Paper recommender systems in the e-learning domain must consider pedagogical factors, such as a paper's overall popularity and learner background knowledge — factors that are less important in commercial book or movie recommender systems. This article reports evaluations of a 6D paper recommender. Experimental results from a human subject study of learner preferences suggest that pedagogical factors help to overcome a serious cold-start problem (not having enough papers or learners to start the recommender system) and help the system more appropriately support users as they learn.  相似文献

Organic waste generated from industrial sweet potato canning is estimated to be 30% of incoming raw material with significant residual carbohydrate content. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential of waste generated from sweet potato processing material to support the growth of lactic acid bacteria and the production of lactic acid. The waste was comprised of 16.5% solids consisting of 18.5% ash, 4.4% protein, 20.5% simple sugars and 19% soluble starch. Following a screening of three lactic acid bacteria strains, Lactobacillus rhamnosus was deemed the best candidate for lactic acid production. The potential of various dilutions of the enzyme‐hydrolysed waste, with and without pH control, as a fermentation substrate was evaluated. Lactic acid production was highest in hydrolysed waste (without dilution) at pH set point 5.0, yielding 10 g L?1 in 72 h. Thus, lactic acid, a valuable organic compound, can be generated from sweet potato waste.  相似文献

Coral reefs are in global decline, with seaweeds increasing as corals decrease. Although seaweeds inhibit coral growth, recruitment, and survivorship, the mechanism of these interactions is poorly understood. Here, we used field experiments to show that contact with four common seaweeds induces bleaching on natural colonies of Porites rus. Controls in contact with inert, plastic mimics of seaweeds did not bleach, suggesting seaweed effects resulted from allelopathy rather than shading, abrasion, or physical contact. Bioassay-guided fractionation of the hydrophobic extract from the red alga Phacelocarpus neurymenioides revealed a previously characterized antibacterial metabolite, neurymenolide A, as the main allelopathic agent. For allelopathy of lipid-soluble metabolites to be effective, the compounds would need to be deployed on algal surfaces where they could transfer to corals on contact. We used desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (DESI-MS) to visualize and quantify neurymenolide A on the surface of P. neurymenioides, and we found the molecule on all surfaces analyzed, with highest concentrations on basal portions of blades.  相似文献

Three microparticle additives, tungsten (W), zirconium oxide (ZrO2) , and barium sulfate (BaSO4) were selected to enhance the radio‐opacity in shape memory polymer (SMP) foam biomaterials. The addition of filler causes no significant alterations of glass transition temperatures, density of the materials increases, pore diameter decreases, and total volume recovery decreases from approximately 70 times in unfilled foams to 20 times (4% W and 10% ZrO2). The addition of W increases time to recovery; ZrO2 causes little variation in time to shape recovery; BaSO4 increases the time to recovery. On a 2.00 mean X‐ray density (mean X.D.) scale, a GDC coil standard has a mean X.D. of 0.62 ; 4% W enhances the mean X.D. to 1.89, 10% ZrO2 to 1.39 and 4% BaSO4 to 0.74. Radio‐opacity enhancing additives could be used to produce SMP foams with controlled shape memory kinetics, low density , and enhanced X ‐ray opacity for medical materials. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. BACKGROUND: In this study the effects of ampicillin and aqueous garlic extract on Escherichia coli (ATCC 9637) and Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) were compared. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to study the possible mechanisms of membrane disruption. RESULTS: Ampicillin disrupted the cell membrane of E. coli, inducing pores and cell leakage. Aqueous garlic extract also induced leakage from the cell membrane in E. coli, but no pores were observed. The trend in Young's modulus for E. coli was EnativeEage > Eamp. In contrast, S. aureus incubated with low ampicillin (≤50µg mL?1) and garlic (≤50 mg mL?1) concentrations showed no significant changes in surface morphology compared with the untreated bacterium. The trend in Young's modulus for S. aureus was EnativeEageEamp. CONCLUSION: The trend EnativeEage for E. coli and S. aureus supports the hypothesis that the compounds in garlic show intracellular activity. This proof‐of‐concept study of the aqueous crude isolate of garlic points to the feasibility of further AFM investigations to compare the antimicrobial properties of various pure thiosulfinate isolates found in garlic. Animal behaviour arises through a complex mixture of biomechanical, neuronal, sensory and control constraints. By focusing on a simple, stereotyped movement, the prey capture strike of a weakly electric fish, we show that the trajectory of a strike is one which minimizes effort. Specifically, we model the fish as a rigid ellipsoid moving through a fluid with no viscosity, governed by Kirchhoff's equations. This formulation allows us to exploit methods of discrete mechanics and optimal control to compute idealized fish trajectories that minimize a cost function. We compare these with the measured prey capture strikes of weakly electric fish from a previous study. The fish has certain movement limitations that are not incorporated in the mathematical model, such as not being able to move sideways. Nonetheless, we show quantitatively that the computed least-cost trajectories are remarkably similar to the measured trajectories. Since, in this simplified model, the basic geometry of the idealized fish determines the favourable modes of movement, this suggests a high degree of influence between body shape and movement capability. Simplified minimal models and optimization methods can give significant insight into how body morphology and movement capability are closely attuned in fish locomotion.  相似文献

Laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectra of three thermally labile low molecular weight organoselenium compounds (selenomethionine, selenoethionine, trimethylselenonium iodide) in human urine matrix have been obtained by using surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI-MS). Four active layers, active carbon, silica sol-gel, and silica sol-gel impregnated with crown ether and with active carbon, were deposited on three different support substrates: (i) microscope slide coverslips; (ii) Al foil; and (iii) Cu tapes. Primarily protonated molecular ions and alkali metal adducts were observed in the mass spectra. A mixed-silica sol-gel and active carbon substrate active layer gave the best signal response for all compounds. Sol-gel substrates offered very clean backgrounds compared to the pure active carbon layers; however, the mass spectral signal intensities acquired were substantially lower for the sol-gel surfaces than those of the pure active carbon under the same conditions. Cu tape and Al foil support materials gave strong mass spectra of molecular ions and alkali metal molecular ion adducts, with lower Na and K adducts found with the Cu tape than with Al foil. Glass coverslips gave no response under all experimental conditions examined. Aerosol deposition was used to prepare SALDI substrates to avoid the localized "sweet spot" phenomenon encountered in conventional SALDI substrate preparation. Various nebulizers were examined and found to be effective in producing SALDI films with controlled and reproducible thicknesses. We were able to obtain exact mass identification of all three selenium species by high-resolution TOF-MS. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time low molecular weight organoselenium compounds have been identified by SALDI-high-resolution TOF-MS.  相似文献

Human disease elicits a complex array of biological processes that results in long‐term protective immunological memory to infectious agents. Chronic kidney disease is known to impair induction of sustained immunological memory to hepatitis B vaccine (HBVax) antigens. We asked the question: Does end‐stage renal disease promote changes in subtypes of regulatory T (Treg) cells that correlate with diminished amnestic response to HBVax antigen compared to healthy controls? The study design and setting was a prospective observational cohort at a veterans affairs medical center. End‐stage renal disease patients on hemodialysis (HD) were compared with individuals with self‐reported normal kidney function. All subjects received HBVax. Peripheral blood was sampled for assessment for Treg cells pre and post vaccination. CD4+ FOXP3 Treg numbers were similar between HD and healthy subjects during a 14‐day time period post vaccination. HD subjcts had lower anti‐HBSag antibody than CON (control) subjects (330 ± 108.7 vs. 663.1 ± 129.7 IU/mL; P = 0.063). Hemodialysis subjects with resting Tregs higher than the median value in our cohort demonstrated a significantly lower change in HBsAB at 30 days post booster vaccination (P = 0.030). No such relationship was found for the activated Treg subset among HD subjects, or either subset among CON subsets. In our limited comparison study of 11 HD and 8 CON subjects, Treg subsets did not differ between the two groups; but differences in the suppressive Treg numbers in the HD group could explain the altered antibody response to HBVax and is worthy of further study.  相似文献

Early initiation of cigarette use is associated with higher levels of nicotine dependence. This paper provides a theory to explain this finding based on the neurotoxic effects of cigarettes on a developing system. The tobacco-induced neurotoxicity of adolescent cognitive development (TINACD) theory postulates that alterations in executive functioning, particularly evident under stressful or emotionally intense states, lead to higher levels of dependence. The model proposes that the neurotoxic effects of tobacco are most pronounced when smoking begins during early adolescence, a period of major neurodevelopment subserving inhibitory control.  相似文献

Behavior-state matching and synchrony in interactions were assessed in 48 depressed and nondepressed mother–infant dyads when the infants were 3 months old. Attentive/affective behavior states were coded for the infants and mothers on a negative to positive scale. The depressed mothers and their infants matched negative behavior states more often and positive behavior states less often than did the nondepressed dyads. The total percentage of time spent in matching behavior states was less for the depressed than for the nondepressed dyads. Cross-spectral analyses of the mothers' and the infants' behavior-state time series suggested only a trend for greater coherence or synchrony in the interactions of the nondepressed dyads.
