Teaching mental patients to use client-centered and experiential therapeutic skills with each other.

Investigated the effects of teaching 42 acute and chronic schizophrenic inpatients (mean age 27.6 yrs) to use client-centered reflective and experiential focusing skills with each other. To determine whether these skills could be learned, Ss were pre- and posttested with the Hinterkopf-Brunswick Talker and Helper Rating Scales. Results indicate that Ss were successful in learning the majority of skills taught. Administration of the Discharge Readiness Inventory revealed significant improvement in experimental Ss as compared to controls on community adjustment potential. Zur Kenntnis der Milchphosphatasen

Zusammenfassung Mit Hilfe eines Laborerhitzers, der eine weitgehende Variation von Erhitzungszeit und Erhitzungstemperatur erlaubt, wurde die Hitzeinaktivierung der sauren Phosphatase in dem Temperaturbereich von 60–95° C verfolgt. Dabei wurde festgestellt, daß das Enzym in dem untersuchten Temperaturbereich auch durch Erhitzungszeiten von 100 sec nicht völlig inaktiviert, aber bereits von Erhitzungs-temperaturen von über 60° C angegriffen wird. Die Kinetik der Hitzeinaktivierung war nicht einheitlich und es wurde versucht, die Unregelmäßigkeiten zu erklären. Eine geradlinige Beziehung zwischen Erhitzungstemperatur und dem Logarithmus der Heißhaltezeit konnte unter den gegebenen Zeit- und Temperaturbedingungen nur innerhalb einer 30–70%igen Inaktivierung gefunden werden. Bei einer geringeren Inaktivierung als 30% entsprach der Inaktivierungsgrad des Enzyms nicht der zugeführten Wärmemenge, während für einen höheren Inaktivierungsgrad schärfere Erhitzungsbedingungen als die verwendete Erhitzungsapparatur zuließ, notwendig sind.     

Immunoradionuclide localization of human neuroblastoma xenografted in nude mice using anti-GD2 labelled with I125

Neuroblastoma is the most frequent tumour of the childhood under the age of 5. The staging and the follow up are achieved by MIBG scintigraphy, considered as the method of reference, but sometimes difficult to interpret . The availability of monoclonal antibodies against the ganglioside GD2, expressed on the cell membrane of neuroblastoma and neuro-endocrine cancers offers novel tools that deserve to be carefully explored. We investigated four mouse monoclonal antibodies (3 IgG3: BW704, 7A4, 60C3, and the IgG1 variant of BW704: MAK704), on nude mice xenografted with a human neuroblastoma (REM). Sixty one nude mice were included. The three former MAbs provided tumour imaging, the best results being obtained with BW704, followed by 7A4 and 60C3. MAK704 was disappointing. A control antiphosphorylcholine antibody (P51-1) did not give any tumour image in the three tested mice. Scintigraphy ratios tumour/liver and tumour/muscle reached 20 and 100 with BW704, respectively, on the 10th day. Good imaging quality was already obtained from the 24th h. The tumour uptake, calculated from radioactivity countings of resected samples, reached 22 +/- 3% of injected dose per gramme. These results let us hope that these antibodies could also provide highly contrasted images in humans and could open the way for therapeutic applications.     

Analysis of aged CD-R: From optical HF signal defects to digital errors

This article focuses on the CD-R defects that cause digital errors when decoding the HF signal delivered by the optical pickup of a player. We often remark that the error rate is not correlated with any of the parameters currently used to qualify the HF signal. We develop a more precise analysis of the HF signal than those of the analysers, in order to explain how errors happen in this case. The information is obtained mainly from the complete histogram of the positions of the transitions. We also check particular signal segments such as the beginnings of data frames. Using these analysis tools, we highlight different kinds of defects on aged CD-R. One of them consists in micrometre-sized dark spots, which are localized on the dye layer. More generally, the defects due to ageing cannot be characterised only by the standard parameters given by analysers.     

Variations in Worker Cuticular Hydrocarbons and Soldier Isoprenoid Defensive Secretions Within and Among Introduced and Native Populations of the Subterranean Termite, Reticulitermes flavipes

In social insects, cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) play a central role in nestmate recognition. CHCs have proved to be useful for identifying species and differentiating populations. In combination with CHCs, isoprenoid soldier defensive secretions (SDSs) have been previously used in some termite species for chemotaxonomic analyses. This study compared the levels of chemical variation within and among introduced (French) and native (U.S.) populations of the subterranean termite, Reticulitermes flavipes. Worker CHCs and soldier SDSs from termites collected from colonies in nine populations in Florida, Louisiana, and France were analyzed. Discriminant analyses revealed that both localities and populations can be distinguished by using the variation in CHC profiles. Principal component analyses of CHC profiles as well as the calculation of two distance parameters (Nei and Euclidean) revealed remarkable chemical homogeneity within and among French populations. These analyses also showed that the CHC profiles of French populations were closer to termite populations from Louisiana than to those from Florida. Of the six distinct SDS chemotypes, one was common to populations in France and Louisiana. The possibility that populations in France originated from Louisiana, and the potential causes and consequences of chemical homogeneity within introduced populations are discussed.
