Multilayer thin‐film structures in the wings of a butterfly; Papilio crino produce a colourful iridescence from reflected light. In this investigation, scanning electron microscope images show both the concave cover scales and pigmented air‐chamber ground scales. The microstructures with the concavities retroreflect incident light, thus causing the double reflection. This gives rise to both the colour mixing and polarisation conversion clearly depicted in the optical images. The result of the numerical and theoretical analysis via the CIELAB, and optical reflection and transmission of light through the multilayer stacks with the use of transfer method show that the emerging colouration on the Papilio crino is structural and is due to the combination of colours caused by multiple bounces within the concavities. Accumulation of toxic metals in liver, a rich natural source of essential elements, can present health risks to regular consumers of liver. A total of 35 fresh liver samples of cow, sheep, goat, pig, grass-cutter (Thryonomys swinderianus), gaint rat (Cricetomys gambianus), red deer (Cervus elaphus), chicken and antelope (Antilocapra americana) were obtained from three different markets in Accra and Kumasi, Ghana. Samples were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrometry and an automatic mercury analyzer. Levels of iron in the grass-cutter and pig of 500.5–645.4 mg kg?1 were the highest in the animal livers examined. Mn concentrations were highest in grass-cutter and rat liver, ranging 16.5–30.2 mg kg?1. The safe Cu and Zn permissible limits of 20 and 50 mg kg?1 were exceeded in 70 and 75% of the liver samples, respectively. Generally, for each animal group studied, at least 50% of the sample livers exceeded the Cd permissible limit of 0.5 mg kg?1. The levels of Pb, which ranged 1.3–13.8 mg kg?1, exceeded the proposed European Commission (EC) limit of 0.5 mg kg?1. Care must be taken by regular consumers of the iron-rich animal livers of grass-cutter, pig and rat because they also had the highest levels of Pb (in grass-cutter and pig) and Cd (in grass-cutter, rat and pig). The liver samples analyzed for Hg had values far below the permissible limit of 0.5 mg kg?1.  相似文献

The nutrient status of Weija and Kpong reservoirs, southeast Ghana, was assessed by determining seasonal indices and interannual changes. The nutrient levels were found to be higher in Weija Reservoir. However, ammonia did not follow that pattern. Seasonal distribution of nutrients also showed higher levels in Weija than in Kpong. Seasonal variation showed higher levels of nitrates in the rainy season at Weija than at Kpong; however, data from Kpong Reservoir involved considerable experimental error. The monthly trend of nitrates showed a unique pattern in the months of March and May, the main ploughing periods for farming in the Weija catchment area when most fertilizer is applied. In general, over a 5-year period, there were no trends in nutrient levels. However, for sulfates there was a gradual decrease in spatial distribution from 1993 to 1997. The seasonal distribution for sulfate increased slightly. Seasonal trends as well as a seasonal index were determined and in all cases Weija showed higher levels than Kpong derived from land-based fertilizers on the reservoir. On average, there was a higher seasonal index in the rainy season than in the dry season. However, the phosphate index in January at both Weija and Kpong was high. The seasonal index for both Weija and Kpong was high in the rainy season and low in the dry season. However, the phosphate index in January at both Weija and Kpong was high. The high nitrate index in March was due to rain in the latter part of that month. Ammonia–nitrogen in November also showed high levels; November was just after the rainy season so some influence from rain persisted.  相似文献

Transparent YAG ceramics were prepared by slip casting an aqueous dispersed mixture of commercial Al2O3 and Y2O3 powders. The powders were co-dispersed with poly(acrylic acid) and citric acid. Polyethylene glycol of 0.5 wt.% (PEG 4000) and 0.5 wt.% tetraethyl orthosilicate were added as binder and a sintering aid, respectively. Dried samples were vacuum sintered at 1800 °C for 16 h. In general, YAG ceramics cast from Newtonian suspensions were optically transparent and had optical transmittances >80% from 340 to 840 nm. Slightly flocculated dispersions, as evidenced by higher viscosity and non-Newtonian rheology, resulted in translucent samples with large pores and lower optical transmittances.  相似文献

The spawning and recruitment patterns of the major Cichlid fish species, including Hemichromis fasciatus, Oreochromis niloticus, Sarotherodon galilaeus, Tilapia zillii and other species, Auchenoglanis occidentalis, Brycinus nurse, Clarias gariepinus and Marcusenius senegalensis were studied for 24 months in Bontanga Reservoir, Ghana, using length‐based fish stock assessment approaches. The species spawned throughout the year, with two spawning pulses described as major and minor spawning seasons. The major spawning season occurred from March to September for the Cichlids, and from May to September for the other species. The minor spawning season, indicative of extended spawning, occurred from October to March for all the fish stocks. Fish spawning began with the onset of the rains in April/May, peaking by June/July, before the rainfall peak in August for all the fish stocks studied. Recruitment was found to occur throughout the year, with major and minor pulses coinciding with the major and minor spawning seasons. Accordingly, the most appropriate time for a possible closed fishing period appears to be from June to August, 1 month after the start of, and before the end of, the rains. The estimated mean standard length (Lm) for first time spawners of A. occidentalis, B. nurse, C. gariepinus and H. faciatus were 11.7, 12.7, 2.7 and 7.5 cm respectively. The estimated maturity–length ratio of 0.4 and 0.2 for O. niloticus, S. galilaeus and T. zillii were lower than the known 0.7 for normal growth, suggesting the tilapias matured faster, and at a smaller size, in the reservoir. Apparent sexual precocity associated with early maturity, year‐round spawning and recruitment were some important adaptations found to have sustained the reservoir fisheries, even during high fishing pressures. For conservation and sustainable exploitation of the fisheries, instituting a closed fishing season, mesh size regulations, withdrawal rights and a community‐based fishery management system are recommended.  相似文献

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is a commonly cultivated root crop in tropical and subtropical regions, including Ghana. Different varieties of sweet potato have been bred, in order to expand its utilisation within the food and industrial sector. This study analysed flours made from 12 recently developed Ghanaian sweet potato varieties in terms of their amylose and amylopectin molecular fractions and amylopectin chain length distribution. Starch content of the sweet potato flours ranged from 49 to 77 g/100 g dry matter, with 11 of the varieties containing above 60 g/100 g dry matter. An orange-fleshed variety, Apomuden, had the lowest amount of starch (48.9 g/100 g dry matter), while the cream-fleshed variety Histarch had the highest (77.3 g/100 g dry matter). The flours from the 12 sweet potato varieties had intermediate amounts of amylose, within the range 10–30 g/100 g dry matter, and showed typical molecular distribution according to size-exclusion chromatography (SEC). The fine structures of amylopectin, as revealed by anion-exchange chromatography, contained features common for starches of C-type X-ray pattern, but some structural differences were also observed.  相似文献

Replacement of noble‐metal platinum catalysts with cheaper, operationally stable, and highly efficient electrocatalysts holds huge potential for large‐scale implementation of clean energy devices. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and metal dichalcogenides (MDs) offer rich platforms for design of highly active electrocatalysts owing to their flexibility, ultrahigh surface area, hierarchical pore structures, and high catalytic activity. Herein, an advanced electrocatalyst based on a vertically aligned MoS2 nanosheet encapsulated Mo–N/C framework with interfacial Mo–N coupling centers is reported. The hybrid structure exhibits robust multifunctional electrocatalytic activity and stability toward the hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, and oxygen reduction reaction. Interestingly, it further displays high‐performance of Zn–air batteries as a cathode electrocatalyst with a high power density of ≈196.4 mW cm?2 and a voltaic efficiency of ≈63 % at 5 mA cm?2, as well as excellent cycling stability even after 48 h at 25 mA cm?2. Such outstanding electrocatalytic properties stem from the synergistic effect of the distinct chemical composition, the unique three‐phase active sites, and the hierarchical pore framework for fast mass transport. This work is expected to inspire the design of advanced and performance‐oriented MOF/MD hybrid‐based electrocatalysts for wider application in electrochemical energy devices.  相似文献

In spite of receiving a significant amount of food aid, achieving food security has been a major problem in Ethiopia. The claim is evidenced from the 2010 Global Hunger Index where the country fared dismally, coming only fourth from the bottom. There are several factors attributing to this problem of food insecurity in a country like Ethiopia which depends highly on agriculture and allied activities. Some of the factors can be linked to low food production and productivity thereby leading to pervasive poverty. In order to assess these factors, the study was conducted on some selected members of agro-pastoral communities of Somali and Oromia regions in Ethiopia. Using availability of food in the household for the last one month as a proxy for food security, the estimated results of a logistic regression model indicated that the most significant factors affecting household food security are educational level of the spouse and that of the household head, size of farm land, availability of household assets including livestock, peace and security. The paper suggests some leads to how these amenities and resources can be provided to household members as they endeavor to reduce food insecurity.  相似文献
