Soybean oil hydrogenation alters the linolenic acid molecule to prevent the oil from becoming rancid, however, health reports have indicated trans-fat caused by hydrogenation, is not generally regarded as safe. Typical soybeans contain approximately 80 g kg−1 to 120 g kg−1 linolenic acid and 240 g kg−1 of oleic acid. In an effort to accommodate the need for high-quality oil, the United Soybean Board introduced an industry standard for a high oleic acid greater than 750 g kg−1 and linolenic acid less than 30 g kg−1 oil. By combing mutations in the soybean plant at four loci, FAD2-1A and FAD2-1B, oleate desaturase genes and FAD3A and FAD3C, linoleate desaturase genes, and seed oil will not require hydrogenation to prevent oxidation and produce high-quality oil. In 2017 and 2018, a study comparing four near-isogenic lines across multiple Tennessee locations was performed to identify agronomic traits associated with mutations in FAD3A and FAD3C loci, while holding FAD2-1A and FAD2-1B constant in the mutant (high oleic) state. Soybean lines were assessed for yield and oil quality based on mutations at FAD2-1 and FAD3 loci. Variations of wild-type and mutant genotypes were compared at FAD3A and FAD3C loci. Analysis using a generalized linear mixed model in SAS 9.4, indicated no yield drag or other negative agronomic traits associated with the high oleic and low linolenic acid genotype. All four mutations of fad2-1A, fad2-1B, fad3A, and fad3C were determined as necessary to produce a soybean with the new industry standard (>750 g kg−1 oleic and <30 g kg−1 linolenic acid) in a maturity group-IV-Late cultivar for Tennessee growers.  相似文献

The recently developed cavity attenuated phase shift particulate matter single scattering albedo (CAPS PMSSA) monitor has been shown to be fairly accurate and robust for real-time aerosol optical properties measurements. The scattering component of the measurement undergoes a truncation error due to the loss of scattered light from the sample tube in both the forward and backward directions. Previous studies estimated the loss of scattered light typically using the Mie theory for spherical particles, assuming particles are present only on the sampling tube centerline, and without accounting for the effects of sampling tube surface reflection. This study overcomes these limitations by solving the radiative transfer equation in an axisymmetric absorbing and scattering medium using the discrete-ordinates method to estimate the scattering truncation error. The effects of absorption coefficient, scattering coefficient, asymmetry parameter of the scattering phase function, and the reflection coefficient at the sampling tube inner surface were investigated. Under typical conditions of CAPS PMSSA operation of low extinction coefficients below about 5000 Mm?1, the scattering loss remains independent of the absorption and scattering coefficients but is dependent on the scattering phase function and the reflection coefficient of the sampling glass tube inner surface. The proposed method was used to investigate the effects of asymmetry parameter and surface reflection coefficient on truncation for absorbing aerosol particles whose scattering phase function can be well represented by the Henyey-Greenstein approximation. The scattering loss increases with increasing the asymmetry parameter and the surface reflection coefficient.

Previous studies have shown that tetrapolar electrical impedance spectroscopy measurements can identify cervical interstitial neoplasia with the same sensitivity and specificity as cervical smears. In the urinary bladder, the same technique yields significant differences (p < 0.05 at seven frequencies between 9.6 and 614 kHz) between normal and malignant urothelium, but is unable to classify individual measurements. Detailed histological examination demonstrates that inflammation and edema--both of which are common in abnormal urothelium--alter the impedance spectrum significantly in opposing directions. Consideration of morphological changes in abnormal urothelium suggests alternative measurement strategies.  相似文献

The concept of a thin layer of mobile hydrocarbon-based lubricant providing protection by replenishment to a surface already protected by a chemically bound material has been explored for the first time, for application to silicon-based microelectromechanical (MEMS) systems. Several bound/mobile pairs of lubricants were evaluated to study the effects of bound phase end group and mobile phase chemical functionality on wettability and performance. The bound species studied were derived from 1-decanol and 1,7-heptanediol. Mobile phases investigated were, a pentaerythritol ester, a multiply alkylated cyclopentane, Pennzane, and a polysilane developed for spacecraft application. Hydrocarbon lubricant performance was evaluated using electrostatic motors run in dry air, and was compared with that provided by Fomblin Zdol under identical conditions. Motors with hydrocarbon coatings showed substantial improvement in performance over uncoated motors, and for some bound/mobile pairs, was equal to Zdol within experimental error. We believe that for silicon-based devices, hydrocarbon coatings will be preferable at least for some applications, as the degradation observed due to aging of a fluorinated lubricant in direct contact with a silicon surface is absent.  相似文献

The probability of nuisance operations of distribution fuse links due to lightning-induced current surges is the subject of much discussion today. This discussion is driven, in part, by the practice of moving the surge arrester to the transformer tank to improve overvoltage protection of the transformer. One consequence of this practice is that the probability of nuisance operation of the fuse link protecting the transformer will increase significantly unless larger fuse-link sizes are employed or unless high-surge-capacity fuse links are used. Section II of this paper describes a method for determining the probability of nuisance operations of fuse links under various conditions. The Sheffield knee arthroscopy training system (SKATS) was originally a visual-based virtual environment without haptic feedback, but has been further developed as a mixed reality-training environment through the use of tactile augmentation (or passive haptics). The design of the new system is outlined and then tested. In the first experiment described, the effect of tactile augmentation on performance is considered by comparing novice performance using the original and mixed reality system. In the second experiment the mixed reality system is assessed in terms of construct validity by comparing the performance of users with differing levels of surgical expertise. The results are discussed in terms of the validity of a mixed reality environment for training knee arthroscopy.  相似文献

The complete sequence of the genomes of two model plants is now available together with technology for the parallel analysis of thousands of genes, the proteins that they encode and the metabolites whose production they control. This review focuses on application of these technologies to engineer output characteristics of crops specifically relevant to non‐food use. Following a brief introduction to the resources available for genomic analysis, some examples are provided of how genomics is enabling both transgenic and non‐GM manipulation of agricultural materials such as carbohydrates, oils, fibres and speciality chemicals for use as industrial feedstocks. Building on previous research in computer-mediated communication, social and communication networks, and adolescent development, this article raises three issues regarding adolescent use of socially interactive technologies (SITs) and their relationship to offline social networks: 1) whether adolescents are creating more, but weaker ties using SITs, 2) to what extent adolescent SIT-facilitated networks overlap with friendship networks, and 3) whether SIT relationships are important for adolescents who have fewer offline peer ties. In order to investigate these questions, network data collection and analysis were integrated with more traditional questionnaire methodology and statistical analysis. The results show that the adolescents in the study were not creating more ties using SITs, nor were they necessarily creating weaker SIT-based ties; that there was little overlap between SIT-facilitated and offline social networks; and that socially isolated adolescents were less likely than other adolescents to use SITs.  相似文献

Exercise leads to marked increases in muscle insulin sensitivity and glucose effectiveness. Oral glucose tolerance immediately after exercise is generally not improved. The hypothesis tested by these experiments is that after exercise the increased muscle glucose uptake during an intestinal glucose load is counterbalanced by an increase in the efficiency with which glucose enters the circulation and that this occurs due to an increase in intestinal glucose absorption or decrease in hepatic glucose disposal. For this purpose, sampling (artery and portal, hepatic, and femoral veins) and infusion (vena cava, duodenum) catheters and Doppler flow probes (portal vein, hepatic artery, external iliac artery) were implanted 17 d before study. Overnightfasted dogs were studied after 150 min of moderate treadmill exercise or an equal duration rest period. Glucose ([14C]glucose labeled) was infused in the duodenum at 8 mg/kg x min for 150 min beginning 30 min after exercise or rest periods. Values, depending on the specific variable, are the mean +/- SE for six to eight dogs. Measurements are from the last 60 min of the intraduodenal glucose infusion. In response to intraduodenal glucose, arterial plasma glucose rose more in exercised (103 +/- 4 to 154 +/- 6 mg/dl) compared with rested (104 +/- 2 to 139 +/- 3 mg/dl) dogs. The greater increase in glucose occurred even though net limb glucose uptake was elevated after exercise (35 +/- 5 vs. 20 +/- 2 mg/min) as net splanchnic glucose output (5.1 +/- 0.8 vs. 2.1 +/- 0.6 mg/kg x min) and systemic appearance of intraduodenal glucose (8.1 +/- 0.6 vs. 6.3 +/- 0.7 mg/kg x min) were also increased due to a higher net gut glucose output (6.1 +/- 0.7 vs. 3.6 +/- 0.9 mg/kg x min). Adaptations at the muscle led to increased net glycogen deposition after exercise [1.4 +/- 0.3 vs. 0.5 +/- 0.1 mg/(gram of tissue x 150 min)], while no such increase in glycogen storage was seen in liver [3.9 +/- 1.0 vs. 4.1 +/- 1.1 mg/(gram of tissue x 150 min) in exercised and sedentary animals, respectively]. These experiments show that the increase in the ability of previously working muscle to store glycogen is not solely a result of changes at the muscle itself, but is also a result of changes in the splanchnic bed that increase the efficiency with which oral glucose is made available in the systemic circulation.  相似文献
