Guide to conducting a psychological autopsy.

Much of the writing on the psychological autopsy is reviewed. Several writers' opinions about what should be included in a comprehensive behavioral analysis conducted after an individual's death are compiled in an Appendix. Several additional and new areas to be covered in a psychological autopsy are included. The primary emphasis is on the provision of a practical guide for the working professional. Twenty-four separate factors, ranging from reconstruction of events that occurred before the death to the deceased's family death history, are presented. Some legal considerations are examined briefly in order to acquaint the professional with the significant impact that the results can have on family benefits and criminal prosecution. Characterization of strength properties of thin polycrystalline silicon films for MEMS applications

The aim of this work is to characterize the strength properties of polycrystalline silicon (polysilicon) with the use of tensile and bending test specimens. The strength of thin polysilicon films with different geometry, size and stress concentrations has been measured and correlated with the effective size of the specimen and its stress distribution. The test results are evaluated using a probabilistic strength approach based on the weakest link theory with the use of STAU software. The use of statistic methods of strength prediction of polysilicon test structures with a complex geometry and loading based on test values for standard material tests specimen has been evaluated.     

Our gynecologic heritage. Robert von Olshausen (1835-1915), pioneer in surgical gynecology. 5th contribution on the history of the Berlin Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Robert von Olshausen was an outstanding German gynecologist at the turn of the century and a pioneer of operative gynaecology. His fields of excellency were ovarotomy, the problems of asepsis, carcinoma therapy and the development of obstetrics in general. Under his chairmansship, the Berlin Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Universit?ts-Frauenklinik) became the leading Clinic in Germany. For many years Olshausen was the chairman of the Berlin Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, since 1894 as honorary chairman. The present paper is a biography of Robert von Olshausen, showing his importance for the development of the modern gynaecology in Berlin and Germany.     

An intelligent visualisation and decision support system for decentralised wastewater treatment plants.

Current sanitation concepts of decentralised wastewater treatment and reuse raise the issue of monitoring and maintenance of such systems. To guarantee high quality of the recycled water, systems with high requirements concerning process technology are essential. With increasing numbers of decentralised treatment systems spread over far distances it will become more and more impossible and uneconomic to have expert personnel on site. Therefore, new visualisation and intelligent information systems are necessary. The paper describes the structure and 3D-demonstrations as a base for information visualisation. Up-to-date visualisation techniques, facilitating the cognition of context-adapted information, make it possible to maximise the amount of information presented to the user without overwhelming her or him. Concerning diagnosis and decision support systems in the domain of wastewater treatment, several interesting approaches are presented, estimating their applicability for decentralised wastewater treatment systems. The intelligent decision support system presented here consists of a combined ontology- and case-based reasoning system in addition to a process monitoring system. It is responsible for plausibility checks, error diagnosis, solution proposals, and optimisation suggestions.     

The use of transgenic animals in biotechnology

Conformational effects and affinities of VP-16 (etoposide) and its derivatives to DNA in the presence of Cu(II) ion were examined by circular dichroic (CD) spectra. The Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox kinetics and the hydroxyl radical (.OH) generation from the Cu(II)-complexes were estimated by the stopped-flow kinetics. Based on the results, DNA-cleaving activity of Cu(II)-complexes of VP-16 has been shown to be related with binding affinity of the complex to DNA, Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox and .OH generation, emphasising the mechanism of generated .OH attack to DNA.

Motion of fine grained particles, suspended in turbulent flow . This article considers the motion of particles, suspended in turbulent flow. If the particles are sufficiently small to respond to turbulence, their motion includes stochastic components. Concerning processes like air classification or separation of fine powders the stochastic contribution – characterized by the conception of a particle diffusivity – the particle motion exhibits a detrimental influence. Sharpness of cut and separation efficiency are reduced. The paper aims to present the state of the art in particle diffusion. First, theoretical investigations are reported, attention being focused on the equation of motion of the particle which is the link between the motion of the fluid and the motion of the particle. Then, experimental results are reviewed. The following tendencies can be seen: Particles which response to turbulence of fluid flow show increasing diffusivity with increasing inertia. Field forces like gravity or electrical field forces exhibit a damping effect on diffusivity.     

13C- and 23Na-NMR investigations on alkali cellulose

Summary Solid state ²³Na- and ¹³C-NMR spectra of alkali cellulose are presented as a function of NaOH-concentration of the steeping lye, steeping temperature and amount of adhering lye (press factor).
