Restoration of a wild-produced lake trout Salvelinus namaycush population in Lake Ontario has not been successful despite the adult population often meeting or exceeding restoration targets. Lack of high-quality spawning habitat in Lake Ontario is suggested as one impediment to recruitment of wild lake trout, although the quantity and location of spawning habitat is poorly understood. If high-quality spawning habitat is limited in Lake Ontario, lake trout may be using uncommon spawning locations such as rivers. Anecdotal angler accounts point to the Niagara River as a lake trout spawning location. To better understand the potential of the Niagara River as a spawning location, egg and juvenile fish collections were conducted 12–14 river kilometers from the mouth of the Niagara River from 2010 to 2012; and mature female lake trout with surgically implanted acoustic tags were monitored from 2015 to 2019. Genetic analyses confirmed 60% of collected eggs and 93% of collected post-hatch juvenile fish in the Niagara River were lake trout. Tagged female lake trout returned to the Niagara River over consecutive years during the spawning season. The short duration of lake trout presence in the river (mean = 56 days/year) suggests female lake trout use the Niagara River primarily for spawning. Diversity in spawning locations may provide lake trout population’s resilience against environmental variability through a portfolio effect. Improved identification of riverine spawning locations, including their overall contribution to wild recruitment, may be a useful tool for managers to restore a wild-produced population of lake trout in Lake Ontario.  相似文献

The strategy for the permanent disposal of high-level nuclear waste in Canada involves sealing it in a copper-coated steel container and burying it in a deep geologic repository. During the early emplacement period, the container could be exposed to warm humid air, which could result in the condensation of nitric acid, produced by the radiolysis of the humid air, on the copper surface. Previous studies have suggested that both nitrate and oxygen reduction will drive copper corrosion, with the nitrate reduction kinetics being dependent on the concentration of soluble copper(I) produced by the anodic dissolution of copper in the reaction with oxygen. This study focused on determining the kinetics of nitrate and oxygen reduction and elucidating the synergistic relationship between the two processes. This was investigated using corrosion potential and polarization measurements in conjunction with scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Oxygen reduction was shown to be the dominant cathodic reaction with the oxidation of copper(I) to copper(II) by nitrate, promoting the catalytic cycle involving the reaction of copper(II) with copper to reproduce copper(I).  相似文献

Following percutaneous coronary intervention, vascular closure devices (VCDs) are increasingly used to reduce time to ambulation, enhance patient comfort, and reduce potential complications compared with traditional manual compression. Newer techniques include complicated, more or less automated suture devices, local application of pads or the use of metal clips and staples. These techniques often have the disadvantage of being time consuming, expensive or not efficient enough. The VCD failure rate in association with vascular complications of 2.0–9.5%, depending on the type of VCD, is still not acceptable. Therefore, the aim of this study is to develop a self-expanding quick vascular closure device (QVCD) made from a bioabsorbable elastic polymer that can be easily applied through the placed introducer sheath. Bioabsorbable block-co-polymers were synthesized and the chemical and mechanical degradation were determined by in vitro tests. The best fitting polymer was selected for further investigation and for microinjection moulding. After comprehensive haemocompatibility analyses in vitro, QVCDs were implanted in arterial vessels following arteriotomy for different time points in sheep to investigate the healing process. The in vivo tests proved that the new QVCD can be safely placed in the arteriotomy hole through the existing sheath instantly sealing the vessel. The degradation time of 14 days found in vitro was sufficient for vessel healing. After 4 weeks, the remaining QVCD material was covered by neointima. Overall, our experiments showed the safety and feasibility of applying this novel QVCD through an existing arterial sheath and hence encourage future work with larger calibers.  相似文献

We present measurements of the electron temperature using gate-defined quantum dots formed in a GaAs 2D electron gas in both direct transport and charge sensing mode. Decent agreement with the refrigerator temperature was observed over a broad range of temperatures down to 10 mK. Upon cooling nuclear demagnetization stages integrated into the sample wires below 1 mK, the device electron temperature saturates, remaining close to 10 mK. The extreme sensitivity of the thermometer to its environment as well as electronic noise complicates temperature measurements but could potentially provide further insight into the device characteristics. We discuss thermal coupling mechanisms, address possible reasons for the temperature saturation and delineate the prospects of further reducing the device electron temperature.  相似文献

Coatings are applied to surfaces for a variety of reasons: to enhance their appearance, to protect the substrate, to augment the adhesion to other layers, or to functionalize them for further reactions. To evaluate the efficacy of the coating, it is often necessary to analyze the substrate and the coating to ensure that the needed characteristics are present. To this end, the use of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), contact angle, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) can provide information about the surface composition, its morphology, and its ability to be wetted with various solvents. Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray analysis (SEM/EDX) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) can provide a clear picture of the near surface components as well as the continuity of coatings. All of these aspects are valuable in evaluating a coating and essential when problems are encountered. The application of these techniques to the analysis of coatings is discussed.  相似文献

Principal component analysis (PCA) is a statistical method used to find combinations of variables or factors that describe the most important trends in the data. PCA has been combined with time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) data to extract new information and find relations between species contained in complex systems. Monolayers of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine alone and mixed with palmitoyloleoylphosphatidylglycerol prepared using the Langmuir-Blodgett technique are discussed. PCA software provides image scores and corresponding loadings for each significant principal component. Image plots of the scores show the spatial distribution and intensity of the species defined by the loading plots (mass spectral features). The intensity and resolution of the image scores can result in substantial improvement over that of the regular TOF-SIMS images especially when static conditions are used for small analysis areas. Also, some of the effects of topography and matrix in the images can be removed, allowing for a better presentation of chemical variations.  相似文献

To investigate the role of herpesviral genes in tumourigenesis, transgenic mice were generated expressing STP-C, a transformation associated protein of the lymphoma inducing herpesvirus saimiri. Epithelial tumours developed in the salivary gland, pancreas, thymus and liver of transgenic mice within the first weeks of life. Thus, the target cells for tumour formation in the transgenic mice were surprisingly different from those of the herpesvirus from which the oncogene was derived. Our results identify STP-C as a herpesvirus oncogene sufficient for tumour induction without the cooperation of other viral gene products. Furthermore, the results demonstrate pleiotropic transforming capabilities of the STP-C oncogene and suggest that the specificity of lymphoma induction by the virus is determined by factors other than the oncogene itself.  相似文献

Effects of carbonate-bicarbonate, orthophosphate, and pyrophosphate on the toxicity of copper (II) to Daphnia magna were studied at constant pH and total hardness. Mortality rates and reciprocal survival times were directly correlated with cupric (Cu2+) and copper hydroxy (Cu(OH)n) ion activities as determined by equilibrium calculations. Toxicity was negatively related to activities of soluble copper carbonate (CuCO3) and other complexes, and was found to be independent of dissolved copper or total copper concentrations.  相似文献
