We consider the problem of allocating bandwidth fairly to each node in a shared, unidirectional bus network. We focus on the pi persistent protocol, since these are open loop policies designed to operate well in high speed networks, which have a very large bandwidth-delay product and feedback in the upstream direction is not available in a timely manner. First, we introduce an improvement to the basic pi persistent protocol, in which we replace random coin tosses with a deterministic counting algorithm, and thereby reduce the delays for all nodes for any given choice of {pi}. We then describe an exact method for calculating average packet delays and queue lengths in both the pi persistent and our new deterministic n out of m protocols, based on the regenerative approach of Georgiades et al. (1987). These delay results, together with simulation measurements, show that both of these protocols still waste some bandwidth. After presenting a lower bounding argument to show that some wasted bandwidth is inevitable in all such distributed access control schemes, assuming a passive bus without feedback in the upstream direction, we show that changing the bus to unidirectional point-to-point links between (very simple) active interfaces at each node allows us to construct distributed access schemes that require no upstream feedback and are both work conserving and fair. To illustrate how this can be done, we introduce the pi preemptive protocol, in which each node randomly inserts its own packets into the traffic arriving from upstream. We derive a simple and effective heuristic for calculating the preemption probability for each node, and use simulation to show how well it equalizes the delays at each node  相似文献

Intensive use of phosphates has resulted in high P levels in surface waters and therefore eutrophication problems. Over the last decade many studies have revealed the advantage of using specific materials with efficient phosphorus retention capacities. Recent studies state that Ca materials are of particular interest for long-term retention of P, but can induce negative effects. To improve P retention and avoid negative counter-effects we tested the potential of natural apatites. Apatite sorption was evaluated using batch and open reactor experiments. Batch experiments identify sorption mechanisms and the influence of the ionic characteristics of the solution; open reactor experiments evaluate sorption capacities in relation to the ionic composition of the solution and biomass development. In parallel, observation of the material by electron microscopy was used to give more precision information about the mechanisms involved. This work reveals the strong chemical affinity between apatites and phosphorus. Compared to other calcareous materials apatite is better able to maintain low outlet P levels. After more than 550 days feeding, sorption was still present and low P outlet levels were still being obtained when sufficient contact time and calcium content in the solution were ensured. This work demonstrates the advantages of using apatites for phosphorus removal in constructed wetlands. The behaviour of apatite in phosphorus retention is explained and its suitability for use in such extensive systems defined.  相似文献

We present a new dynamic programming algorithm that solves the minimum Steiner tree problem on graphs with k terminals in time O*(ck) for any c > 2. This article shows how large-scale commercial farmers, individually and collectively, are responding to land and water reform processes in the Thukela River basin, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. With a high degree of innovative agency, commercial farmers have effectively executed four strategies, enabling them to adapt and use their access to resources to neutralize multiple water reform efforts that once promised to be catalysts for inclusive change in the post-apartheid era. It is likely that policy alone will not facilitate the envisioned transformation, if local practices are not sufficiently understood and anticipated by the governmental officials charged with the implementation of water reform processes.  相似文献

Recently we have developed a class of media access control algorithms for different types of Local Area Networks. A common feature of these LAN algorithms is that they represent various methods by which the processors in the LAN can simulate the availability of centralized packet transport facility, but whose service incorporates a particular type of changeover time known as ‘moving server’ overhead. First we describe the operation of moving server systems in general, for both First-Come-First-Served and Head-of-the-Line orders of service, together with an approach for their delay analysis where we transform the moving server system into a conventional queueing system having proportional waiting times. Then we describe how the various LAN algorithms may be obtained from the ideal moving server system, and how a major component of their performance characteristics is determined by the performance characteristics of that ideal system. Finally, we evaluate the compatibility of such LAN algorithms with separable queueing network models of distributed systems by computing the interdeparture time distribution for M/M/1 in the presence of moving server overhead. Although it is not exponential except in the limits of low server utilization or low overhead, the interdeparture time distribution is a weighted sum of exponential terms with a coefficient of variation not much smaller than unity. Thus, we conjecture that a service centre with moving server overhead could be used to represent one of these LAN algorithms in a product form queueing network model of a distributed system without introducing significant approximation errors.  相似文献

We present a brief and simple analysis of asynchronous (unslotted) 1-Persistent CSMA protocols in the worst-case star topology. The purpose is two-fold. First, we give a simple approach based on an embedded Markov chain at the beginning of subbusy periods that greatly simplifies the analysis. And second, using the above approach we give the correct analysis for 1-Persistent CSMA with collision detection, since the only available analysis of the present model [1] is in error.  相似文献

ABSTRACT This paper examines the development of disparities between the regions of the European Union over a very long period of time. It does so by reviewing the relevant theoretical, empirical and prospective literature. First, the contributions of the; different schools of thought on regional growth are reviewed. They are inconclusive as to the outcome of the process in terms of convergence or divergence. Next, empirical studies into the differential development of European regions are reviewed, covering the whole period of the industrial revolution to our present time. The resulting picture reveals a considerable diversity of patterns. Over the postwar period, characterized by increased economic integration, a decrease in disparity has been recorded. Poorer regions have used their improved access to the European market and their better opportunities for attracting mobile capital to each up the likely behavior of the regional system of Europe are examined. In the future, new forms of economic integration (deepening like the EMU, and widening with the central European countries) will to a large extent shape the environment for regional developments. All in all, these factors are likely to bring more disparity. Therefore, increased attention should be given to policies that stimulate new ways of mobilizing the diverse potential of the various regions of the enlarged Europe.  相似文献

We developed an original method to measure nitrification rates at different depths of a vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW) with variable contents of organic matter (sludge, colonized gravel). The method was adapted for organic matter sampled in constructed wetland (sludge, colonized gravel) operated under partially saturated conditions and is based on respirometric principles. Measurements were performed on a reactor, containing a mixture of organic matter (sludge, colonized gravel) mixed with a bulking agent (wood), on which an ammonium-containing liquid was applied. The oxygen demand was determined from analysing oxygen concentration of the gas passing through the reactor with an on-line analyzer equipped with a paramagnetic detector. Within this paper we present the overall methodology, the factors influencing the measurement (sample volume, nature and concentration of the applied liquid, number of successive applications), and the robustness of the method. The combination of this new method with a mass balance approach also allowed determining the concentration and maximum growth rate of the autotrophic biomass in different layers of a VFCW. These latter parameters are essential inputs for the VFCW plant modelling.  相似文献

IgE‐mediated allergy to milk and egg is widespread in industrialised countries and mainly affects infants and young children. It may be connected to an incomplete digestion of dietary proteins causing an inappropriate immune response in the gut. In order to study this, a biochemical model of infant gastroduodenal digestion has been developed, which has reduced levels of protease (eightfold for pepsin and tenfold for trypsin and chymotrypsin), phosphatidylcholine and bile salts, compared with the adult model. This model has been used to study the behaviour of three characterised food‐relevant proteins (bovine β‐lactoglobulin (β‐Lg), β‐casein (β‐CN) and hen's egg ovalbumin), all of which are relevant cows' milk and hens' egg allergens. Digestion products were characterised using electrophoresis, immunochemical techniques and MS. These showed that ovalbumin and β‐CN were digested more slowly using the infant model compared with the adult conditions. Resistant fragments of β‐CN were found in the infant model, which correspond to previously identified IgE epitopes. Surprisingly, β‐Lg was more extensively degraded in the infant model compared with the adult one. This difference was attributed to the tenfold reduction in phosphatidylcholine concentration in the infant model limiting the protective effect of this phospholipid on β‐Lg digestion.  相似文献

In this work we demonstrate the nanopatterning of nanocomposites made by luminescent zinc oxide nanoparticles and light‐emitting conjugated polymers by means of soft molding lithography. Vertical nanofluidics is exploited to overcome the polymer transport difficulties intrinsic in materials incorporating nanocrystals, and the rheology, fluorescence, absolute quantum yield, and emission directionality of the nanostructured composites are investigated. We study the effect of patterned gratings on the directionality of light emitted from the nanocomposites, finding evidence of the enhancement of forward emitted light, due to the printed wavelength‐scale periodicity. These results open new possibilities for the realization of nanopatterned devices based on hybrid organic‐inorganic systems.  相似文献
