The dearth of women in technology and ICT-related fields continues to be a topic of interest for both the scientific community and decision-makers. Research on attitudes towards computers proves that women display more negative computer attitudes than men and also make less intense use of technology and computers than their male counterparts. For this reason, the main aims of this study are threefold. Firstly, to analyze the existence of gender differences in three dimensions of computer attitudes in a group of 550 secondary students in Spain (mean of age = 15 years old; SD = 1.73). Secondly, to study the moderating influence of a group of contextual variables on those gender differences in computer attitudes. And thirdly, to examine the predictive role of computer attitudes on the intention to pursue technology-related occupations. Some of the analyses of variance carried out show more positive computer attitudes in boys than in girls. These differences are more salient among students coming from rural areas and the upper social class, who are also enrolled in the domain of technology in secondary education, and whose mothers have no occupation outside the home. Finally, simple logistic regressions were carried out in order to prove that all dimensions of computer attitudes predict the enrollment intentions to pursue technology-related occupations. Nonetheless, gender only moderates the relationship between the cognitive dimension of computer attitudes and the enrollment intentions to pursue technology-related occupations.  相似文献

This paper addresses one of the controversial issues in the current comparative studies of the environmental and health impacts of energy systems, i.e. the treatment of severe accidents. The work covers technical aspects of severe accidents and thus primarily reflects an engineering perspective on the energy-related risk issues, though some social implications are also touched upon. The assessment concerns fossil energy sources (coal, oil and gas), nuclear power and hydro power. The scope is not limited to the power production (conversion) step of these energy chains but, whenever applicable, also includes exploration, extraction, transports, processing, storage and waste disposal. With the exception of the nuclear chain the focus of the work has been on the evaluation of the historical experience of accidents. The basis used for this evaluation is a comprehensive database ENSAD (Energy-related Severe Accident Database), established by the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI). For hypothetical nuclear accidents the probabilistic technique has also been employed and extended to cover the assessment of economic consequences of such accidents. The broader picture obtained by coverage of full energy chains leads on the world-wide basis to aggregated immediate fatality rates being much higher for the fossil chains than what one would expect if only power plants were considered. Generally, the immediate fatality rates are for all considered energy carriers significantly higher for the non-OECD countries than for OECD countries. In the case of hydro and nuclear the difference is in fact dramatic. The presentation of results is not limited to the aggregated values specific for each energy chain. Also frequency-consequence curves are provided. They reflect implicitly the ranking based on the aggregated values but include also such information as the observed or predicted chain-specific maximum extents of damages. This perspective on severe accidents may lead to different system rankings, depending on the individual risk aversion.  相似文献

The accuracy of Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) level 3 1 km land surface temperature (LST) products was assessed through long-term validation carried out in a mountainous site in Sierra Nevada, southeast Spain. A total of 1458 day and night thermal images, acquired by Terra and Aqua satellites during 2008, were processed and compared to ground-truth data recorded at the meteorological station of Robledal de Cañar with a frequency of one measurement every 10 min. The purpose of this investigation was to understand whether MODIS LST data can be used as input for climate models to be constructed for mountainous environments. Several trends in the MODIS LST data were observed, including the underestimation of daytime values and the overestimation of night-time values. Although all the data sets (Terra and Aqua, diurnal and nocturnal) showed high correlation coefficients with ground measurements, only night values maintained a relatively high accuracy of approximately 2°C of annual average error. Factors that may cause errors in the MODIS LST data, like acquisition angle, cloud, and snow cover, were analysed without conclusive results. High accuracy levels, i.e. close to 1°C, similar to other validation studies carried out over simpler and much more homogenous land-cover types such as cultivated fields, have been achieved for night images acquired during the summer months, thus making these datasets reliable for their use in climatic models over mountainous regions.  相似文献

Both the great expansion of psychological studies and the inclusion of history as a compulsory subject in the psychology curriculum are crucial factors helping to understand the current state of affairs. In the present work the existence of mass transfer limitations in slurry, photocatalytic reactors is studied. Experimental validation is made in a flat plate reactor that is part of a recycling system. The reactor is described with a mathematical model previously developed [Ballari et al., 2008a. Chemical Engineering Journal 136, 50], considering a transient, two-dimensional mass balance (TDM). The complete reactor model was developed to show the existence of these effects, which result from the occurrence of concentration gradients in reaction space. They develop when these reactors are operated under some operating conditions whose effects should be always analyzed before assuming the validity of existence of perfect mixing in reaction space. Dichloroacetic acid (DCA) was the adopted model compound. To solve TDM, a kinetic expression for DCA acid was determined before under well mixed conditions [Ballari et al., 2009. Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research 48(4), 1847]. The studied variables are flow rate, catalyst loading, and irradiation rates. The experimental data agree quite well when they are interpreted in terms of the two-dimensional model (TDM) regardless of the operating mode. The perfect mixing model (PMM), normally employed to describe this and other types of slurry photoreactors, does not have the same level of universal application; i.e. it is restricted to perfect mixing, but in many cases far simpler to use. However, it can be concluded that when the photocatalytic reaction is not fast, employing catalyst loadings below 1 g L–1, irradiation rates at the reactor wall below 1×10?6 Einstein cm?2 s?1 and good mixing operation (Re>1700) it will be always safe to assume that mass transport limitations in the bulk of the fluid are nonexistent. In a typical batch reactor the above flow conditions are equivalent to very intense mixing. If the catalyst concentration is increased, the mixing conditions should be improved in the same proportion. Within limits, higher solid loadings can be compensated with lower irradiation rates [Ballari et al., 2008a. Chemical Engineering Journal 136, 50]. In addition, with the validated model, additional simulations are shown, operating the reactor under different virtual reactor thicknesses to widen amplitude of the reached conclusions. These findings will be useful in kinetic studies to prevent incursion in certain ranges of experimental conditions that could lead to erroneous interpretation of the obtained kinetic data.  相似文献

The photochemical behaviour of three relevant metabolites of the analgesic and antipyretic drug dipyrone, 4-methylaminoantipyrine (4-MAA), 4-formylaminoantipyrine (4-FAA) and 4-acetylaminoantipyrine (4-AAA), was evaluated under simulated solar irradiation (Suntest system). For 4-MAA, different aqueous solutions (synthetic seawater, freshwater and Milli-Q water) as well as different operational conditions were compared. According to the experimental results, 4-MAA resulted as being an easily degraded molecule by direct photolysis, with half-life times (t1/2) ranging from 0.12 to 0.58 h, depending on the irradiation conditions. Faster degradation was observed in synthetic waters, suggesting that the photolysis was influenced by the salt composition of the waters. However, no effect on the degradation rate was observed by the presence of natural photosensitizers (dissolved organic matter, nitrate ions). 4-FAA and 4-AAA showed slower photodegradation kinetics, with t1/2 of 24 and 28 h, respectively. A study of photoproduct identification was carried out by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-TOF-MS) (ESI positive mode), which allowed us to propose a tentative photodegradation pathway for 4-MAA and the identification of persistent by-products in all the cases. Finally, the application of an acute toxicity test (Daphnia magna) showed an increase in toxicity during the photolytic process, a consequence of the formation of toxic photoproducts.  相似文献

The scope of this work is to evaluate some properties of the oils and derived fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEE) from two different Jatropha Curcas species planted in Cuba. The properties that were determined include the acid value, peroxide value, p-anisidine value and fatty acid ethyl esters composition. In order to study the influence of the genus species and geographic conditions on the fuel properties, the oils from Jatropha Curcas planted in two regions of Cuba and their derived FAEE were analyzed and compared. The two plantations were in San José (SJ) and Guantanamo (Gt) representing respectively the western and eastern part of the island.The analyses indicated that the FAEE obtained from Guantanamo has a higher acid value and peroxide value compared with the FAEE from San José. The p-anisidine values did not show a clear trend and the results of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry indicated a similar FAEE composition. The results obtained by gas chromatography are in good agreements with previous reports.  相似文献
