Attacks by adult stages of the soft tick Argas (Argas) neghmei (Acari: Argasidae) on inhabitants of the High Andean plateau of Argentina are reported. This is the first local report of this species, which was previously found in the north of Chile. Taxonomic differences between A. (A.) neghmei and other neotropical and exotic species of the genus are underlined. The status of the knowledge about the Argentine argasid fauna is briefly described.  相似文献

In a previous study we have demonstrated that endogenous neurotrophin 3 (NT3) is required for the survival of most sympathetic neurones in postnatal rats. However, the mechanisms underlying the action of NT3 on sympathetic neurones is not known. Neither is it understood whether NT3 is retrogradely transported from peripheral tissues or acts locally in an autocrine fashion. In the present study, NT3-mRNA was quantified in sympathetic effector tissues and NT3 protein was localized in intact and lesioned sympathetic nerves in rats. NT3-mRNA is expressed and developmentally regulated in many effector tissues including mesenteric arteries, salivary gland, heart and kidney but hardly detectable in the superior cervical ganglia of adult animals. The majority of sympathetic neurones express immunoreactivity for TrkA and TrkC in both neonatal and adult rats. Sympathetic somata are normally immunoreactive for NT3, but the immunoreactivity is abolished by systemic administration of NT3 antibodies or axotomy of postganglionic neurones, suggesting an accumulation of NT3 from extraneuronal sources. Furthermore, the detection of NT3-immunoreactivity in the internal carotid nerve as early as 3 h following a compression and only on the distal side indicates endogenous NT3 is retrogradely transported by sympathetic neurones. These studies provide evidence indicating that NT3, like nerve growth factor, is an effector tissue-derived neurotrophic factor for sympathetic neurones both during development and in the adult animal. Thus, we have provided a clear example that one type of neurone derives, through a retrograde transport mechanism, two neurotrophic factors simultaneously from its peripheral effector tissues.  相似文献

The effect of chloroquine (CHQ) administration on antioxidant enzymes in rat liver and kidney was studied. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were administered 20 mg/kg CHQ once a week for 4 weeks (chronic treatment) or a single dose at 10 or 20 mg/kg (acute treatment). Antioxidant enzyme activities were determined in cytosolic fractions of liver and kidney, whereas reduced glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were determined in tissue samples. Results indicate minimal effects of acute CHQ treatment, whereas chronic treatment with CHQ differentially affected antioxidant enzymes in the two organs. Superoxide dismutase activity was increased nearly twofold, while activities of selenium glutathione peroxidase (GPX), catalase, and NAD (P) H: quinone oxidoreductase were decreased in livers of CHQ-treated rats compared to controls. No significant effects of CHQ on glutathione reductase, GSH, and MDA levels were seen in the liver. Fewer effects of CHQ were observed in the kidney where a decrease in GPX activity and an increase in MDA levels was seen. Lowering of antioxidant enzymes activities in the liver by CHQ could render the organ more susceptible to subsequent oxidative stress; while increased MDA production after CHQ treatment in the kidney indicate that the organ is being subjected to oxidative stress. This could have implications for prolonged chloroquine intake.  相似文献

The incidence of stress fractures is increasing among competitive and recreational athletes as well as among children and the elderly. By understanding the continuum of bone's response to stress and maintaining an appropriate index of suspicion, the health care provider can diagnose these injuries appropriately. BACKGROUND: Controversy surrounds the treatment of traumatic central cord syndrome (TCCS), as there are strong advocates for nonsurgical treatment for most patients. However, conservative treatment has been shown to yield a longer period of discomfort from pain and weakness in certain cases. METHODS: In a retrospective review of 114 patients presenting with acute or chronic TCCS from 1988-94, four different age groups were separately observed under different treatments. Motor and sensory recovery were assessed. RESULTS: Better results were achieved in younger patients, with or without radiographic abnormalities, and in patients with clinically correlated encroaching cord lesions who received early surgical decompression. CONCLUSIONS: Surgical intervention for TCCS must be addressed with careful clinical and radiographic survey. Removal of offending lesions in the subacute period results in significant motor and sensory improvement in short-term and long-term follow-up.  相似文献

Three plain weave fabric composite analysis models are presented for the prediction of the on-axes thermal expansion coefficients. These are two-dimensional models in the sense that the actual strand cross-sectional geometry, strand undulation and the presence of a gap between the adjacent strands are taken into account. In the first two models, termed refined models, the representative unit cell is discretised into slices and elements and analysed. In the third method, a closed-form solution is presented. In this case, the representative unit cell is idealised as a crossply laminate and analysed. The relative merits and demerits of the models are also discussed. The predicted results are compared with the experimental values. A good correlation is observed.  相似文献

The influence of a condensation product (CP) of veratraldehyde (VRTD) and p-amino benzoic acid (PABA) on Zn-Ni alloy electrodeposited onto mild steel was studied in acidic sulphate solutions. Ethylenediaminetetraaceticacid (EDTA) and cetyltrimethylammoniumbromide (CTAB) were used as complexing and wetting agents, respectively. The effect of bath constituents, pH, current density and temperature on nature of deposit were studied through Hull cell experiments. The bath constituents and operating parameters were optimized. Deposit properties and corrosion resistance were discussed. Throwing power, current efficiency and polarization studies were carried out. SEM photomicrographs of the deposit obtained from optimum bath revealed fine-grained deposit of the alloy in the presence of condensation product and hence modified the morphology of zinc-nickel alloy deposit. IR spectrum of the scrapped deposit showed inclusion of addition agent.  相似文献

Pleiotrophin (PTN) is a heparin-binding cytokine that functions as a neurite outgrowth promoting and mitogenic activity in vitro. PTN is highly conserved and its gene is widely expressed in mammalian tissues during development, suggesting important roles of PTN in vivo. However, the mechanisms by which PTN mediates its functional activities are unknown. We now report that an approximately 200 kDa (p200) protein is phosphorylated (pp200) in PTN stimulated NIH 3T3 and NB41A3 cells five minutes after stimulation with PTN. Phosphorylation is maximum at 15 minutes and is PTN concentration dependent. pp200 is recognized by antiphosphotyrosine antibodies and contains both phosphotyrosine and phosphoserine by phosphoamino acid analysis. The results suggest that PTN functions in part through activation of protein kinase(s) in NIH 3T3 and NB41A3 cells.  相似文献
