A crucial step in manufacturing microcircuits is the wire bonding process in which a very thin gold wire must be formed to connect two surfaces in the microcircuit. The quality of the wire bond can be measured by visual inspection and a pull test—both of which are high-reliability, high-cost approaches to statistical process control. Westinghouse wanted to develop a high-reliability, low-cost quality assurance system. In this paper, we report on a year-long study to construct a neural network model that is capable of predicting the quality of wire bonds. The results of our modeling efforts reveal that neural networks are useful tools for statistical process control problems.  相似文献

Alewives (Alosa pseudoharengus), the major prey fish for Lake Ontario, contain thiaminase. They are associated with development of a thiamine deficiency in salmonines which greatly increases the potential for developing an early mortality syndrome (EMS). To assess the possible effects of thiamine deficiency on salmonine reproduction we measured egg thiamine concentrations for five species of Lake Ontario salmonines. From this we estimated the proportion of families susceptible to EMS based on whether they were below the ED20, the egg thiamine concentration associated with 20% mortality due to EMS. The ED20s were 1.52, 2.63, and 2.99 nmol/g egg for Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush), and coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), respectively. Based on the proportion of fish having egg thiamine concentrations falling below the ED20, the risk of developing EMS in Lake Ontario was highest for lake trout, followed by coho (O. kisutch), and Chinook salmon, with the least risk for rainbow trout (O. mykiss). For lake trout from western Lake Ontario, mean egg thiamine concentration showed significant annual variability during 1994 to 2003, when the proportion of lake trout at risk of developing EMS based on ED20 ranged between 77 and 100%. Variation in the annual mean egg thiamine concentration for western Lake Ontario lake trout was positively related (p < 0.001, r2 = 0.94) with indices of annual adult alewife biomass. While suggesting the possible involvement of density-dependent changes in alewives, the changes are small relative to egg thiamine concentrations when alewife are not part of the diet and are of insufficient magnitude to allow for natural reproduction by lake trout.  相似文献

This paper presents a novel cascaded conference network that provides distributed processing and signal transmission among members of disjoint sets of generic send/receive devices called conferees. It assumes an online request model in which idle groups of conferees may request the formation of a conference interconnection. Once a conference is established, all conferees remain connected until the entire conference is dissolved. The Hypercube Sandwich Network (HSN) consists of two components. A bidirectional permutation network is used for routing purposes to and from a hypercube of special processing elements for the purpose of conference formation. The HSN achieves strictly nonblocking performance for N conferees using O(Nlog N) processing elements, and this is shown to be tight to within a log 1/4 N factor. Previous constructions required a quadratic number of processing elements for strictly nonblocking performance or could only provide wide-sense nonblocking conferencing. If the stronger requirement is made that the communication delay is logarithmic in the conference size, a simple algorithm is presented for wide-sense nonblocking conferencing in an HSN with O(N log N) processing elements.An earlier version of this paper was presented at the 1995 International Conference on Parallel Processing Techniques and Applications.  相似文献

We consider the problem of a module interacting with an external interface (environment) where the interaction is expected to satisfy some system specification Φ. While we have the full implementation details of the module, we are only given a partial external specification for the interface. The interface specification being partial (incomplete) means that the interface displays only a strict subset of the behaviors allowed by the interface specification.Based on the assumption that interface specifications are typically incomplete, we address the question of whether we can tighten the interface specification into a strategy, consistent with the given partial specification, that will guarantee that all possible interactions resulting from possible behaviors of the module will satisfy the system specification Φ. We refer to such a tighter specification as Φ-guaranteeing specification. Rather than verifying whether the interface, which is often an off-the-shelf component, satisfies the tighter specification, the paper proposes a construction of a run-time monitor which continuously checks the existence of a Φ-guaranteeing interface.We view the module and the external interface as players in a 2-player game. The interface has a winning strategy if it can guarantee that no matter what the module does, the overall specification Φ is met. The problem of incomplete specifications is resolved by allowing the interface to follow any strategy consistent with the interface specification. Our approach essentially combines traditional run-time monitoring and static analysis. This allows going beyond the focus of traditional run-time monitoring tools – error detection in the execution trace, towards the focus of the static analysis – bug detection in the programs.  相似文献

Increasingly, the United States is becoming internationalized as a result of sophisticated communication technologies that put us in touch with countries known previously to only a few, through economic development and multinational investment, and by the immigration of people who are sometimes fleeing hostile homelands. US citizens, like others abroad, will need to be responsive to the demands of a multiethnic, multiracial, and multinational society. The challenges of this changing world can and will range from such dilemmas as ethical decisions of who can and will have access to expensive technology that saves and prolongs life; to the development of conflict management strategies for peaceful coexistence with neighbors whose behaviors, beliefs, and values are strongly shaped by their religious, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds and socioeconomic circumstances. With the inauguration of this section, US psychology is invited to consider its contribution to meeting the needs of a changing society. Deep water cooling involves using naturally cold water as a heat sink in a heat exchange system, eliminating the need for conventional air conditioning. The cold water is drawn from near the bottom or below the thermocline of a nearby water body. In this study Canadian deep water cooling systems in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Toronto, Ontario were documented. The expected economic and environmental benefits were realized, but barriers to large-scale adoption of the technology were apparent. This technology requires that a client with a large cooling need is near a deep, cold body of water, and payback times vary depending on the site. The public–private partnership approach proved to be beneficial in these two examples, and the Toronto approach in which many buildings are serviced at once by combining municipal pumping capacity can deliver cost savings on a shorter time span. Deep water cooling represents a successful example of a niche accumulation process and an example of electricity demand displacement. Many other locations in which heavy air conditioning users are located next to deep, cold water bodies could use this technology; several such sites exist in Canadian urban areas.  相似文献
