On the number of Dejean words over alphabets of 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 letters

We give lower bounds on the growth rate of Dejean words, i.e. minimally repetitive words, over a k-letter alphabet, for 5≤k≤10. Put together with the known upper bounds, we estimate these growth rates with the precision of 0.005. As a consequence, we establish the exponential growth of the number of Dejean words over a k-letter alphabet, for 5≤k≤10.     

Complexity of solving the Subset Sum problem with the branch-and-bound method with domination and cardinality filtering

We obtain an exact upper bound on the complexity of solving the Subset Sum problem with a variation of the branch-and-bound method of a special form. Complexity is defined as the number of subproblems considered in the process of solving the original problem. Here we reduce the enumeration by using the domination relation. We construct an instance of the Subset Sum problem on which our bound is realized. The resulting bound is asymptotically twice smaller than the exact upper bound on the complexity of solving this problem with a standard version of the branch-and-bound method.     

Metering component for continuous casting of aluminum-deoxided steel

Conclusions Scale growth in the channel of the metering component during the pouring of steel deoxidized by 2.2–2.5 kg/ton of aluminum is influenced by: the amount and composition of the nonmetal impurities; the material and construction of the component; and the method of supplying the metal to the ingot mold. Stable steel pouring is secured by using a fireclay (36% Al₂O₃) metering component with widened channel (depth 55 mm), and with full protection against secondary oxidation for the metal stream.Translated from Ogneupory, No. 8, pp. 34–37, August, 1969.     

A Control System of the Heavy Ion Synchrotron in the Project of the Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility

Some problems of designing a control system of the heavy ion synchrotron in the project of the heavy ion acceleration facility are considered. The system includes approximately 200 dynamics and 1070 static inputs, and measures beam profiles in 1500 and control 176 points. Information flows have been calculated, organization of the control system of HIS and evaluation of its reliability have been made. The distribution control principle is used. The main structure unit is a microcomputer coupled to a CAMAC crate. The control system contains in total 5 computers, 17 microcomputers and 32 crates.     

Estimating the computational complexity of one variant of parallel realization of the branch-and-bound method for the knapsack problem

One of the possible realizations of the branch-and-bound method on multiprocessor systems with distributed memory, the front-end algorithm is addressed. The complexity of the front-end algorithm is studied for a family of Boolean knapsack problems with one constraint under the assumption that the number of processors is not limited. Formulas for the order of complexity growth with an increase in dimension of the problems from the addressed family are obtained for the front-end algorithm. The asymptotic acceleration behavior and efficiency of resource use with an increase in the number of variables are studied.
