The European,Japanese and US protective helmet,gloves and boots for firefighters: thermoregulatory and psychological evaluations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the physiological and subjective responses of the European, Japanese (JPN) and US firefighters' helmet, gloves and boots for international standardisation. Three experimental conditions were evaluated (clothing mass: 9.4, 8.2 and 10.1 kg for the three conditions, respectively) at the air temperature of 32°C and 60% relative humidity. The results showed that there was no significant difference among the three conditions in oxygen consumption, heart rate, total sweat rate, rectal temperature and mean skin temperature, whereas peripheral temperatures and subjective perceptions were lower in the JPN condition than in the other conditions (P < 0.05). These results indicate that a 0.5-kg reduction in helmet mass and a 1.1-kg reduction in boot mass during exercise resulted in a significant decrease in head and leg temperatures and subjective perceptions, while a 1.9-kg reduction in total clothing mass had insignificant influences on the metabolic burden and overall body temperature.     

Some properties of equivalence soft set relations

The soft set theory is a new mathematical tool for dealing with uncertainties that is free from the difficulties that have troubled the usual theoretical approaches. Babitha and Sunil [Soft set relations and function, Computers and Mathematics with Applications 60 (2010) 1840–1849] introduced the notion of soft set relations as a soft subset of the Cartesian product of soft sets and discussed many related concepts such as equivalence soft set relations, partitions and functions. In this paper, we further study the equivalence soft set relations and obtain soft analogues of many results concerning ordinary equivalence relations and partitions. Furthermore, we introduce and discuss the transitive closure of a soft set relation and prove that the poset of the equivalence soft set relations on a given soft set is a complete lattice with the least element and greatest element.     

Weighted Homo-Lumo Energy Separations for the Polyene References of Fullerenes with Up to 100 Carbon Atoms

The T value represents the HOMO-LUMO energy separation of a ε-electronic system weighted with the number of conjugated atoms. We found that this value is kept almost constant for the polyene references defined graph-theoretically for isolated-pentagon isomers of fullerenes with up to 100 carbon atoms. on this numerical basis, the T value can safely be considered as a realistic index of kinetic stability or chemical inertness for all fullerenes without abutting pentagons.     

Multielectrode DBR laser diode for wide bandwidth and flat FM response

A flat red-shifted FM response over a 1 GHz bandwidth has been achieved in a newly fabricated three-electrode DBR LD. Since the DBR structure makes it possible to tune the wavelength without distorting the FM characteristics, the LD is suitable for transmitters in optical FDM communications using FSK lightwaves.<>     

High-power 0.98 mu m GaInAs strained quantum well lasers for Er/sup 3+/-doped fibre amplifier

High-power GaInAs strained quantum well lasers with an emission wavelength of 0.98 mu m, suitable for Er/sup 3+/-doped fibre amplifier pumping, have been fabricated. A threshold current of 15 mA and a peak output power as high as 85 mW have been obtained for the ridge waveguide structure with AR/HR facet coating. Highly efficient pumping for the 1.536 mu m signals has been confirmed.<>     

Broad wavelength tuning under single-mode oscillation with a multi-electrode distributed feedback laser

Broad wavelength tuning under single-mode oscillation is achieved for a 1.5 ?m range multi-electrode distributed feedback laser. The lasing wavelength can be tuned electrically, maintaining a stable single-mode oscillation without mode jumping. The tuning has reached over 20 ? under a noticeable condition of constant power (5mW), with a sufficient side-mode suppression ratio over 30 dB.     

GaAs/AlGaAs directional coupler switch with submillimetre device length

A GaAs/AlGaAs directional coupler switch, for the first time with a device length shorter than 1 mm, has been fabricated by utilising the good controllability of molecular beam epitaxy and reactive ion beam etching. The switching voltage is as low as 5V. The extinction ratio is 17dB for a crossover state and 14dB for a straight-through state.     

Palladium‐Catalyzed Hydroxymethylation of Aryl‐ and Heteroarylboronic Acids using Aqueous Formaldehyde

Cyclometallated NHC palladium complexes prepared from palladium(II) acetate [Pd(OAc)₂] and unsymmetrical 1,3‐diarylimidazolinium salts catalyzed the hydroxymethylation of (hetero)arylboronic acids using an excess amount of formalin to afford (hetero)arylmethanols in good to satisfactory yields.

     

Influence of different feeding systems on the growth performance and muscle development of Japanese Black steers

This study investigated the growth performance and gene expression for muscle development between grass hay-fed (GH) and concentrate-fed (CT) steers. Daily gain and energy intake during the fattening period of the GH group were lower than those of the CT group. Analysis of C/EBPα, PPARγ2, myosin heavy chain (MHC), and myostatin gene expressions was performed by real-time PCR. Expressions of C/EBPα and myostatin in semitendinosus and longissimus lumborum (LL) muscles were higher in the CT group than in the GH group at the end of fattening. In LL muscle, MHC expression at the end of fattening was greater in the GH group than in the CT group. These results suggest that regulation of adipogenesis and myogenesis by the expression of genes involved in muscle development might have occurred in the skeletal muscle of the GH group by the feeding of grass hay and/or because of the low energy intakes.
