Late complication of laparoscopic salpingoophorectomy: retained foreign body presenting as an acute abdomen

The technique of immunocytochemistry was used to identify myoglobin in kidney, confirming a diagnosis of neuroleptic malignant syndrome following an otherwise obscure autopsy in a decomposed body. The features of neuroleptic malignant syndrome are reviewed with a differential diagnosis of myoglobin renal casts. The report emphasizes a thorough and detailed assessment of deaths which occur during treatment with neuroleptic drugs.     

Vibrational analysis of functionalized polyolefins/poly(vinylchloride) blends

Polyolefins functionalized with diethylmaleate were mixed with poly(vinylchloride) (PVC) in different compositions. Intermolecular interactions involving the carbonyl groups of the side chains of the functionalized polyolefins and methine hydrogens of PVC were investigated by means of infrared spectroscopy. The major flexibility of the ester groups attached to the backbone chains, with respect to polyesters, seems to increase the capability of such groups to interact with groups of more polar polymers, thus allowing prediction of easier miscibility, which however also depends on the starting polyolefin structure and function-alization degree.     

Bioresorbable and bioactive polymer/Bioglass® composites with tailored pore structure for tissue engineering applications

An overview about the development of porous bioresorbable composite materials for applications as scaffolds in tissue engineering is presented. A thermally induced phase separation method was developed to fabricate porous foam-like structures of poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) containing bioactive glass particle additions (up to 50 wt.%) and exhibiting well-defined, oriented and interconnected porosity. The in vitro bioactivity and the degradability of the composite foams were investigated in contact with phosphate buffer saline (PBS). Weight loss, water absorption and molecular weight measurements were used to monitor the polymer degradation after incubation periods of up to 7 weeks in PBS. It was found that the presence of bioactive glass retards the polymer degradation rate for the time period investigated. The present results show a way of controlling the in vitro degradation behaviour of PLGA porous composite scaffolds by tailoring the concentration of bioactive glass.     

Unusual essential oils with aromatic properties

Summary The essential oil obtained by steam distillation of cinchona bark (Cinchona spp.,Rubiaceae family) — a plant well known for its pharmacological properties, also employed in the food industry, especially in making liqueurs - was investigated. The oil, of completely unknown chemical composition, was analyzed by GLC and GLC/MS after separation on a silica gel column, and one hundred components were identified. The presence of 2-hexyl-3-methylmaleic anhydride is rather unusual.

Ungewöhnliche ätherische Öle mit aromatischen Eigenschaften. Die flüchtigen Aromastoffe der China-Rinde

Zusammenfassung Es wurde ätherisches Öl analysiert, das durch Wasserdampfdestillation von Chinarinde (Cinchona spp. derRubiaceae-Familie) gewonnen wurde. Diese Pflanze ist aufgrund ihrer pharmakologischen Eigenschaften bekannt und wird auch in der Lebensmittelindustrie verwendet, ganz besonders für die Likör- und Magenbitterherstellung. Die chemische Zusammensetzung dieses Öls war unbekannt. Nach Abtrennung auf einer Kieselgelsäule wurden im Öl mit GLC und GLC/MS etwa 100 Verbindungen identifiziert. Das Vorhandensein von 2-Hexyl-3-methyl-maleinsäureanhydrid ist ziemlich ungewöhnlich.

     

Evidence-Based Solutions for Overcoming Access Barriers, Decreasing Attrition, and Promoting Change With Underserved Families.

Various definitions exist for what constitutes family therapy. In this article, we consider family therapy to encompass any intervention that targets family interactions and conceptualizes problems as existing beyond individual clients. Numerous individual studies and several quantitative reviews have established family therapy as an effective treatment modality and the treatment of choice for many disorders. However, critiques of existing service provision highlight the unfortunate fact that numerous barriers to treatment exist at multiple levels of the broader ecology, preventing many families from benefiting from these services. Optical properties of amorphous carbon thin films prepared by plasma deposition in a graphite hollow cathode

Carbon films have been produced using a graphite hollow cathode and an r.f. plasma of hydrogen or hydrogen and argon. No hydrocarbon gas was used. The films were subjected to heat treatments up to 700 °C in air. The optical properties of the films were studied using Fourier transform IR, UV-visible, Raman, ellipsometry and photoluminescence techniques before and after the annealing. Films prepared without argon have a narrower band gap and a different photoluminescence response from films prepared with argon. The index of refraction was seen to have values between 1.7 and 2.2 depending on the preparation conditions. The optical band gap of the films was generally greater than 2 eV and the annealing process both increased the gap and reduced the density of states responsible for the large photoluminescence signal.

We deduce that any four-connected three-colorable plane graph is the contact graph of a family of segments and that any four-colored planar graph without an induced C₄ using four colors is the intersection graph of a family of straight line segments.
