In this paper we propose a versatile point process as model for a large class of variable bit rate sources and their superpositions. The process belongs to the class of discrete-time batch Markovian arrival processes (D-BMAP). Its use leads to computationally tractable and accurate solutions for various performance measures of the related statistical multiplexer: buffer occupancy distribution, cell loss probability, conditional cell loss probability. Moreover it is shown that the output process of the multiplexer belongs to the same class of processes.  相似文献

Performance Evaluation of Layer 3 Low Latency Handoff Mechanisms   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
This paper investigates the performance of two Layer 3 low latency handoff mechanisms proposed by the IETF, namely Pre- and Post-Registration. These protocols use Layer 2 triggers to reduce the built-in delay components of Mobile IP. We propose a simple analytical model that allows assessing the packet loss and the delay characteristics of these mechanisms. We describe several handoff implementations over a wireless access based on the IEEE 802.11 standard and analyze several implementation issues. Finally we study the scalability of the protocols using an OPNET simulation.  相似文献

The increasing use of wireless networks and the constant miniaturization of electrical devices has empowered the development of Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs). In these networks various sensors are attached on clothing or on the body or even implanted under the skin. The wireless nature of the network and the wide variety of sensors offer numerous new, practical and innovative applications to improve health care and the Quality of Life. The sensors of a WBAN measure for example the heartbeat, the body temperature or record a prolonged electrocardiogram. Using a WBAN, the patient experiences a greater physical mobility and is no longer compelled to stay in the hospital. This paper offers a survey of the concept of Wireless Body Area Networks. First, we focus on some applications with special interest in patient monitoring. Then the communication in a WBAN and its positioning between the different technologies is discussed. An overview of the current research on the physical layer, existing MAC and network protocols is given. Further, cross layer and quality of service is discussed. As WBANs are placed on the human body and often transport private data, security is also considered. An overview of current and past projects is given. Finally, the open research issues and challenges are pointed out.  相似文献

In wireless orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) based networks like Long Term Evolution (LTE) or Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) a technique called adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) is applied. With AMC, different modulation and coding schemes (MCSs) are used to serve different users in order to maximise the throughput and range. The used MCS depends on the quality of the radio link between the base station and the user. Data is sent towards users with a good radio link with a high MCS in order to utilise the radio resources more efficiently while a low MCS is used for users with a bad radio link. Using AMC however has an impact on the cell capacity as the quality of a radio link varies when users move around; this can even lead to situations where the cell capacity drops to a point where there are too little radio resources to serve all users. AMC and the resulting varying cell capacity notably has an influence on admission control (AC). AC is the algorithm that decides whether new sessions are allowed to a cell or not and bases its decisions on, amongst others, the cell capacity. The analytical model that is developed in this paper models a cell with varying capacity caused by user mobility using a continuous -time Markov chain (CTMC). The cell is divided into multiple zones, each corresponding to the area in which data is sent towards users using a certain MCS and transitions of users between these zones are considered. The accuracy of the analytical model is verified by comparing the results obtained with it to results obtained from simulations that model the user mobility more realistically. This comparison shows that the analytical model models the varying cell capacity very accurately; only under extreme conditions differences between the results are noticed. The developed analytical and simulation models are then used to investigate the effects of a varying cell capacity on AC. Also, an optimisation algorithm that adapts the parameter of the AC algorithm which determines the amount of resources that are reserved in order to mitigate the effects of the varying cell capacity is studied using the models. Updating the parameter of the AC algorithm is done by reacting to certain triggers that indicate good or bad performance and adapt the parameters of the AC algorithm accordingly. Results show that using this optimisation algorithm improves the quality of service (QoS) that is experienced by the users.  相似文献

Achieving QoS (quality of service) in ad hoc wireless networks (AWNs) has been a research topic in the last years. In this paper we describe a QoS reservation mechanism for Multirate AWNs that allows bandwidth allocation on a per flow basis. By multirate we refer to those networks where wireless nodes are able to dynamically switch among several link rates. This allows nodes to select the highest possible transmission rate for exchanging data, independently for each neighbor.  相似文献

A contention resolution scheme for an uplink contention channel in a wireless access network is presented. The scheme consists of a tree algorithm, namely the identifier splitting algorithm (ISA), combined with a polling scheme. Initially, ISA is used, but at a certain level of the tree, the scheme switches to polling of the stations. This scheme is further enhanced by skipping a few levels in the tree when starting the algorithm (both in a static and a dynamic way) and by allowing multiple instants simultaneously. An analytical model of the system and its variants leads to the evaluation of its performance, by means of the delay density function and the throughput characteristics. This model is used to investigate the influence of the packet arrival rate, the instant at which the ISA scheme switches to polling, the starting level of the ISA scheme, and the use of multiple instances on the mean delay, the delay quantiles, and the throughput  相似文献

The provisioning of wireless data services in the railway environment will become increasingly important for train operators and train constructors in the upcoming years. In this paper, we present models to predict train-to-wayside wireless data communications characteristics in terms of throughput, jitter, and packet loss predictions for 2G/3G networks. To this end, an extensive measurement campaign is carried out along a Belgian Intercity railway track. Based on these measurements, we apply a multiple regression, window mean, and autoregressive model. We find that the window mean model is recommended for the prediction of throughput and jitter, while the multiple regression model is more favorable for the prediction of packet loss. The implementation of these predictions in train-to-wayside communication systems can enhance the provisioning of seamless network connection necessary for a wide variety of data services.  相似文献

This paper presents a performance analysis of the Identifier Splitting Algorithm combined with polling, a contention resolution scheme used to inform the Base Station about the bandwidth needs of the Mobile Station in a wireless ATM network. An analytical model leads to the evaluation of performance parameters which determine the throughput and the access delay of the algorithm for different system parameters. This analysis is used to investigate the influence of the system parameters on the performance, from which guidelines for parameter tuning can be derived.  相似文献

In this paper we present a dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm for Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPON), which makes use of the Multipoint Control Protocol (MPCP) with threshold reporting and with inter- and intra-ONU priority scheduling. Three varieties of this algorithm are compared under both symmetric and asymmetric traffic conditions, by means of a detailed simulation program, regarding average packet delay for several priorities, delay variation for constant bit rate (CBR) traffic and bandwidth utilization. Two types of intra-ONU priority scheduling algorithms are considered, being full and interval priority scheduling, called FPS and IPS, respectively. It is shown that by combining IPS with the threshold reporting mechanism one can achieve a nearly optimal bandwidth utilization (by avoiding nearly all fragmentation losses). IPS, however, causes an increased packet delay and delay variation for CBR traffic in comparison with FPS. In order to eliminate this drawback, we combine the IPS scheduling algorithm with a rate-based scheme for the highest priority (CBR) traffic. The combined IPSA algorithm provides an interesting trade-off between the efficiency, which is still near to the optimal, and the delay characteristics of time critical applications. Finally, we also demonstrate that unfairness arises with FPS under asymmetric traffic conditions, that is, ONUs with more best effort traffic are favored by FPS. Whereas asymmetric traffic conditions only slightly affect the fairness of IPS under low load conditions.  相似文献

The major goal of optical packet switching (OPS) is to match switching technology to the huge capacities provided by (D)WDM. A crucial issue in packet switched networks is the avoidance of packet losses stemming from contention. In OPS, contention can be solved using a combination of exploitation of the wavelength domain (through wavelength conversion) and buffering. To provide optical buffering, fiber delay lines (FDLs) are used. In this paper, we focus on an optical packet switch with recirculating FDL buffers and wavelength converters. We introduce the Markovian arrival process with marked transitions (MMAP), which has very desirable properties as a traffic model for OPS performance assessment. Using this model, we determine lower and upper bounds for the packet loss rate (PLR) achieved by the aforementioned switch. The calculation of the PLR bounds through matrix analytical methods is repeated for a wide range of traffic conditions, including highly non-uniform traffic, both in space (i.e., packet destinations) and time (bursty traffic). The quality of these bounds is verified through comparison with simulation results.  相似文献
