Performance Evaluation of Packet Mobile Communications through Level Crossing Analysis

In this paper the performance of a packet mobile radio network is studied inthe presence of shadow fading outage intervals.Under quite general assumptions for the medium access protocol,the probability mass function of the sequence of packets that may be lostdue to an outage interval is derived. It is seen that long sequences of lostpackets are likely to occur for typical values of the mobile speed andshadowing correlation parameters.For delay constrained sources, e.g., voice, the analysis is mainly focused atderiving the probability function of the sequence of dropped packetsand the probability of dropping. For data sources, the delay statistic isalso derived. In the latter case, the effect of finite buffer length isaddressed. Simulation is used to verify the accuracy of approximations introduced in the analysis.     

A C/I advantageous satellite system configuration for land mobile applications

A satellite system based on the frequency scanning concept has been recently assessed for L‐band land mobile communications. The study – promototed by ESA/ESTEC for an European application mission – has reached an advanced electrical design phase. The selected configuration is particularly advantageous in terms of Carrier‐to‐Intermodulation ratio (C/I) performance, which constitutes a requirement of key‐importance in the envisaged user applications. The advantage in C/I is due to the proper choice of the on‐board transmitter configuration, which adopts power module pairs where the overall power demand is evenly distributed. The consequent improved C/I is then achievable at both transmitter and radiated far field level. The present paper aims a contribution to the design methodology of frequency scanning satellite systems, by joining two key‐aspects: in fact an analytical approach is proposed to demonstrate the C/I advantage achievable through frequency scanning satellite systems and the methodology is applied to a concrete example, the ESA/ESTEC system, whose feasibility has been fully proved in previous studies. The analysis is performed both at transmitter level and in the far field. The main results achieved are hereinafter presented. Adeno-associated virus 2-mediated high efficiency gene transfer into immature and mature subsets of hematopoietic progenitor cells in human umbilical cord blood

Recombinant adeno-associated virus 2 (AAV) virions were constructed containing a gene for resistance to neomycin (neoR), under the control of either the herpesvirus thymidine kinase (TK) gene promoter (vTK-Neo), or the human parvovirus B19 p6 promoter (vB19-Neo), as well as those containing an upstream erythroid cell-specific enhancer (HS-2) from the locus control region of the human beta-globin gene cluster (vHS2-TK-Neo; vHS2-B19-Neo). These recombinant virions were used to infect either low density or highly enriched populations of CD34+ cells isolated from human umbilical cord blood. In clonogenic assays initiated with cells infected with the different recombinant AAV-Neo virions, equivalent high frequency transduction of the neoR gene into slow-cycling multipotential, erythroid, and granulocyte/macrophage (GM) progenitor cells, including those with high proliferative potential, was obtained without prestimulation with growth factors, indicating that these immature and mature hematopoietic progenitor cells were susceptible to infection by the recombinant AAV virions. Successful transduction did not require and was not enhanced by prestimulation of these cell populations with cytokines. The functional activity of the transduced neo gene was evident by the development of resistance to the drug G418, a neomycin analogue. Individual high and low proliferative colony-forming unit (CFU)-GM, burst-forming unit-erythroid, and CFU-granulocyte erythroid macrophage megakaryocyte colonies from mock-infected, or the recombinant virus-infected cultures were subjected to polymerase chain reaction analysis using a neo-specific synthetic oligonucleotide primer pair. A 276-bp DNA fragment that hybridized with a neo-specific DNA probe on Southern blots was only detected in those colonies cloned from the recombinant virus-infected cells, indicating stable integration of the transduced neo gene. These studies suggest that parvovirus-based vectors may prove to be a useful alternative to the more commonly used retroviral vectors for high efficiency gene transfer into slow or noncycling primitive hematopoietic progenitor cells, without the need for growth factor stimulation, which could potentially lead to differentiation of these cells before transplantation.     

Benign paroxysmal tonic upward gaze syndrome

INTRODUCTION: The benign paroxysmal tonic upward gaze syndrome (BPTUG) is a rare condition. We present two new cases analyzing the clinical, genetic, evolution and therapeutic aspects. CLINICAL CASES: Case 1. A 2 year-old girl with no family history of similar disorders started, at the age of 6 months, to have episodes of upward deviation of gaze with hyperextension of the neck and vertical nystagmus of fixation, increased by nervousness and episodes of fever. Some episodes caused the patient to fall in spite of there being no alteration of consciousness. Case 2. From the age of five months a 1 year-old girl with no significant personal or family history had episodes of ocular deviation upwards with forward inclination of the head to correct her gaze and slow motor development from the age of five months. RESULTS: Complementary studies were normal in both patients. As in the cases described in the literature, our cases had no family history and were not sensitive to Dopa. To date 11 children have been described in the literature and few familial cases seen with dominant autosomal inheritance. CONCLUSIONS: Our patients had a non-epileptic paroxystic phenomenon known as BPTUG syndrome. This condition starts during the first year of life, has a benign course and the episodes have ceased by the age of four years. We believe it is important to consider the differential diagnosis with epileptic phenomena, evaluate the response to L-Dopa and bear in mind that this syndrome may be the clinical expression of several different conditions. Although the course is usually benign, it may later be associated with other signs of neurological problems which should be taken into account.
