Preparation of SiC particles coated with alumina hydrate: Effect of reaction condition on particle coalescence

Alumina-hydrate-coated SiC particles were prepared via a homogeneous precipitation method using urea, and the conditions for uniform coating and less coalescence of the particles were investigated. Coalescence of coated particles could be said to occur by collision and agglomeration followed by deposition of alumina hydrate on the agglomerated particles. Coalescence of coated particles was suppressed by use of low reaction temperature, low concentration of aluminium sulfate, high concentration of urea, intensive stirring, and a flow reactor.     

Evaluation of advanced fuzzy logic PSS on analog network simulatorand actual installation on hydro generators

This paper presents the experimental evaluation of an advanced fuzzy logic PSS on the analog network simulator at the Research Laboratory of Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc. The proposed power system stabilizer (PSS) is set up by using a personal computer with A/D and D/A conversion interfaces. The personal computer based PSS was set on the analog network simulator to evaluate the effectiveness of the advanced fuzzy logic control scheme, and to provide sufficient data for the actual installation of the proposed PSS on hydro-units in the Kyushu Electric Power System. This paper also describes the actual installation of the proposed PSS on hydro-units in the Kyushu Electric Power System for the long term evaluation of the proposed PSS using its prototypes     

Development of 170 GHz/500 kW gyrotron

A development of 170GHz/500kW level gyrotron was carried out as R&D work of ITER. The oscillation mode is TE_31,8. In a short pulse experiment, the maximum power of 750kW was achieved at 85kV/40A. The efficiency was 22%. In the depressed collector operation, 500kW/36%/50ms was obtained. The maximum efficiency of 40% was obtained at P_RF=470kW whereas the power decrease by the electron trapping was observed. Pulse extension was done up to 10s at P_RF=170kW with the depressed collector operation. The power was limited by the temperature increase of the output window.     

Experimental study on a quasi-optical mode converter for transforming the whispering-gallery mode into a circularly polarized hollow radiation beam

An experiment was carried out for transforming the 120 GHz-TE_12.2 whispering-gallery mode (WGM) into a circularly polarized hollow radiation beam. A hollow beam was formed by reflecting the WGM, which was radiated from a 16 mm radius circular waveguide cut, with an annular mirror having suitable local normal vectors. The experimentally observed field intensity profiles of the reflected wave were in good agreement with calculated results.     

Measurement of the thermal diffusivity of thin films on substrate by the photoacoustic method

Measurements of the thermal diffusivity of thin films on substrate have been performed by the photoacoustic method. In order to examine the method we have built a new apparatus and proposed (1) a system calibration procedure using optically and thermally thick reference samples and (2) a data analysis procedure based on the RG (Rosencwaig and Gersho) theory. As a result of using a transparent photoacoustic cell, the systematic errors which are caused by stray light have been reduced. With this apparatus, measurements have been performed on platinum, titanium, and stainless steel (SUS304) thin foils (thickness form 50 to 100 µm) with three different liquid backing materials (water, glycerol, and ethyl alcohol). The reproducibility was within ±7% regardless of film thickness and substrate materials.     

Interferon therapy after ablation of Kent bundle for a patient with chronic hepatitis type B complicated with WPW syndrome

Cardiotoxicity of interferon-alpha or gamma, such as fatal arrhythmia and myocardial infarction, has been reported. Therefore cardiotoxicity of interferon should be seriously considered before administration for patients with a pre-existing heart disease. We treated a patient with chronic active hepatitis type B, coexisted with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, who has had frequent attacks of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. To prevent the occurrence of fatal arrhythmia with an interferon therapy in this patient, we performed radiofrequency catheter ablation of the Kent bundle. After the successful ablation, we could safely administered recombinant interferon alpha-2b for chronic hepatitis type B.     

Direct growth of CdTe on (100), (211), and (111) Si by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition

CdTe epilayers were grown directly on (100), (211), and (111) silicon substrates by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The crystallinity and the growth orientation of the CdTe film were dependent on the surface treatment of the Si substrate. The surface treatment consisted of exposure of the Si surface to diethyltelluride (DETe) at temperatures over 600°C prior to CdTe growth. Direct growth of CdTe on (100) Si produced polycrystalline films whereas (lll)B single crystals grew when Si was exposed to DETe prior to CdTe growth. On (211) Si, single crystal films with (133)A orientation was obtained when grown directly; but produced films with (211)A orientation when the Si surface was exposed to DETe. On the other hand, only (lll)A CdTe films were possible on (111) Si, both with and without Te source exposure, although twinning was increased after exposure. The results indicate that the exposure to a Te-source changes the initial growth stage significantly, except for the growth on (111) Si. We propose a model in which a Te atom replaces a Si atom that is bound to two Si atoms.     

Advanced endocrine cell carcinoma of the gallbladder: a patient with 12-year survival

Gallbladder carcinoid is a rare disease. In previous reports, classical carcinoid, an entity with a good prognosis, has not been distinguished from endocrine cell carcinoma, a tumor associated with marked cell atypia and mitosis, and a poor prognosis. The patient was a 66 year old woman who presented to our hospital with a chief complaint of jaundice. Pre-operatively, she was diagnosed as having advanced gallbladder carcinoma invading the liver and the hepatic hilus. The patient underwent right hepatic trisegmentectomy with en bloc resection of the caudate lobe and extrahepatic bile ducts, extended lymph node clearance and left hepaticojejunostomy. Histopathological examination showed positive Grimelius staining, marked mitosis, and intense atypism, hence, the tumor was diagnosed as an endocrine cell carcinoma. Twelve years after surgery, the patient is healthy, without any sign of recurrence. We present this novel case of long-term survival and review the literature.     

Systematic analysis of glycosphingolipids in the human gastrointestinal tract: Enrichment of sulfatides with hydroxylated longer-chain fatty acids in the gastric and duodenal mucosa

The composition of the glycosphingolipids of the human gastrointestinal tract was studied. The major neutral glycosphingolipids were ceramide monohexosides (e.g., GalCer, GlcCer), LacCer, Gb₃Cer, Gb₄Cer and more polar ones with more than four sugars, whereas neither Gg₃Cer nor Gg₄Cer were present. The acidic glycosphingolipids consisted of sulfatides and gangliosides such as G_M3, G_M1, G_D3 and G_D1a. Also a large amount of sulfatides was found in the gastric mucosa and duodenum. The concentrations of sulfatides in the fundic mucosa, antral mucosa and duodenum amounted to 416.0, 933.8 and 682.9 nmol/g of dry weight, respectively, exceeding those in the gastric mucosa and kidney of other mammals. The major molecular species of the sulfatides were identified as I³SO₃-GalCer with hydroxylated longer-chain fatty acids based on the analyses by gas-liquid chromatography and negative ion fast-atom bombardment mass spectrometry. In contrast, gangliosides in these regions showed a tendency to be lower than sulfatides, and the molar ratios of sulfatides to gangliosides were about 2.0, whereas those in other parts were less than 0.5. A high content of sulfatides in the gastric and duodenal mucosa, where mucosa is easily insulted by acid, pepsin and bile salts, may be closely related to their roles in mucosal protection. The nomenclature used for gangliosides and other glycosphingolipids follows the system of Svennerholm (Ref. 1) and the recommendation of the IUPAC-IUB Commission (Ref. 2), respectively.
