In this study, biodiesel was produced from Moringa oleifera oil using sulfated tin oxide enhanced with SiO2 (SO42/SnO2-SiO2) as super acid solid catalyst. The experimental design was done using design of experiment (DoE), specifically, response surface methodology based on three-variable central composite design (CCD) with alpha (α) = 2. The reaction parameters studied were reaction temperature (60 °C to 180 °C), reaction period (1 h to 3 h) and methanol to oil ratio (1:6 to 1:24). It was observed that the yield up to 84 wt.% of Moringa oleifera methyl esters can be obtained with reaction conditions of 150 °C temperature, 150 min reaction time and 1:19.5 methanol to oil ratio, while catalyst concentration and agitation speed are kept at 3 wt.% and 350-360 rpm respectively. Therefore this study presents the possibility of converting a relatively new oil feedstock, Moringa oleifera oil to biodiesel and thus reducing the world's dependency on existing edible oil as biodiesel feedstock.  相似文献

Fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) prepared by transesterification process using a heterogeneous catalyst has received a lot of interest lately as it could overcome the limitations of the current commercial homogeneous catalytic process. Apart from that, palm oil, being the cheapest edible oil in the world, will always remain the most economical source of FAME. Therefore, in this study, the use of sulfated zirconia alumina as a heterogeneous catalyst to catalyze the transesterification of palm oil with methanol to FAME was carried out using design of experiment (DOE), specifically response surface methodology (RSM) based on four-variable central composite design (CCD) with α = 2. The transesterification process variables are reaction temperature (60–180°C), reaction period (1–5 h), methanol-to-oil ratio (4–12 mol mol?1), and amount of catalyst (2–10 wt.%). In this study involving many multiple process variables, the design of experiment approach was found to be superior to the conventional one-variable-at-one-time approach. Interactions between variables were found to have significant effect on the yield of FAME. At the conditions of 3 h of reaction period, 127°C reaction temperature, methanol-to-palm oil ratio of 8, and 6 wt.% of catalyst, an optimum FAME yield of 83.3% can be obtained, indicating that sulfated zirconia alumina has potential as a heterogeneous catalyst for the production of FAME from palm oil.  相似文献

Initial synchronization (i.e. acquisition) of the spreading wave-form is a significant problem in spread spectrum system design. In this paper, adaptive threshold techniques are employed in a serial search acquisition scheme for direct sequence (DS) spread spectrum signals to improve the mean acquisition time of the system. Two approaches for adpative threshold modelling are presented, analysed and compared, namely the sample test approach and the probability-of-error approach. The results show that, using an adaptive threshold, a significant improvement may be achieved in the mean acquisition time for a certain range of interference-to-signal ratios (ISRS). The type of interference assumed is narrowband interference, from which DS spread spectrum systems suffer most, in addition to additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Search strategies for initial synchronization of direct sequence (DS) spread spectrum communication systems are compared, modelled and implemented using MATLAB then tested in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and narrowband interference. The performance of these search strategies, namely, offset‐z‐search strategies and expanding alternate search strategies, in terms of the mean value of the search length is evaluated for different probabilities of detection. A truncated Gaussian probability phase distribution is assumed (as a priori information about the correct phase) and the performance of these search strategies is tested for different standard deviations (σ) of the phase. A novel search strategy, namely the offset‐z3, based on the offset z‐search strategy is introduced. Among all search strategies investigated the non‐uniform expanding alternate (NUEA) search strategy is found to perform best at high probability of detection. However, for a more peaked phase distribution, the offset‐z3‐search strategy is shown to offer better performance at low probability of detection. This paper explores the feasibility of converting Cerbera odollam (sea mango) oil into biodiesel. The first part of this study focused on the extraction of oil from the seeds of C. odollam fruits, whereas the second part focused on the transesterification of the extracted oil to fatty acid methyl esters (FAME). The transesterification reactions were carried out using three different catalysts; sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as a homogenous catalyst, sulfated zirconia alumina and montmorillonite KSF as heterogeneous catalysts. The seeds were found to contain high percentage of oil up to 54% while the yield of FAME can reach up to 83.8% using sulfated zirconia catalyst.  相似文献

The transesterification process variables were reaction temperature, x1 (50–190 °C), reaction period, x2 (60–300 min), methanol/oil ratio, x3 (4–12 mol mol?1) and amount of catalyst, x4 (1–5 wt%). It was found that the yield of palm oil fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) could reach up to 79.6% using the following reaction conditions: reaction temperature of 190 °C, reaction period at 180 min, ratio of methanol/oil at 8:1 mol mol?1 and amount of catalyst at 3%.  相似文献

The production of biodiesel has become popular recently as a result of increasing demand for a clean, safe and renewable energy. Biodiesel is made from natural renewable sources such as vegetable oils and animal fats. The conventional method of producing biodiesel is by reacting vegetable oil with alcohol in the presence of a homogenous catalyst (NaOH). However, this conventional method has some limitations such as the formation of soap, usage of significant quantities of wash water and complicated separation processes. Heterogeneous processes using solid catalysts have significant advantages over homogenous methods. Currently, more than 90 % of world biodiesel is produced using rapeseed oil. The production of biodiesel from rapeseed oil is considered uneconomical, considering the fact that palm oil is currently the world's cheapest vegetable oil. Therefore, the focus of this study is to show the feasibility of producing biodiesel from palm oil using montmorillonite KSF as a heterogeneous catalyst. The heterogeneous transesterification process was studied using design of experiment (DOE), specifically response surface methodology (RSM) based on a four‐variable central composite design (CCD) with α = 2. The transesterification process variables were reaction temperature, x1 (50–190 °C), reaction period, x2 (60–300 min), methanol/oil ratio, x3 (4–12 mol mol–1) and the amount of catalyst, x4 (1–5 wt %). It was found that the conversion of palm oil to biodiesel can reach up to 78.7 % using the following reaction conditions: reaction temperature of 155 °C, reaction period of 120 min, ratio of methanol/oil at 10:1 mol mol–1 and amount of catalyst at 4 wt %. From this study, it was shown that montmorillonite KSF catalyst can be used as a solid catalyst for biodiesel production from palm oil.  相似文献
