Small hydropower plants (installed power below 10 MW) are generally considered less impacting than larger plants, and this has stimulated their rapid spread, with a developing potential that is not exhausted yet. However, since they can cause environmental impacts, especially in case of cascade installations, there is the need to operate them in a more sustainable way, e.g. considering ecosystem needs and by developing low-impacting technologies. In this paper, an assessment was conducted to estimate how the environmental flow and the plant spatial density affect the small hydropower potential (considering run-of-river schemes, diversion type, DROR) in the European Union. The potential of DROR is 79 TWh/y under the strictest environmental constraints considered, and 1,710 TWh/y under the laxest constraints. The potential of low-impacting micro technologies (< 100 kW) was also assessed, showing that the economic potential of hydrokinetic turbines in rivers is 1.2 TWh/y, that of water wheels in old mills is 1.6 TWh/y, and the hydropower potential of water and wastewater networks is 3.1 TWh/y, at an average investment cost of 5,000 €/kW.

Different forms of sudden cardiac death have been described, including a recently identified form of genetic arrhythmogenic disorder, named “Triadin KnockOut Syndrome” (TKOS). TKOS is associated with recessive mutations in the TRDN gene, encoding for TRIADIN, but the pathogenic mechanism underlying the malignant phenotype has yet to be completely defined. Moreover, patients with TKOS are often refractory to conventional treatment, substantiating the need to identify new therapeutic strategies in order to prevent or treat cardiac events. The zebrafish (Danio rerio) heart is highly comparable to the human heart in terms of functions, signal pathways and ion channels, representing a good model to study cardiac disorders. In this work, we generated the first zebrafish model for trdn loss-of-function, by means of trdn morpholino injections, and characterized its phenotype. Although we did not observe any gross cardiac morphological defect between trdn loss-of-function embryos and controls, we found altered cardiac rhythm that was recovered by the administration of arrhythmic drugs. Our model will provide a suitable platform to study the effect of TRDN mutations and to perform drug screening to identify new pharmacological strategies for patients carrying TRDN mutations.  相似文献

In the Mediterranean Sea, blooms of Ostreopsis cf. ovata and Ostreopsis siamensis have become increasingly frequent in the last decade and O. cf. ovata was found to produce palytoxin-like compounds (putative palytoxin, ovatoxin-a, -b, -c, -d and -e), a class of highly potent toxins. The environmental conditions seem to play a key role in influencing the abundance of Ostreopsis spp. High cell densities are generally recorded in concomitance with relatively high temperature and salinity and low hydrodynamics conditions. In this study the effects of temperature and salinity on the growth and toxicity of an Adriatic O. cf. ovata isolate were investigated. The highest growth rates of the Adriatic strain were recorded for cultures grown at 20 °C and at salinity values of 36 and 40, in accordance with natural bloom surveys. Toxicity was affected by growth conditions, with the highest toxin content on a per cell basis being measured at 25 °C and salinity 32.However, the highest total toxin content on a per litre basis was recorded at 20 °C and salinity 36, since under such conditions the growth yield was the highest.O. cf. ovata had lethal effects on Artemia nauplii and juvenile sea basses, and produced haemolysis of sheep erythrocytes. A comparison between haemolysis neutralization assay and HR LC-MS results showed a good correlation between haemolytic effect and total toxin content measured through HR LC-MS. Considering the increasing need for rapid and sensitive methods to detect palytoxin in natural samples, the haemolytic assay appears a useful method for preliminary quantification of the whole of palytoxin-like compounds in algal extracts.  相似文献

Oceanographic cruises were carried out monthly from June 1999 to July 2002 to follow the mucilage formation process in the Northern Adriatic Sea. Results show that in correspondence with these events the dinoflagellate Gonyaulax fragilis (Schütt) Kofoid was observed both in the water column and within mucilage aggregates. In the water column, increasing abundances were observed from May until July, with values never exceeding 8500 cells l(-1). Much higher densities were observed within superficial gelatinous aggregates (22800-3400000 cells l(-1)). In mucilage samples, a large number of decomposing cells were present, together with abundant alive cells, enveloped in exudates. G. fragilis isolated from mucilage samples was cultured in three different culture media; it was characterized by a low growth rate but it produced a high amount of polysaccharides. The highest yield both in terms of cell number and carbohydrate production was observed in the medium having the highest nitrogen and phosphorus content and the lowest N/P ratio. The monomeric composition of G. fragilis carbohydrates, compared with that of mucilage samples, showed that in both natural and cultured samples galactose was the most abundant sugar; in addition, an overall good correlation, especially between the monomeric carbohydrate composition of G. fragilis grown in f/2 medium and that of a mucilage sample in which this species was present in high density, was observed.  相似文献

The main objective of this study is to derive a flexible approach based on machine learning techniques, i.e. Support Vector Regression (SVR), for monthly river discharge forecasting with 1-month lead time. The proposed approach has been tested over 300 alpine basins, in order to explore advantages and limits in an operational perspective. The main relevant input features in the forecast performances are the snow cover areas and the discharge behavior of the previous years. Forecasts obtained by training SVR machine on single gauging stations show better performances than the average of the previous 10 years, considered as benchmark, in 94% of the cases, with a mean improvement of about 48% in root mean square error. In case of poorly gauged basins, to increase the number of training sample, multiple basins have been considered to train the SVR machine. In this case, performances are still better than the benchmark, even if worse than those of SVR machine trained on single basins, with a decrease of the performances ranging from 13% to 54%.  相似文献

Bacteria and diatom strains from the Adriatic Sea were investigated, under standard and altered environmental conditions, for carbohydrate production and for the presence of specific biomarkers. Algae from P-depleted cultures showed an increase in extracellular carbohydrate production, a significantly lower chlorophyll a content and unchanged total lipid levels. However, the fatty acid composition of algal cultures was severely affected by low P levels, in that, total saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids increased and total polyunsaturated fatty acids decreased. Marine heterotrophic bacteria resulted enriched by 4 to 6 orders of magnitude in mucilage samples respect to surrounding seawater, unlike other groups of bacteria such as the non-halophylic heterotrophs. The major fatty acids detected in bacteria were 16:0 and 18:1n-7; the uneven fatty acids 17:0i, 17:0 and 17:1 also constituted an important component of various strains and, as a result, the total monounsaturated fraction represented the main component of total fatty acids. All the mucilage samples analysed shared the same general fatty acid composition features with a high amount of saturated components, especially 16:0; typical marine polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3, were found at very low levels. With regard to the sterol composition, the analysed algal species and bacteria showed that different compounds prevailed in the different species, and under P-deprivation sterol distribution resulted differently affected in the various algal species. In mucilage samples an overall prevalence of cholesterol was observed and, among 4alpha-methylsterols, constantly present, dinosterol prevailed in all samples. Vibrational IR spectroscopic analyses confirmed the main results obtained with the GC analysis: a higher unsaturation degree in nutrient replete diatom cultures than in P-depleted ones, a lower amount of P-containing compounds in the latter, bacterial lipid profiles with a high amount of free carboxylic acids and/or ketones and a low unsaturation degree and, finally, mucilage samples with a very low unsaturation degree. All these results allowed some speculations on the involvement of the various microbial and phytoplankton components in mucilage genesis.  相似文献
