A hydrous titanium(IV) oxide was prepared to study the adsorption characteristics and the separation of chromium species. Batch sorption studies have been carried out to determine the effect of pH on the sorption of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) on hydrous TiO2. An excellent separation efficiency of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) was obtained at pH 2. The adsorption percentage of Cr(VI) was above 99%, whereas that of the Cr(III) was less than 1% at this pH. The adsorption isotherm of Cr(VI) on hydrous TiO2 at pH 2 was in good agreement with the Langmuir isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) on TiO2 was 5 mg g(-1). The rate of adsorption of Cr(VI) by hydrous TiO2 with average particle diameter 250 and 500 microm has been studied under particle diffusion controlled conditions. The diffusion coefficients of Cr(VI) for both hydrous TiO2 having average particle diameter of 250 and 500 microm was calculated at pH 2 as 3.84 x 10(-10) m2 s(-1) and 8.86 x 10(-10) m2 s(-1), respectively.  相似文献

This paper evaluates the economic, energetic, and environmental feasibility of using two power generation units (PGUs) to operate a combined heat and power (CHP) system. Several benchmark buildings developed by the Department of Energy simulated using the weather data for Chicago, IL, are used to analyze the proposed configuration. This location has been selected because it usually provides favorable CHP system conditions in terms of cost and emission reduction. For the proposed configuration, one PGU is operated at base load to satisfy part of the electricity building requirements, whereas the other is used to satisfy the remaining electricity requirement operating following the electric load. The dual‐PGU CHP configuration (D‐CHP) is modeled for four different scenarios to determine the optimum operating range for the selected benchmark buildings. The dual‐PGU scenario is compared with the reference building using conventional technology to determine the benefits of this proposed system in terms of operational cost, primary energy reduction, and carbon dioxide emissions. The D‐CHP system results are also compared with a CHP system operating following the electric load (FEL) and base‐loaded CHP system. For three of the selected buildings, the proposed D‐CHP system provides comparable or greater savings in operating cost, primary energy consumption, and carbon dioxide emissions than the optimized conditions for base loading and FEL. In addition, the effect of operating the D‐CHP system only during certain months of the year on the overall operational cost is also evaluated. Results indicate that not operating the D‐CHP system for the months where the thermal load is too low is beneficial for the overall system performance. BACKGROUND: Ureolytic microbial carbonate precipitation (MCP) is a novel process for removing excess calcium from industrial effluents. This process is based on the hydrolization of urea to provide a suitable medium for the precipitation of Ca as CaCO3. RESULT: A toxicity identification evaluation was conducted on synthetic wastewater simulating wastewater from paper recycling to determine the inhibition or toxicity of chromium(VI) ions on the activities of a ureolytic mixed culture (UMC) with respect to the removal rate of COD and removal of Ca2+ in batch reactors. The 50% inhibiting concentration (IC50) and the 25% inhibiting concentration (IC25) values of Cr(VI) on UMC were determined as 40 and 18 mg L?1, respectively, for an exposure time of 1 day. The inhibitory effects of Cr(VI) were lower on UMC after longer exposure times of 3, 4 and 5 days. COD removal rate, ammonium production and Ca removal of samples with 512 mg Cr(VI) L?1 were significantly inhibited. CONCLUSION The present study has shown that the effects of different metallic species, organic toxicants and other environmental factors should be taken into account when removing problematic Ca and other possible elements from the environment using UMC. Heavy metals could potentially have a negative impact on methane-producing anaerobic granular sludge. The objective of this study was to investigate the inhibitory effect of zinc(II), chromium(VI), nickel(II), and cadmium(II) on the methane-producing activity of granular sludge sampled from the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor that treats the wastewaters of a yeast factory, for a range of concentrations between 0 and 128 mg L(-1). The modified Gompertz, Logistic, and Richards equations were applied to describe the inactivation of anaerobic culture by heavy metals. According to these models, the values of methane production potential (mL) for a heavy metal concentration of 128 mg L(-1) were in the following order: Ni (44.82+/-0.67)>Cd (28.73+/-0.11)>Cr (15.52+/-1.63)>Zn (0.65+/-0.00). The IC(50) values, the metal concentrations that cause a 50% reduction in the cumulative methane production over a fixed period of exposure time (24h), for the individual heavy metals were found to be in the following order: Zn (most toxic; 7.5 mg L(-1))>Cr (27 mg L(-1))>Ni (35 mg L(-1)) approximately Cd (least toxic; 36 mg L(-1)).  相似文献

The use of [FeFe]-hydrogenase enzymes for the biotechnological production of H2 or other reduced products has been limited by their sensitivity to oxygen (O2). Here, we apply a PCR-directed approach to determine the distribution, abundance, and diversity of hydA gene fragments along co-varying salinity and O2 gradients in a vertical water column of Great Salt Lake (GSL), UT. The distribution of hydA was constrained to water column transects that had high salt and relatively low O2 concentrations. Recovered HydA deduced amino acid sequences were enriched in hydrophilic amino acids relative to HydA from less saline environments. In addition, they harbored interesting variations in the amino acid environment of the complex H-cluster metalloenzyme active site and putative gas transfer channels that may be important for both H2 transfer and O2 susceptibility. A phylogenetic framework was created to infer the accessory cluster composition and quaternary structure of recovered HydA protein sequences based on phylogenetic relationships and the gene contexts of known complete HydA sequences. Numerous recovered HydA are predicted to harbor multiple N- and C-terminal accessory iron-sulfur cluster binding domains and are likely to exist as multisubunit complexes. This study indicates an important role for [FeFe]-hydrogenases in the functioning of the GSL ecosystem and provides new target genes and variants for use in identifying O2 tolerant enzymes for biotechnological applications.  相似文献

The insensitivity to energy quality is one of the disadvantages of an energy analysis when compared to an exergy analysis. It is only the exergy analysis that clearly reveals the degradation of energy quality in the processes of absorption and emission of solar radiation. The national spatial distribution of mean monthly exergy values of solar radiation over Turkey was mapped at 500-m resolution using universal kriging based on solar radiation data from 152 geo-referenced locations. Mean exergy value of solar radiation in Turkey was estimated at 13.5 ± 1.74MJm?2day?1, with a mean annual exergy-to-energy ratio of 0.93.  相似文献

With the self‐metathesis of 1‐octene to 7‐tetradecene catalyzed by Grubbs 1st generation [benzylidene‐bis(tricyclohexylphosphine)dichlororuthenium, ( 1 )] precursor at low concentrations (0.02 mol %) as basis, the effects of the solubility of the substrate in ionic liquids, the solvent polarity, as well as the influence of various impurities stemming from the preparation of ionic liquids have been investigated. The solubility of the substrate in the ionic liquid has little effect on the conversion, and the reaction is not mass‐transfer limited. While a higher polarity of an organic solvent increases the rate, it is independent of the polarity excerted by the cation of an ionic liquid. Of paramount importance for reproducible results is the purity of ionic liquids. An extensive study shows that catalyst deactivation by impurities increases in the order of water<halide<1‐methylimidazole. In the presence of water or 1‐methylimidazole impurities, the Grubbs‐Hoveyda precursor ( 3 ) is superior to both the 1st ( 1 ) and 2nd ( 2 ) generation Grubbs complexes. Under impurity‐free conditions or in the presence of chloride, the performance of 2 is equivalent to that of 3 .  相似文献

The present study aims to compare three different types of designed flat-plate solar air heaters, two having fins (Type II and Type III) and the other without fins (Type I), one of the heater with a fin had single glass cover (Type III) and the others had double glass covers (Type I and Type II). The energy and exergy output rates of the solar air heaters were evaluated for various air flow rates (25, 50 and 100 m3/m2 h), tilt angle (0°, 15° and 30°) and temperature conditions versus time. Based on the energy and exergy output rates, heater with double glass covers and fins (Type II) is more effective and the difference between the input and output air temperature is higher than of the others. Besides, it is found that the circulation time of air inside the heater played a role more important than of the number of transparent sheet. Lower air flow rates should be preferred in the applications of which temperature differences is more important.  相似文献

Sulfide removal by chemical precipitation from petroleum refinery wastewater was investigated. The wastewater samples were taken from the flocculation pond influent of TUPRAS Kirikkale Middle Anatolia Petroleum Refinery Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and physicochemical treatments using conventional coagulants which were partial precipitant [FeCl(3) . 6H(2)O and FeSO(4) . 7H(2)O] and coagulant-aids [Ca(OH)(2) and CaCO(3)] were applied to both raw and sulfide added wastewater. Sulfide and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies of Fe(3+) ions alone for sulfide added wastewaters having different pH values varied between 62-95 and 45-75%, respectively. In addition, removal efficiencies of sulfide (96-99%) and COD (50-80%) were obtained by using Fe(2+) ions together with Ca(OH)(2) as precipitant-aid under the same conditions. In experiments performed with raw wastewater which had different pH values, COD removal efficiencies of Fe(3+) and Fe(2+) ions together with Ca(OH)(2), were 50-80 and 32-50%, respectively.  相似文献
