The hemostatic system function of patients with severe forms of diphtheria

Hemostasis of 100 patients with severe diphtheria infection was studied throughout the disease. The patients were found to have marked procoagulant, anticoagulant and fibrinolytic disorders. Antithrombogenic activity of the vascular wall was also abnormal. The above impairments correlated with the symptoms severity and are interpreted as DIC syndrome which ran subclinically or as hemorrhagic syndrome. The majority of the patients underwent a hyperhypocoagulant phase of DIC syndrome.     

The significance of gastric helicobacteriosis in the genesis hemorrhage from duodenal peptic ulcer

Based on a comprehensive analysis of findings from examination and surgical treatment of 196 patients with bleeding pyloroduodenal ulcers, it was found out that patients with concurrent helicobacteriosis of the stomach are prone to more unfavourable course of their illness, which fact is evidenced by a greater loss of blood and higher risk for bleeding recurrences. A classification is proposed by the authors, taking advantage of the data from endoscopic, microscopic and immunoenzymatic techniques, with the purpose of providing an assessment of degree of severity of helicobacteriosis of the stomach.     

Changes in the respiratory system of patients with rheumatoid arthritis--personal observations

13 patients with RA admitted to our Institute with symptoms of respiratory involvement were described. Taking under consideration pulmonary function tests, radiological findings and histological examinations, we recognised 7 cases with interstitial lung disease, 3 cases with recurrent respiratory infection with bronchiectasis, 1 case with pleuritis, 1 with Caplan's syndrome and 1 with alveolar haemorrhage. The role of RF, and treatment with gold in the development of interstitial lung disease, as well as character of physiologic abnormalities concerning the small airways and its potential connection with bronchiolitis were discussed.     

Clustering high dimensional data: A graph-based relaxed optimization approach

There is no doubt that clustering is one of the most studied data mining tasks. Nevertheless, it remains a challenging problem to solve despite the many proposed clustering approaches. Graph-based approaches solve the clustering task as a global optimization problem, while many other works are based on local methods. In this paper, we propose a novel graph-based algorithm “GBR” that relaxes some well-defined method even as improving the accuracy whilst keeping it simple. The primary motivation of our relaxation of the objective is to allow the reformulated objective to find well distributed cluster indicators for complicated data instances. This relaxation results in an analytical solution that avoids the approximated iterative methods that have been adopted in many other graph-based approaches. The experiments on synthetic and real data sets show that our relaxation accomplishes excellent clustering results. Our key contributions are: (1) we provide an analytical solution to solve the global clustering task as opposed to approximated iterative approaches; (2) a very simple implementation using existing optimization packages; (3) an algorithm with relatively less computation time over the number of data instances to cluster than other well defined methods in the literature.     

Magnetic Ordering of Dy3+ Ions in RbDy(WO4)2 Single Crystal

The specific heat C(T) of the monoclinic RbDy(WO ₄ ) ₂ crystal has been studied at very low temperatures 0.2T1.9 K and in magnetic fields 0H0.38 T. The Neel temperature was shown to be equal to T_N = 0.818 ± 0.005 K. The experimental value of the effective exchange parameter was obtained to be equal to J/k = – 0.798 K. The C T) dependence below Neel temperature 0.5T_N0.99T_N ) is well described by 2D Ising model, whereas in the temperature region close above T_N (1.01 T_N2T_N) it can be described by neither 2D, nor 3D Ising model. The experimental and theoretical H-T_N diagrams for field H a are in a reasonable agreement for simple quadratic lattice.     

Effect of moditen-depot therapy on the duration and quality of remissions in schizophrenia patients

The authors studied the effectiveness of out-patient treatment by Moditen-Deppt of 128 schizophrenic patients. A comparison of the previous remissions appearing during usual pharmacotherapy and remissions seen during Moditen-Depot treatment depicted statistically significant differences, indicating a distinct prevention of exacerbations due to this preparation, an increase in the duration and improved quality of remissions. Such improved remissions were expressed in lesser severity, in a decrease of psychopathological disturbances, changes qualified as a "mollification of a defect" and an improvement of some socio-clinical indices.     

Effect of Multi-Wall Carbon Nanotubes on the Mechanical Properties of Natural Rubber

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were used to prepare natural rubber (NR) nanocomposites. Our first efforts to achieve nanostructures in MWNTs/NR nanocomposites were formed by incorporating carbon nanotubes in a polymer solution and subsequently evaporating the solvent. Using this technique, nanotubes can be dispersed homogeneously in the NR matrix in an attempt to increase the mechanical properties of these nanocomposites. The properties of the nanocomposites such as tensile strength, tensile modulus, elongation at break and hardness were studied. Mechanical test results show an increase in the initial modulus for up to 12 times in relation to pure NR. In addition to mechanical testing, the dispersion state of the MWNTs into NR studied by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) in order to understand the morphology of the resulting system     

Cold Modelling of Slag Splashing in LD Furnace by Oxygen Lance with Twisted Nozzle Tip

The effects of a conventional lance tip with 4 normal nozzles and a lance tip with 4 twisted nozzles on slag splashing were investigated. A cold model for LD converters, Jiuquan Iron & Steel Co., was established and the amount of slag splashed onto the model walls was measured in the cold modelling experiments. The results from the experiments show that at low top gas flow rate the amount of slag splashing for the tip with twisted nozzles is less than that for the conventional tip, whereas at high top gas flow rate the amount of slag splashing for the nozzle twisted lance is greater than that for the conventional lance. For the nozzle twisted lance tip, slag splashing rates increase with increase in slag amount, lance height and top gas flow rate and the maximum amount of slag splashing for the tip with twisted nozzles can be obtained under the process parameters of 47.6 Nm³/h gas flow rate, 12% slag amount and 247 mm lance height. More slag droplets can be directed onto the cone with a nozzle twisted lance tip than with a normal lance tip at high top gas flow rate.     

Studies on pore blocking mechanism and technical feasibility of a hybrid PAC-MF process for reclamation of irrigation water from biotreated POME

An integrated low-cost adsorption (with powdered activated carbon, PAC) and cross-flow membrane filtration (with microfiltration membranes of 0.1 and 0.2 μm pore sizes) process was employed for the treatment of biotreated palm oil mill effluent (POME) to produce irrigation water that is fully benchmarked with water-quality standards. The permeate quality was within the recommended standard for irrigation water, as the concentrations of all critical constituents were well below their recommended values. Sustainability of the process integration was further confirmed with the domination of cake filtration over other blocking mechanisms with higher R² values at all trans-membrane pressures. Suitable extended usage of permeate was found for toilet/urinal flushing.
