Evaluation of Soybean Seedcoat Cracking During Drying:PART II. Using MRI

MRI techniques were developed and employed for non-destructive and noninvasive study of seedcoat cracking in low moisture soybean kernels during heated air drying. Proton density image and transient moisture distribution profile of a single soybean kernel can be obtained using MRI. These MRI techniques proved to be particularly useful for the continuous observation of initiation and propagation of seedcoat cracking during the entire period of drying process without interruption.

The proton density images of soybean kernels showed that seedcoat cracking was initiated perpendicular to the long axis of the kernel near the hilum. The transient moisture distribution profiles in soybean kernels during drying indicate that moisture gradient developed during drying was higher in the seedcoat than in the cotyledon. ANALYSIS OF RECENT MEASUREMENTS OF THE VISCOSITY OF GLASSES

Viscosity of Simple Soda-Silicate 500° to 1400°C Comparison of the results given by English with those of Washburn, Shelton and Libman, indicates a discrepancy in the absolute values of log₁₀ viscosity amounting to 0.6, those of Washburn et al., being relatively too high. If correction for this is made, the isothermal curves of log₁₀ viscosity as a function of soda content are smooth up to 50% Na₂O, showing no inflection. The observations as a function of temperature T are all represented within accidental error by an equation of the type where all three constants vary regularly with the composition. Change of Viscosity of Glass (6SiO₂, 2Na₂O) due to Molecular Substitution of CaO, MgO and Al₂O₃ for Na₂O The effect is clearly brought out by plotting (from the results of English) the change of log₁₀η due to the substitution as a function of temperature. The curves each show a sharp bend at a temperature between 840° and 1050°C, which is designated the aggregation temperature T_a. If we divide these curves by the corresponding percentage substituted, we get curves for each oxide which are straight and parallel below the aggregation temperatures, the slopes (increase of change of log₁₀η per 100°C) being −0.056 (CaO), −0.055 (MgO), −0.018 (A1₂O₃) per per cent oxide substituted. For substitution of 1/2 molecule the slopes are −0.325 (CaO), −0.23 (MgO) and −0.18 (Al₂O₃) per 100°. At the aggregation temperature the change of log₁₀η per per cent is a minimum, 0.03 to 0.06 for CaO, 0.12 for MgO, 0.07 for Al₂O₃. Evidence of Aggregation in Glasses, from viscosity Measurements The sharp bends in the plots of change of log₁₀η due to substitution of an oxide for Na₂O, suggest the beginning of molecular aggregation at these temperatures. These aggregation temperatures are close to the devitrification temperatures, but the effect on the viscosity curves cannot be due to actual devitrification since it does not change with time. Taking the aggregation temperatures as equal to devitrification temperatures, additional isotherms are roughly sketched into the equilibrium triangle of the system Na₂O-CaO-SiO₂. Change of Viscosity of Glass (4SiO₂, 2Na₂O) due to of Substitution of B₂O₃ for SiO₂ The change of log₁₀η (from the results of English) is plotted as a function of temperature, and also the change of log₁₀η per per cent B₂O₃. The curves are more complex than for the substitution for Na₂O.     

BubbleNet: A Cyber Security Dashboard for Visualizing Patterns

The field of cyber security is faced with ever‐expanding amounts of data and a constant barrage of cyber attacks. Within this space, we have designed BubbleNet as a cyber security dashboard to help network analysts identify and summarize patterns within the data. This design study faced a range of interesting constraints from limited time with various expert users and working with users beyond the network analyst, such as network managers. To overcome these constraints, the design study employed a user‐centered design process and a variety of methods to incorporate user feedback throughout the design of BubbleNet. This approach resulted in a successfully evaluated dashboard with users and further deployments of these ideas in both research and operational environments. By explaining these methods and the process, it can benefit future visualization designers to help overcome similar challenges in cyber security or alternative domains.     

The effect of transdermal nicotine on digital perfusion in reformed habitual smokers

The effects of transdermal nicotine-assisted smoking cessation on digital perfusion and health-related quality of life were assessed in 10 chronic smokers. Components of digital blood flow were evaluated by digital temperature and laser Doppler fluxmetry before, during, and after a standardized cold challenge. Nutritional flow was measured by vital capillaroscopy; a quantitative perfusion profile was obtained by laser Doppler perfusion imaging. A battery of validated measures were used to evaluate health-related quality of life. The microvascular response of smokers was evaluated before smoking cessation and at 2 and 7 days after smoking cessation and was compared with the response of nonsmoking controls. Results demonstrated that a (1) cutaneous microvascular perfusion was lower in smokers than nonsmokers, (2) the acute administration of transdermal nicotine did not decrease cutaneous perfusion, (3) smoking cessation and transdermal nicotine normalized digital microvascular perfusion by 7 days, and (4) transdermal nicotine and smoking cessation did not negatively impact health-related quality of life.     

Interfacing transputer links to external devices

Two approaches to interfacing transputers to external circuitry are considered. The design and construction of both a serial and a parallel interface for transputers is described. These enable transputers to communicate with peripherals via the standard Inmos transputer links. A Motorola MC68701 8-bit microcomputer, serving as a programmable I/O controller, is incorporated into both interfaces. This solution lends a high degree of flexibility into the interface design, and can be used with any transputer board which has spare links available at edge connectors. Finally, two control applications are briefly described which utilize the interfaces.     

Variation in Minnesota HRS Wheats: Bran Content

ABSTRACT: Bran content in both wheat-meal and flour was measured using an automated fluorescence microscopic imaging instrument, and correlated with milling extraction, ash content, and test weight values. Quantitative image analysis of the kernel bran content revealed differences in the linear response and slope, when plotted against test weight for common Minnesota HRS wheat varieties or a correlation coefficient of-0.818 for all HRS wheat samples (sample number = 65, p = 0.01). Whole-wheat bran and ash values also correlated significantly (p = 0.01) with the percent milling extraction (-0.927 and -0.687, respectively). The flour bran content was not significantly correlated with flour ash content (0.202).     

The role of operative arthroscopy for the diagnosis and treatment of lesions about the distal ulna

Operative arthroscopy of the wrist compliments the physical examination and radiographic imaging to improve diagnosis and treatment of lesions about the distal ulna. This article reviews the relevant anatomy, biomechanics, and classification of acute and degenerative lesions of the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC). Minimally invasive diagnostic and management techniques for TFCC tears are described in detail.     

The employment of recent doctorate recipients in psychology: 1975 through 1978.

Describes results of the American Psychological Association's 1st 4 annual Doctorate Employment Surveys from 1975 to 1978. The surveys, conducted in the winter following receipt of degrees, found a low rate of unemployment: The percentage of doctorate recipients who were unemployed and seeking employment was 3.0% in 1975 and 2.0% or lower in subsequent years. Approximately half of those unemployed at the time of the survey had been employed in psychology-related work at a professional level before receiving their doctorates. Among those employed full-time, the percentage employed in academic settings declined, and the percentages employed in human service settings and business, government, and other settings increased. Despite the decline in academic employment, 97.1% reported that their jobs were related to psychology, and 89.0% reported that their jobs were commensurate with their training. Effect of pre-dehulling treatments on some nutritional and physical properties of navy and pinto beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

The effect of pre-dehulling treatments using low and high temperatures on some nutritional and physical properties of navy and pinto beans was investigated. Beans were exposed to water (14%, 28% and soaking 1:5, w/v for 6 h, 16 and 16 h, respectively) to facilitate seed coat detachment prior to freeze drying (FD) for 48 h or heat drying (HT) for 20 or 60 min. Exposure to the highest moisture levels produced the largest seed coat yields (17.38-20.91%) and was independent of the drying conditions. The total phenolic content was positively correlated to the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) antioxidant activity and increased as the exposure time to HT increased, but it was unaffected by the FD. The nutritional properties of the bean varieties differed significantly, phytic acid was unaffected, and the highest antioxidant activity was observed on the seed coats of HT pinto beans (69.24-84.46% of DPPH discoloration). Significant physical changes were observed for the HT seeds, with the highest yellowness and the lowest peak viscosity detected in the soaked and HT (60 min) beans.     

Medulloepithelioma of the optic nerve head

Medulloepithelioma of the optic nerve is a rare developmental tumor. We describe a 2-year-old boy with profound loss of vision associated with a visible tumor of the optic nerve head in his left eye. A clinically diagnosed retinoblastoma necessitated left eye enucleation. The histopathological diagnosis was malignant medulloepithelioma that was incompletely resected. Further tumor resection was required, and the patient received adjunctive chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Four years after treatment, the patient has neither clinical nor radiological evidence of tumor.
