In this work we introduce a novel metric for characterizing the double-directional propagation environment and use this metric to assess the performance of a SAGE parameter estimator for MIMO channels. Using the IlmProp, a geometry-based MIMO channel modeling tool, we construct synthetic channels for three different scenarios showing: (i) well separated clusters containing dense propagation paths, and single-bounce scattering; (ii) partly overlapping clusters containing widely spread propagation paths, and single-bounce scattering; (iii) unclustered multipath components (“rich scattering”), and double-bounce-only scattering. We model the scatterers and the receiver in the environment as fixed, but the transmitter as moving. The Initialization and Search-Improved SAGE (ISIS) estimation tool is used to extract the propagation paths from the constructed channels. Both true and estimated paths are fed to the new system-independent metric which genuinely reflects the structure of the channel and the compactness of the propagation paths. We use this metric to decide on the accuracy of the channel estimator. The results show a convincing agreement between true and estimated paths.  相似文献

An ultrasonic reflection-mode CT method was applied to transskull imaging of brain. The method involves only a single transducer and a single scan to acquire data from the object. In reconstruction an ordinary Fourier slice theorem is applied. The average velocity changes of ultrasound due to the skullbone can be compensated. In experiments the object immersed in water was scanned by a wide-angle transducer through the viewing angle of 360 degrees. When imaging through bone a simplified approach was employed in which a piece of skullbone (thickness 3-4 mm) was attached firmly to the transducer. For comparison, the same object was then imaged without the skullbone. A two-point resolution better than 3 mm was achieved for transskull imaging using 1 MHz ultrasound. The experiments with brain specimens show that transskull images compare well with the images of the same specimens obtained without the bone interference. The findings are clinically significant in terms of pediatric brain diagnosis and postoperative follow up. Based on the method, a clinical prototype imager is currently being developed especially for diagnosis of children's brain diseases.  相似文献

A short period of ischemia followed by reperfusion produces a state of affairs in which the cells' potential for surviving longer ischemia is enhanced. This is called ischemic preconditioning. The effects of preconditioning are also related to the reperfusion damage which ensues upon tissue oxygenation. The role of the cellular energy state in reperfusion damage remains an enigma, although ischemic preconditioning is known to trigger mechanisms which contribute to the prevention of unnecessary ATP waste. In some species up to 80% of ATP hydrolysis in ischemia can be attributed to mitochondrial F1-F0-ATPase (ATP synthase), and a role for its inhibitor protein (IF1) in ATP preservation has been proposed. Although originally regarded as limited to large animals with a slow heart beat, inhibition by IF1 is probably a universal phenomenon. Coincidentally with ATPase inhibition, the decline in cellular ATP slows down, but even so the difference in ATP concentration between preconditioned and non-conditioned hearts is still small at the final stages of a long ischemia, when the beneficial effect of preconditioning is observable, although the energy state during reperfusion remains low in hearts which do not recover.  相似文献

The problem of identifying clusters from MIMO measurement data is addressed. Conventionally, visual inspection has been used for cluster identification, but this approach is impractical for a large amount of measurement data. For automatic clustering, the multipath component distance (MCD) is used to calculate the distance between individual multipath components estimated by a channel parameter estimator, such as SAGE. This distance is implemented in the well-known KMeans clustering algorithm. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the choice made, the performance of the MCD and the Euclidean distance were compared by clustering synthetic data generated by the 3GPP spatial channel model (SCM). An ultrasound synthetic aperture imaging method based on a monostatic approach was studied experimentally. The proposed synthetic aperture method offers good dynamical resolution along with fast numerical reconstruction. In this study complex object data were recorded coherently in a two-dimensional hologram using a 3.5 MHz single transducer with a fairly wide-angle beam. Image reconstruction which applies the wavefront backward propagation method and the near-field curvature compensation was performed numerically in a microcomputer using the spatial frequency domain. This approach allows an efficient use of the FFT-algorithms. Because of the simple and fast scanning scheme and the efficient reconstruction algorithms the method can be made real-time. The image quality of the proposed method was studied by evaluating the spatial and dynamical resolution in a waterbath and in a typical tissue-mimicking phantom. The lateral as well as the range resolution (-6 dB) were approximately 1 mm in the depth range of 30-100 mm. The dynamical resolution could be improved considerably when the beam width was made narrower. Although it resulted in a slightly reduced spatial resolution this compromise has to be done for better resolution of low-contrast targets such as cysts. The localization and duration of developmental stages of Eimeria colchici and Eimeria duodenalis were studied histologically. The prepatent period of the most pathogenic species from the caeca of pheasants--Eimeria colchici--was 6 days. The patent period began on the 7th day and finished on the 11th day post-infection with the maximum production of oocysts on days 8-9. In the case of Eimeria duodenalis the prepatent period was shorter--4 days, and the duration of the patent period was 3-4 days without a significant increase in oocyst production.  相似文献

California sea lions have high levels of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in their blubber. Animals affected by domoic acid fast and refeed during their rehabilitation. We studied the effect of decreases in total body mass (16 +/- 7% of initial body mass) on blubber POP contaminant concentrations and estimated POP burdens during fasting (12 +/- 5 days) in 19 California sea lions. The effect of refeeding (92 +/- 8% of initial body mass) was also investigated. Significant increases in the concentration of all POPs were found over the mass loss period and decreases during mass gain. A basic mass balance model indicated that the changes did not conform to a simple concentrating and diluting pattern and a proportion of the contaminants were lost from the lipid pool. During mass loss, the lower chlorinated polychlorinated biphenyl congeners, chlordanes, and hexachlorocyclohexanes were lost at a higher rate than the other contaminant classes (particularly polybrominated diphenyl ethers). During mass gain the behavior of all contaminant classes was more consistent with the dilution model. These results indicate the importance of considering the energetic contextwhen sampling blubberfor long-term contaminant monitoring and suggest an initial approach to adjust for such differences.  相似文献

Certain populations of killer whales (Orcinus orca) have been extensively studied over the past 30 years, including populations that use Puget Sound, WA, the inside waters of British Columbia, Southeastern Alaska and Kenai Fjords/Prince William Sound, Alaska. Two eco-types of killer whales, 'transient' and 'resident', occur in all of these regions. These eco-types are genetically distinct and differ in various aspects of morphology, vocalization patterns, diet and habitat use. Various genetic and photo-identification studies of eastern North Pacific killer whales have provided information on the male-female composition of most of these resident pods and transient groups, as well as the approximate ages, reproductive status and putative recruitment order (birth order) of the individual whales. Biopsy blubber samples of free-ranging resident and transient killer whales from the Kenai Fjords/Prince William Sound, AK region were acquired during the 1994-1999 field seasons and analyzed for selected organochlorines (OCs), including dioxin-like CB congeners and DDTs. Concentrations of OCs in transient killer whales (marine mammal-eating) were much higher than those found in resident animals (fish-eating) apparently due to differences in diets of these two killer whale eco-types. Certain life-history parameters such as sex, age and reproductive status also influenced the concentrations of OCs in the Alaskan killer whales. Reproductive female whales contained much lower levels of OCs than sexually immature whales or mature male animals in the same age class likely due to transfer of OCs from the female to her offspring during gestation and lactation. Recruitment order also influenced the concentrations of OCs in the Alaskan killer whales. In adult male residents, first-recruited whales contained much higher OC concentrations than those measured in non-first-recruited (e.g. second recruited, third recruited) resident animals in the same age group. This study provides baseline OC data for free ranging Alaskan killer whales for which there is little contaminant information.  相似文献

An ultrasound holographic B-scan (UHB) imaging apparatus comprising a minicomputer system, a data acquisition unit, and a special 64-element UHB transducer has been developed. Simulation studies and real experiments with a tissue-equivalent phantom show that lateral and longitudinal resolution (-6 dB) of about 1 mm was achieved in the entire image. Furthermore, results from clinical evaluation, including diagnostic and neurosurgical imaging, suggest that the UHB imaging method is operational and has some special advantages in patient diagnosis. Theoretically, the addition of phase information to the ultrasound images can result in enhanced tissue characterization, which is extremely important in tumor diagnosis and treatment.  相似文献
