Computational models of periodic- and aperiodic-pattern selective cells, also called grating and bar cells, respectively, are proposed. Grating cells are found in areas V1 and V2 of the visual cortex of monkeys and respond strongly to bar gratings of a given orientation and periodicity but very weakly or not at all to single bars. This non-linear behaviour, which is quite different from the spatial frequency filtering behaviour exhibited by the other types of orientation-selective neurons such as the simple cells, is incorporated in the proposed computational model by using an AND-type non-linearity to combine the responses of simple cells with symmetric receptive field profiles and opposite polarities. The functional behaviour of bar cells, which are found in the same areas of the visual cortex as grating cells, is less well explored and documented in the literature. In general, these cells respond to single bars and their responses decrease when further bars are added to form a periodic pattern. These properties of bar cells are implemented in a computational model in which the responses of bar cells are computed as thresholded differences of the responses of corresponding complex (or simple) cells and grating cells. Bar and grating cells seem to play complementary roles in resolving the ambiguity with which the responses of simple and complex cells represent oriented visual stimuli, in that bar cells are selective only for form information as present in contours and grating cells only respond to oriented texture information. The proposed model is capable of explaining the results of neurophysiological experiments as well as the psychophysical observation that the perception of texture and the perception of form are complementary processes.  相似文献

The recent novel temperature-modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TA Instruments MDSCTM) technique has been applied to the measurement of thermal properties of GexAsyS60 chalcogenide glasses in the glass transition region in bulk glasses and in their thin films. The reversing and non-reversing heat flows through the glass transformation region during both heating and cooling schedules were measured and the values of the parameters, Tg, ΔH, Cp and ΔCp, which characterize the thermal events in the glass transition region, were determined. The structurally determined parameters, Tg, ΔH, Cp and ΔCp, reveal significant changes with composition because in the GexAsyS60 glasses the average coordination number, 〈r〉, increases from 2.4 to 2.8 with increasing x from 0 to 40 at% Ge. A maximum in Tg, ΔH and Cp and a minimum in the heat capacity change, ΔCp, at Tg occur near the composition for which x≈30 at% Ge. These extrema which appear in both films and bulk glasses are ascribed to a change in the network function of Ge atoms replacing As atoms in a covalent network. Recent structural models for chalcogenide glasses have been considered to explain the observed thermal properties. Summary The weight function method (WFM) has been used recently as a reliable tool for evaluation of fracture mechanics parameters, where cracks are represented by zero opening traction free surfaces. The purpose of this paper is to extend this technique to general opening corner problem. The two dimensional singular fields for displacements and stresses are introduced in terms of generalized Bueckner's strength. By means of eigenvalue analysis the stress intensity factors (SIF) are then formulated after appropriate splitting the regular stress and displacement fields into symmetric and antisymmetric modes. Using Betti's reciprocal theorem, a new expression in a more general closed form is derived for Bueckner's strength consisten with the given nonzero opening case. The potentiality of the method is demonstrated by a numerical example for =/2 corner problem. The stress intensity factor for the symmetric mode is evaluated by WFM and by a simple collocation procedure using both boundary element (BE) and finite element (FE) discretization.  相似文献

The paper presents the design and experimental evaluation of two alternative μ-controllers for robust vertical stabilisation of a two-wheeled self-balancing robot. The controllers design is based on models derived by identification from closed-loop experimental data. In the first design, a signal-based uncertainty representation obtained directly from the identification procedure is used, which leads to a controller of order 29. In the second design the signal uncertainty is approximated by an input multiplicative uncertainty, which leads to a controller of order 50, subsequently reduced to 30. The performance of the two μ-controllers is compared with the performance of a conventional linear quadratic controller with 17th-order Kalman filter. A proportional-integral controller of the rotational motion around the vertical axis is implemented as well. The control code is generated using Simulink® controller models and is embedded in a digital signal processor. Results from the simulation of the closed-loop system as well as experimental results obtained during the real-time implementation of the designed controllers are given. The theoretical investigation and experimental results confirm that the closed-loop system achieves robust performance in respect to the uncertainties related to the identified robot model.  相似文献

We present an overview of various edge and line oriented approaches to contour detection that have been proposed in the last two decades. By edge and line oriented we mean methods that do not rely on segmentation. Distinction is made between edges and contours. Contour detectors are divided in local and global operators. The former are mainly based on differential analysis, statistical approaches, phase congruency, rank order filters, and combinations thereof. The latter include computation of contour saliency, perceptual grouping, relaxation labeling and active contours. Important aspects are covered, such as preprocessing aimed to suppress texture and noise, multiresolution techniques, connections between computational models and properties of the human visual system, and use of shape priors. An overview of procedures and metrics for quantitative performance evaluation is also presented. Our main conclusion is that contour detection has reached high degree of sophistication, taking into account multimodal contour definition (by luminance, color or texture changes), mechanisms for reducing the contour masking influence of noise and texture, perceptual grouping, multiscale aspects and high-level vision information.  相似文献

Analysis of second-order electromechanical sigma-delta (/spl Sigma//spl Delta/) inertial sensors shows that in-band quantization error introduces a resolution penalty, which cannot be eliminated by oversampling. In addition, a tradeoff between resolution and phase compensation forces such systems to operate with reduced phase margin. This paper introduces high-order electromechanical /spl Sigma//spl Delta/ modulation as an approach, which eliminates the quantization noise overhead and allows for increased phase compensation without degrading the resolution. Quasi-linear analysis is used to evaluate the contribution of the individual noise sources to the output of the system and to examine the effect of noise interaction on the behavior of electromechanical /spl Sigma//spl Delta/ modulators.  相似文献

Nowadays, the stability and the safe cover and closure of soft tailings has become one of the most challenging topics in geotechnical and environmental engineering. For appropriate analysis and modelling, geotechnical properties of tailings should be well defined. Due to low strength, viscous nature and poor trafficability, as well as due to the specific geometrical properties of fine particles and pore water chemistry in tailings, different test methods and their modification and improvements must be used for valid and reliable characterisation of tailings. This paper analyses and compares the results of different field test methods, piezocone penetration test (CPTu), flat dilatometer test (DMT) and field vane test (FVT), performed on the red gypsum sludge and complementary laboratory tests. CPTu and DMT measurements were evaluated using procedures developed for soils and the obtained mechanical properties were compared with those measured in the laboratory. The significant distinctions between different test methods and different empirical correlations were analysed taking into account differences in index properties of soils and the red gypsum sludge. Based on analysis, some modifications of conventional empirical correlations were proposed for field tests results interpretation and sludge characterisation. The obtained data also show the advantages and limitations of some conventional methods and prove the need for further development in that field of geotechnical investigation.
