Risk factors affecting the course of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are poorly understood. As part of a larger study on characterizing exposure to herbicides in Vietnam, the authors investigated this issue in a random sample of 1,377 American Legionnaires who had served in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War and were followed over a 14-year period. High combat exposure, perceived negative community attitudes at homecoming, minority race, depression symptoms at Time 1, and more anger at Time 1 predicted a more chronic course. Community involvement at Time 1 was protective and associated with decreased risk at Time 2. Discomfort in disclosing Vietnam experiences was associated with an increased risk for developing PTSD but did not predict its course. Combat exposure predicted PTSD course more strongly than any other risk factor. Findings suggest recovery from PTSD is significantly influenced by perceived social support. In this study, the authors identified potential risk factors for partner violence perpetration among a subsample (n=109) of men who participated in a national study of Vietnam veterans. Partner violent (PV) men with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were compared with PV men without PTSD and nonviolent men with PTSD on family-of-origin variables, psychiatric problems, relationship problems, and war-zone factors. PV men with PTSD were the highest of the 3 groups on every risk factor other than childhood abuse. Group contrasts and a classification tree analysis suggest some potential markers and mechanisms for the association between PTSD and partner violence among military veterans and highlight the need for theory development in this area of inquiry. Low-temperature casting of high molecular weight (HMW > 40 kDa) regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) is demonstrated to yield highly crystalline P3HT thin films with well defined and preferentially edge-on oriented [(100) contact plane] nanocrystallites on the pure and silanized Si/SiO2 substrates. Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction provide evidence for the increase in preferential edge-on orientation of P3HT-conjugated backbone while decreasing the film preparation temperature below room temperature. The optimum growth temperature is about −12°C for the given concentration (2 mg/mL in CHCl3). The reduced evaporation rate of the solvent results in a better selection of the thermodynamically stable orientation of nanocrystallites onto the substrate. The degree of preferential orientation and size of the crystallites can be further increased on n-octadecyltrichlorosilane-treated SiO2 substrates as well as by annealing the films at 200°C for 1 h. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Medwise is an interactive computer assisted medical diagnosis program running on a personal computer. The knowledge base (KB) of our Medwise system is founded on a matrix structure representation of disease profiles. This study evaluates some unique features of Medwise, namely the matrix structure, the automatic assignment of weight factors during expansion of the KB, the auxiliary KB with equivalent terms, and the invariance during expansion of the KB. For 104 patients described in 1986 and 1987, the diagnostic outcome was compared to the conclusions of the clinicians. With the use of the matrix and all other options active, Medwise yields the correct diagnosis in 93% of the cases. The performance decreases to 79% if the characteristics of the matrix are eliminated. After the KB was expanded from 2,400 to 3,600 disease profiles, the correct diagnosis was established in 91% while analyzing the same cases. This implies that it may be anticipated that the score of the diagnostic program will not appreciably decrease as the KB expands towards the final goal of 8,500 disease profiles. Furthermore, the lack of standardized medical language limits the potential use of computers in medicine. Incorporation of a separate knowledge base containing equivalent expressions proved to contribute to a better score for the Medwise program.  相似文献

The chemokines CCL5 and CXCL4 are deposited by platelets onto endothelial cells, inducing monocyte arrest. Here, the fate of CCL5 and CXCL4 after endothelial deposition was investigated. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and EA.hy926 cells were incubated with CCL5 or CXCL4 for up to 120 min, and chemokine uptake was analyzed by microscopy and by ELISA. Intracellular calcium signaling was visualized upon chemokine treatment, and monocyte arrest was evaluated under laminar flow. Whereas CXCL4 remained partly on the cell surface, all of the CCL5 was internalized into endothelial cells. Endocytosis of CCL5 and CXCL4 was shown as a rapid and active process that primarily depended on dynamin, clathrin, and G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), but not on surface proteoglycans. Intracellular calcium signals were increased after chemokine treatment. Confocal microscopy and ELISA measurements in cell organelle fractions indicated that both chemokines accumulated in the nucleus. Internalization did not affect leukocyte arrest, as pretreatment of chemokines and subsequent washing did not alter monocyte adhesion to endothelial cells. Endothelial cells rapidly and actively internalize CCL5 and CXCL4 by clathrin and dynamin-dependent endocytosis, where the chemokines appear to be directed to the nucleus. These findings expand our knowledge of how chemokines attract leukocytes to sites of inflammation.  相似文献

All-conjugated block copolymers of the rod-rod type came into the focus of interest because of their unique and attractive combination of nanostructure formation and electronic activity. Potential applications in a next generation of organic polymer materials for photovoltaic devices ("bulk heterojunction"-type solar cells) or (bio)sensors have been proposed. Combining the fascinating self-assembly properties of block copolymers with the active electronic and/or optical function of conjugated polymers in all-conjugated block copolymers is, therefore, a very challenging goal of synthetic polymer chemistry. First examples of such all-conjugated block copolymers from a couple of research groups all over the world demonstrate possible synthetic approaches and the rich application potential in electronic devices. A crucial point in such a development of novel polymer materials is a rational control over their nanostructure formation. All-conjugated di- or triblock copolymers may allow for an organization of the copolymer materials into large-area ordered arrays with a length scale of nanostructure formation of the order of the exciton diffusion length of organic semiconductors (typically ca. 10 nm). Especially for amphiphilic, all-conjugated copolymers the formation of well-defined supramolecular structures (vesicles) has been observed. However, intense further research is necessary toward tailor-made, all-conjugated block copolymers for specific applications. The search for optimized block copolymer materials should consider the electronic as well as the morphological (self-assembly) properties.  相似文献

Objective: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) reflects a prolonged stress reaction and dysregulation of the stress response system and is hypothesized to increase risk of developing coronary heart disease (CHD). No study has tested this hypothesis in women even though PTSD is more prevalent among women than men. This study aims to examine whether higher levels of PTSD symptoms are associated with increased risk of incident CHD among women. Design: A prospective study using data from women participating in the Baltimore cohort of the Epidemiologic Catchment Area study (n = 1059). Past year trauma and associated PTSD symptoms were assessed using the NIMH Diagnostic Interview Schedule. Main Outcome Measures: Incident CHD occurring during the 14-year follow-up through 1996. Results: Women with five or more symptoms were at over three times the risk of incident CHD compared with those with no symptoms (age-adjusted OR = 3.21, 95% CI: 1.29-7.98). Findings were maintained after controlling for standard coronary risk factors as well as depression or trait anxiety. Conclusion: PTSD symptoms may have damaging effects on physical health for civilian community-dwelling women, with high levels of PTSD symptoms associated with increased risk of CHD-related morbidity and mortality. The simple measurement of birefringence by means of a tilting compensator becomes difficult and unreliable when large phase differences must be compensated in samples in which dispersion of birefringence differs from that of the compensator. The problem is treated experimentally and theoretically. The result is a simple correction formula with only one parameter. A method to obtain this parameter is presented. Measurements on polycarbonate, polyethylene and polyurethane support the assumptions of the theoretical calculations.  相似文献

In mammalian muscle a postnatal switch in functional properties of neuromuscular transmission occurs when miniature end plate currents become shorter and the conductance and Ca2+ permeability of end plate channels increases. These changes are due to replacement during early neonatal development of the gamma-subunit of the fetal acetylcholine receptor (AChR) by the epsilon-subunit. The long-term functional consequences of this switch for neuromuscular transmission and motor behavior of the animal remained elusive. We report that deletion of the epsilon-subunit gene caused in homozygous mutant mice the persistence of gamma-subunit gene expression in juvenile and adult animals. Neuromuscular transmission in these animals is based on fetal type AChRs present in the end plate at reduced density. Impaired neuromuscular transmission, progressive muscle weakness, and atrophy caused premature death 2 to 3 months after birth. The results demonstrate that postnatal incorporation into the end plate of epsilon-subunit containing AChRs is essential for normal development of skeletal muscle.  相似文献
