Improvement in the DOA estimation of broadband signals usingpartially IIR beamformers

An ideal broadband beamformer requires an increased number of taps for each filter, which in turn increases the complexity of the design. It is shown that for angles near the broadside of the antenna the beamforming is more accurate compared to the angles near the endfire, and it is advantageous to use recursive filters combined with a computed number of zeros for angles near the endfire. The proposed method is used for estimating the arrival angle of the incoming signals and displays uniform accuracy for all angles     

A Novel UWB Pulse Shape Modulation System

In this paper novel modified Hermite polynomial functions for use in impulse radio (ultra-wideband) communications are proposed. With these functions pulse shapes which are orthogonal and have nearly constant pulse width regardless of the pulse order are generated. These properties hold under the effects of differentiation. An M-ary communication system is constructed using these pulse shapes. A Matlab model for generating the pulses is designed and the effect of timing jitter on the performance of the system is investigated by computer simulation.     

Facile synthesis of polyoxometalate-based composite with doped ternary NiCoFe cations as electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction

The construction of efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reactions (OER) to replace precious catalysts is a necessity to achieve economic production of hydrogen. Herein, we report an efficient tri-metallic electrocatalysts for the OER that is prepared by incorporate nickel, cobalt and iron cations on Triton X-100/phosphotungstic acid organic-inorganic composite without utilize any binders or energy consumer procedure. Considering to the synergy effect of simultaneous absorption of NiCoFe cations on composite substrate, the as-made tri-metallic catalyst exhibits excellent OER activity with a small overpotential of 210 and 330 mV at a current density of 10 and 100 mA cm^?2, respectively. Moreover, remarkable trends in electrocatalytic activity of mono-, bi- and tri-metallic electrocatalysts at low (10 mA) and high (100 mA) current density are observed. In addition, this new families of non-precious metal catalyst shows long-term durability in 1 M KOH.     

Comparison between wavelet-based and Fourier-based multicarrier UWB systems

The use of wavelet transform in multicarrier ultra wideband (UWB) systems is analysed and the results are compared with Fourier-based multicarrier UWB systems. It is well known that convolution in time domain is equivalent to multiplication in frequency domain; however, there is no closed-form expression in the literature for convolution's counterpart in the wavelet domain. A formula is derived to represent convolution's counterpart in the wavelet domain. Furthermore, the effects of choice and type of wavelet filters and different decomposition levels are investigated. Finally, a performance comparison of both techniques for IEEE 802.15.3a channel models using IEEE802.15.3a multiband-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing UWB specifications is provided.     

Performance of Wi-Max receiver in presence of DS-UWB system

The effect of UWB interference on a Wi-Max receiver has not been addressed in the literature. This effect is analysed and it is shown that for a realistic scenario a DS-UWB system interference will not have a destructive effect on the performance of a Wi-Max receiver.     

Probiotic-Induced Tolerogenic Dendritic Cells: A Novel Therapy for Inflammatory Bowel Disease?

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are immune-mediated, chronic relapsing diseases with a rising prevalence worldwide in both adult and pediatric populations. Treatment options for immune-mediated diseases, including IBDs, are traditional steroids, immunomodulators, and biologics, none of which are capable of inducing long-lasting remission in all patients. Dendritic cells (DCs) play a fundamental role in inducing tolerance and regulating T cells and their tolerogenic functions. Hence, modulation of intestinal mucosal immunity by DCs could provide a novel, additional tool for the treatment of IBD. Recent evidence indicates that probiotic bacteria might impact immunomodulation both in vitro and in vivo by regulating DCs’ maturation and producing tolerogenic DCs (tolDCs) which, in turn, might dampen inflammation. In this review, we will discuss this evidence and the mechanisms of action of probiotics and their metabolites in inducing tolDCs in IBDs and some conditions associated with them.     

A novel acoustic indoor localization system employing CDMA

Nowadays outdoor location systems have been used extensively in all fields of human life from military applications to daily life. However, these systems cannot operate in indoor applications. Hence, this paper considers a novel indoor location system that aims to locate an object within an accuracy of about 2 cm using ordinary and inexpensive off-the-shelf devices and that was designed and tested in an office room to evaluate its performance.In order to compute the distance between the transducers (speakers) and object to be localized (microphone), time-of-arrival measurements of acoustic signals consisting of Binary Phase Shift Keying modulated Gold sequences are performed. This DS-CDMA scheme assures accurate distance measurements and provides immunity to noise and interference.Two methods have been proposed for location estimation. The first method takes the average of four location estimates obtained by trilateration technique. In the second method, only a single robust position estimate is obtained using three distances while the least reliable fourth distance measurement is not taken into account.The system?s performance is evaluated at positions from two height levels using system parameters determined by preliminary experiments. The precision distributions in the work area and the precision versus accuracy plots depict the system performance. The proposed system provides location estimates of better than 2 cm accuracy with 99% precision.
