburising is effective in increasing the resistance to contact fatigue, but pores in a hard and brittle matrix may act as pre-existing cracks. Shot peening increases the contact fatigue resistance since compressive residual stresses oppose the nucleation of surface cracks.  相似文献

We report on a novel strategy to the functionalisation of electrode surfaces based on the preparation and patterning of mixed metal electrodes using metal selective electrodesorption of a sacrificial alkanethiol. Plain palladium (Pd) and plain polycrystalline gold (poly-Au) electrodes were used initially to determine metal specific potential windows within which electrodesorption of the short alkanethiol mercaptoethanol could be achieved. We found that stripping of mercaptoethanol from gold was achieved at potentials lower than −0.800 V, whilst stripping from palladium was achieved at more positive potentials i.e. around −0.650 V. Mixed metal electrodes were prepared by electroplating for short period of times palladium onto poly-Au electrodes. The resulting surfaces were characterised electrochemically in 1 M H2SO4 and clearly exhibited reduction peaks for both gold and palladium oxide formation. The mixed metal electrodes were coated with mercaptoethanol, which was further selectively removed from Pd by cyclic voltammetry in NaOH in the Pd-specific potential window. The presence of bare Pd domains revealed following electrodesorption was confirmed by subsequently adsorbing the electroactive alkanethiol 6-ferrocenylhexanethiol onto the freshly revealed Pd. Cyclic voltamogramms exhibited sharp redox peaks that could only be attributed to the successful immobilisation of 6-ferrocenylhexanethiol onto fresh Pd domains. Control surfaces, i.e. MCE fully coated Pd/Poly-Au electrode, exposed to 6-ferrocenylhexanethiol did not exhibit significant voltammetric features, attesting to the efficient patterning of the mixed metal electrode by employing metal specific reductive desorption of short alkanethiols. The possibility to pattern electrode surfaces in such way will find application in the field of diagnostics, and also in heterogeneous catalysis where Pd-Au alloys have received an increased interest in the recent years.  相似文献

This study aimed to investigate the genes PPARGC1A (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma-coactivator 1A) and CAPNS1 (calpain small subunit 1) as candidate genes affecting meat quality traits in pigs. Four polymorphisms were identified in PPARCG1A and three in CAPNS1. The PPARGC1A polymorphism c.1288T>A was associated with pH and cooking loss in a F2 Duroc×Pietrain experimental cross (DuPi, n=313) and with pH values in Italian Large White (ILW, n=380) and Italian Landrace (ILA, n=158) populations (P<0.05). The CAPNS1 polymorphism c.429A>C was associated with pH and conductivity in DuPi and with meat color in ILA (P<0.05). PPARGC1A mRNA expression associated with drip loss (P<0.01) and the same tendency was found for CAPNS1 (P=0.06). The promoter methylation profiling suggested that methylation is not involved in CAPNS1 expression regulation. In conclusion, porcine PPARGC1A and CAPNS1 genes may affect meat quality traits, with breed-specific differences, and they could be used as markers for the improvement of meat quality in pigs.  相似文献

In the original paper by Tesfaye and Tomizuka (ibid., vol.40, p.743-7, 1995), an asymptotic analysis was used to address the zero structure of discretized continuous-time systems expressed in the Euler (or forward difference) operator. The method was developed for application to multivariable control systems. The authors state that the analysis is flawed, so that a theorem is true as stated only when the continuous time relative degree is equal to two. They indicate how the analysis may be rectified. Morphometric techniques were employed to assess perineurial capillary abnormalities in the sural nerve of 20 diabetic patients with neuropathy and 10 normal control subjects. Structural abnormalities were related to quantitative neurophysiological and neuropathological measures of neuropathy. Perineurial capillary endothelial cell area (P < 0.001) and endothelial cell profile number (P < 0.01) were increased and luminal area (P < 0.001) was reduced in diabetic patients when compared with control subjects. A significant relationship was observed between endothelial cell hyperplasia and measures of neuropathic severity. These findings provide evidence for perineurial capillary luminal occlusion due primarily to both endothelial cell hypertrophy and hyperplasia. Such a reduction in luminal size is expected to reduce transperineurial and hence endoneurial blood flow, resulting in endoneurial hypoxia and hence human diabetic neuropathy.  相似文献

Triangulation of the Ag-Hg-Se-I system in the vicinity of quaternary phase Ag4HgSe2I2 was performed by differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and electromotive force (EMF) methods. The spatial position of the phase region Ag4HgSe2I2-Se-HgI2 regarding the figurative point of silver was used to write the chemical reaction of formation of Ag4HgSe2I2. The EMF measurements were carried out by applying an electrochemical cell: (–) C|Ag|Ag2GeS3 glass|Ag4HgSe2I2, HgI2, Se|C (+), where C is graphite and Ag2GeS3 glass is the fast purely Ag+ ions conducting electrolyte. The linear dependence of the EMF of the electrochemical cell on temperature was used to determine the standard thermodynamic values of Ag4HgSe2I2 for the first time.  相似文献
