Structuring fault-tolerant object systems for modularity in adistributed environment

The object-oriented approach to system structuring has found widespread acceptance among designers and developers of robust computing systems. The authors propose a system structure for distributed programming systems that support persistent objects and describe how properties such as persistence and recoverability can be implemented. The proposed structure is modular, permitting easy exploitation of any distributed computing facilities provided by the underlying system. An existing system constructed according to the principles espoused here is examined to illustrate the practical utility of the proposed approach to system structuring     

Adaptive Spatial Partitioning for Multidimensional Data Streams

We propose a space-efficient scheme for summarizing multidimensional data streams. Our sketch can be used to solve spatial versions of several classical data stream queries efficiently. For instance, we can track ε-hot spots, which are congruent boxes containing at least an ε fraction of the stream, and maintain hierarchical heavy hitters in d dimensions. Our sketch can also be viewed as a multidimensional generalization of the ε-approximate quantile summary. The space complexity of our scheme is O((1/ε) log R) if the points lie in the domain [0, R]^d, where d is assumed to be a constant. The scheme extends to the sliding window model with a log (ε n) factor increase in space, where n is the size of the sliding window. Our sketch can also be used to answer ε-approximate rectangular range queries over a stream of d-dimensional points.     

A randomized voltage vector switching scheme for three-level powerinverters

In this paper, a feasibility study of a randomized space vector switching scheme for three-level inverters is reported. Based on the traditional space vector concept for pulse width modulation (PWM) inverters, the sequence of the space vector is randomized in this scheme. The overall vector, resulting from the randomization, is mathematically identical to that of the traditional space vector. It has been found that the randomized scheme can effectively spread the switching noise over a wide frequency range and at the same time keep the steady-state link capacitor voltage balanced. The proposed scheme has been implemented in real time in a digital controller and its features have been experimentally confirmed     

A unique method for reducing losses of bends in dielectric optical wave guide

The dielectric optical wave guide is finding growing attention at millimeter wave frequencies. However the dielectric optical waveguide radiates at bends and thus transmission loss increases. These radiations are in the outword direction of bends. This output radiation at output bends arises due to change in phase velocities of the propagating wave at the centre of the dielectric guide and the phase velocity at the outer surface of the dielectric guide. A unique methiod is suggested to avoid these radiation losses.Experimental results are also shown at microwave frequencies.     

Clinical course of isolated ventricular septal defect: an Indian experience

To define the clinical course of ventricular septal defect, 410 consecutive patients with isolated ventricular septal defect were evaluated over a period of 13 years. Their age ranged from 12 days to 24 years at the time of first visit to the hospital. Patients with less than 2 years follow-up period were excluded. One hundred and fifty seven patients were one year of age or less. The left to right shunt size remained the same in 52.4% of cases. In 34.4% the shunt size decreased, with complete closure of ventricular septal defect in 8.8%. Closure of ventricular septal defect was observed even in patients who had initially presented with large left to right flow, and congestive heart failure in infancy. Right ventricular outflow tract obstruction developed in 8.5% of patients usually between 2 and 10 years of age. Murmur of aortic regurgitation appeared in 8.9% on follow-up. Infective endocarditis developed in 6 cases. The unfortunate complication of Eisemenger's complex was seen in 3 patients; they had not returned for follow up for a long period of time. Hence, our data show that the left to right shunt across the ventricular septal defect decreases in about one-third of patients. However, a regular follow up is essential to prevent development of Eisenmenger's complex and for early detection of other complications like aortic regurgitation and right ventricular outflow tract obstruction.     

Swelling kinetics of a hydrogel of poly(ethylene glycol) and poly(acrylamide‐co‐styrene)

A hydrogel incorporating the hydrophilic polymer poly(ethylene glycol) and a copolymer of acrylamide and styrene was synthesized, and the dynamics of the water‐sorption process were studied. The effects of the composition of the hydrogel and the temperature of the swelling medium were investigated with respect to the water‐sorption characteristics of the hydrogel, and the kinetic parameters, including the swelling exponent and diffusion constant, were evaluated. The hydrogel was also judged for the antithrombogenic property of its surface. The experimental findings were explained on the basis of the core–shell polymeric structure of the hydrogel. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 85: 1419–1428, 2002
