OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of a newly developed individualised birthweight ratio (IBR), which corrects for physiological birthweight determinants, in identifying infants at risk from the complications of macrosomia. DESIGN: Prospective observational study. SETTING: Obstetric unit, Nottingham City Hospital. SUBJECTS: 2835 women delivered between December 1991 and July 1992 and the infants of 624 of these, selected by virtue of their birthweight for gestation and IBR centile positions. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Skinfold thickness and ponderal index measurements, operative delivery, shoulder dystocia, fetal trauma, impaired glucose tolerance. RESULTS: Using an IBR above the 90th centile as a cut off results in 2.4% of infants being reclassified as normally grown and 3.1% are reclassified as large. The IBR does not result in the identification of any more infants with abnormal ponderal indices or skinfold thicknesses than birthweight for gestation. It does, however, identify more of the infants at risk of operative delivery, shoulder dystocia, fetal trauma and impaired glucose tolerance. CONCLUSION: The IBR significantly improves upon birthweight for gestation in identifying infants who suffer from the complications of relative macrosomia.  相似文献

The synthetic growth promoter diethylstilboestrol (DES) administered orally to pigs can be detected by radioimmunoassay (RIA) analysis of kidney, liver, faeces, bile and urine from animals fed continuously to slaughter, but not in muscle, fat or plasma. If treated animals are fed on material not containing DES for 72 h prior to slaughter, then the levels of parent compound and metabolite in all products decrease to become not significantly greater than those in control animals. The gross metabolism of DES in pigs and bovines appears to be similar.  相似文献

Unorganized traffic is a generalized form of travel wherein vehicles do not adhere to any predefined lanes and can travel in-between lanes. Such travel is visible in a number of countries e.g. India, wherein it enables a higher traffic bandwidth, more overtaking and more efficient travel. These advantages are visible when the vehicles vary considerably in size and speed, in the absence of which the predefined lanes are near-optimal. Motion planning for multiple autonomous vehicles in unorganized traffic deals with deciding on the manner in which every vehicle travels, ensuring no collision either with each other or with static obstacles. In this paper the notion of predefined lanes is generalized to model unorganized travel for the purpose of planning vehicles travel. A uniform cost search is used for finding the optimal motion strategy of a vehicle, amidst the known travel plans of the other vehicles. The aim is to maximize the separation between the vehicles and static obstacles. The search is responsible for defining an optimal lane distribution among vehicles in the planning scenario. Clothoid curves are used for maintaining a lane or changing lanes. Experiments are performed by simulation over a set of challenging scenarios with a complex grid of obstacles. Additionally behaviours of overtaking, waiting for a vehicle to cross and following another vehicle are exhibited.  相似文献

Alumina composites reinforced with 20 vol% SiC whiskers were exposed to applied stresses in four-point flexure at temperatures of 1000°, 1100°, and 1200°C in air for periods of up to 14 weeks. At 1000° and 1100°C, an "apparent" fatigue limit was established at stresses of ∼ 75% of the fast fracture strength. However, after long-term (>6 weeks) tests at 1100°C, some evidence of crack generation as a result of creep cavitation was detected. At 1200°C applied stresses as low as 38% of the 1200°C fracture strength were sufficient to promote creep deformation and accompanying cavitation and crack generation and growth resulting in failures in times of <250 h.  相似文献

Concerns regarding the possible environmental effects of organochlorine by‐products from bleaching of pulp with chlorine‐based compounds have led to the pulp and paper industry developing new bleaching sequences. Ozone, oxygen and hydrogen peroxide are the main reagents in these Totally Chlorine Free (TCF) bleaching processes.

In this study, eucalypt kraft pulps from a variety of Australian wood sources were subjected to bleaching sequences comprising oxygen, ozone and hydrogen peroxide/alkali extraction stages. The aqueous liquid effluents from each stage were analyzed by GC/MS for aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, carboxylic acids and other by‐products. Pentafluorobenzyl oxime derivatives of the aldehydes and ketones were analyzed by electron impact GC/MS. The major carbonyl compounds detected were formaldehyde, glyoxal, dimethylglyoxal and acetone. An homologous series of n‐aldehydes corresponding to cleavage of ω‐3, 6, 9 and 12 unsaturated fatty acids also was detected. Aromatic aldehydes were identified in the oxygen stage and high consistency ozone stages, but not in any medium consistency ozone or post‐ozone bleach stages. In all stages a series of saturated alkyl carboxylic acids from formic to octacosanoic acid was detected. Formic and acetic acids were present in the highest yield. Only trace quantities of unsaturated fatty acids were detected. Details of these and other compounds detected are discussed.  相似文献

The use of a microfluidic device in determining the extraction kinetics of CoII ions by di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (DEHPA) was demonstrated. Experimental data obtained using a Y-Y-shaped microchannel were modelled using a finite volume method. The contributions of diffusion and reaction transport resistances to the overall rate of mass transfer were obtained. A diffusion-controlled transfer assumption could not account for the experimental data, confirming that transport occurs under a mixed reaction–diffusion resistance regime. The reaction rate constant was determined to be $(2.4 \pm 0.6) \times 10^{-10}$  m/s, in good agreement with corresponding Lewis cell measurements from the literature.  相似文献
