The design of controlled-resistance loads for domestic induction heating applications using thin non-magnetic conductive layers is described. Thin metallic layers are fabricated using the phase vapour deposition technique. Such layers would enable vessels, the inductive behaviour of which was similar to those fabricated with conventional ferromagnetic bulk materials, to be manufactured. Responds to commentary by I. Silverman (see record 2007-08963-001) entitled "Review of Pure types are rare": Comment on book review. I do not think that either one of us will change his position, and therefore it is up to the interested (yet disinterested) reader to adjudicate our dispute by checking Professor Silverman's book and his references. In the process, the reader will be forced to consider the thought-provoking implications for our mental health system of some of the incidents which the author describes so vividly, and that will not be a bad thing. There is one point, however, which is worth pursuing further here, for Professor Silverman persists in an elementary statistical fallacy. Let us take the situation which he cites, where the base rate for diagnosing schizophrenia is 50%. Suppose with the same base rate the degree of agreement is in fact 53%; this is far above chance level. It must be emphasized, however, that the 53% agreement under discussion came not from a study where the base rate for diagnosing schizophrenia was 50%, but from one where the conditions were far more stringent since the base rate for diagnosing schizophrenia was around 20%. Loss of genetic material, including loss of loci on chromosome arms 6q, 9p, and 10q, occurs frequently in cutaneous melanoma but infrequently in benign melanocytic nevi or other melanocytic lesions, suggesting that these genetic alterations are important in the development and progression of melanoma. To examine whether allelic loss is of prognostic importance in melanoma, disease-free survival was related to loss of heterozygosity on 6q, 9p and 10q in 83 individuals with sporadic primary cutaneous melanoma. Loss of chromosome arms 6q and 10q were each significantly associated with a poorer clinical outcome (P=0.013 and P=0.001 respectively). In a subgroup of 41 subjects whose primary tumours were allelotyped, the fractional allelic loss (FAL) at 39 autosomal arms also significantly correlated with disease-free survival (P=0.013), with an increase in FAL associated with a poorer outcome; this association remained significant when controlled for tumour thickness (P=0.035). In addition, a greater proportion of cells were immunopositive for Ki67 antigen, p53 and p21WAF1 protein in the primary melanomas than in the benign melanocytic nevi, however, only p53 over-expression was significantly associated with improved survival (P=0.041). 相似文献

Deep excavations are widely used for the development of underground space. The structural performance of any deep excavation is influenced by details of the soil behaviour, the form of the retaining and support structures that are employed and also the sequence of construction. Finite element analysis is potentially an effective tool for considering both the geotechnical and structural aspects of the design of deep excavations. To capture the main features of the excavation behaviour, a finite element model is required that is able to represent the principal deformation and structural mechanisms at an appropriate level of detail. The current paper explores the various modelling assumptions that need to be considered when developing detailed 3D finite element models for the design of deep excavations. A parametric study is described, based on an idealised square excavation, to investigate the influence that certain key features of the model can have on the quality of the computed results. The study includes the choice of element type to model the structural components, the selection of appropriate material parameters, the choice of procedures to model post-cure shrinkage of the concrete elements and the choice of procedure to model the soil/structure interfaces. The results of this parametric study provide guidance for the development of finite element models for practical design purposes. 相似文献

1. Pressure ulcers continue to be a serious problem in nursing home settings. They are significant as a source of discomfort and disability among nursing home residents, as well as a source of financial concern for the institutional agencies responsible for resident care. 2. Prevention and intervention at the earliest stages of pressure ulcer development offer the most effective approaches to mediating the human and economic costs imposed by pressure ulcers. 3. Strategies that are effective in reducing both the development and severity of pressure ulcers can be successfully implemented in long-term care settings. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation is used to reduce pain but also may be useful for self-injurious behavior (SIB). In the current investigation, a microcurrent electromedical device, classified as a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator (TENS), was applied with a man with Down syndrome who displayed SIB that persisted in the absence of social contingencies. Transducers with in-built microprocessors will gain in popularity over the next few years. As they do so, they will become
a familiar component in the large and complex control systems in process and manufacturing environments. This paper discusses
the use of Local Area Networks' (LANs), digital communication techniques in a system that can provide an efficient and flexible
interconnect for a number of transducers involved in monitoring and control. Justification of the use of a bus type system,
as opposed to other LAN topologies, is based on it providing a minimal interconnect distance and greatest interconnect flexibility.
Simulations have been performed to determine the loading/delay characteristics of two types of bus protocol when implemented
on single chip microprocessors. These delays are then used in the simulation of a control loop to determine their effect on
the output error of a simple first order process. The investigation of these responses will eventually lead to system design
criteria for loading/control response objectives.

In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, mutations in vacuolar protein sorting (VPS) genes result in secretion of proteins normally localized to the vacuole. Characterization of the VPS pathway has provided considerable insight into mechanisms of protein sorting and vesicle-mediated intracellular transport. We have cloned VPS9 by complementation of the vacuolar protein sorting defect of vps9 cells, characterized its gene product, and investigated its role in vacuolar protein sorting. Cells with a vps9 disruption exhibit severe vacuolar protein sorting defects and a temperature-sensitive growth defect at 38 degrees C. Electron microscopic examination of delta vps9 cells revealed the appearance of novel reticular membrane structures as well as an accumulation of 40- to 50-nm-diameter vesicles, suggesting that Vps9p may be required for the consumption of transport vesicles containing vacuolar protein precursors. A temperature-conditional allele of vps9 was constructed and used to investigate the function of Vps9p. Immediately upon shifting of temperature-conditional vps9 cells to the nonpermissive temperature, newly synthesized carboxypeptidase Y was secreted, indicating that Vps9p function is directly required in the VPS pathway. Antibodies raised against Vps9p immunoprecipitate a rare 52-kDa protein that fractionates with cytosolic proteins following cell lysis and centrifugation. Analysis of the VPS9 DNA sequence predicts that Vps9p is related to human proteins that bind Ras and negatively regulate Ras-mediated signaling. We term the related regions of Vps9p and these Ras-binding proteins a GTPase binding homology domain and suggest that it defines a family of proteins that bind monomeric GTPases. Vps9p may bind and serve as an effector of a rab GTPase, like Vps2lp, required for vacuolar protein sorting. 相似文献
