The collision estimator is used in a second-order derivative sampling scheme for fixed-source problems involving a perturbation in the material density. The analytical formulation of a one-group problem in a finite slab with forward scattering is demonstrated to obtain exact expressions for the collision density and its derivatives. The track length estimator is also used for comparisons in some cases. Results are presented for a two-group multi-region problem using the MORSE code. The predicted collision densities in zones close to the source are found to be in excellent agreement with those obtained in full ‘re-runs’.  相似文献

This paper presents a study of the effects of harsh outdoor weather and warm sea water on the tensile behavior of Glass-Fiber Reinforced Vinylester (GFRV) pipe materials destined for sea water handling and transportation. The effect of Dhahran’s outdoor weather for exposure periods ranging from 3 to 36 months revealed an improvement in tensile strength when compared with the as received GFRV sample. A significant increasing trend of tensile strength from 3 to 12 months was noted. This is attributed mainly to the post curing effects resulting in higher cross linking density. After 12 months of exposure the tensile strength showed a decreasing trend, but remaining still higher than the average tensile strength of as received (baseline) GFRV sample. Similar results of enhanced tensile strength were noted after immersion of GFRV pipes in warm Gulf sea water for 12 months. Fractographic analysis was performed on the tensile tested GFRV samples using optical microscope followed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The characterization of the controlling failure mechanisms involved from fracture initiation to fracture propagation through the gage section of the specimen were predicted and were justified by correlating the optical and SEM pictures.  相似文献

Polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) thin films consisting of alternate layers of two PEM systems, that is poly(diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride)/poly(vinyl sulfate) (PDAC/PVS) and poly(allyl amine hydrochloride) (PAH)/ are successfully deposited on polysulfone (PSF) support using spin‐assisted layer‐by‐layer assembly. The films are characterized using atomic force microscope, Fourier transform Infrared, and contact angle measurement. The salt (NaCl) rejection and water flux of the [PDAC/PVS] and [PAH/PVS] membranes are also evaluated using a crossflow permeation test cell. The permeation test shows that 120 bilayers of [PAH/PVS] on PSF substrate provide salt rejection of 53% and water flux of 37 L/m2 h, whereas that of PDAC/PVS on PSF substrate provide salt rejection of 21% and water flux of 90 L/m2 h for a 2000‐ppm NaCl solution feed at a pressure of 40 bar and temperature of 25°C. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Effect of temperature and loading frequency on the fatigue fracture process in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe material has been investigated in this study via optical and scanning electron microscopy. Fatigue tests were performed using rectangular coupons obtained by slitting and flattening 50-mm-wide ring sections from 4-inch schedule 80 HDPE pipes. The flattening was carried out in a specially designed compression fixture at a temperature of 105?°C. Fatigue tests were conducted at temperatures of 0, 23, and 40?°C and loading frequencies of 0.1, 1, and 50?Hz. Fracture surface examinations reveal that the fatigue crack-growth process at all the test temperatures and loading frequencies involved mechanisms of shear yielding and crazing. Crack growth via crazing was found to be the dominant mechanism at higher temperature of 40?°C, while at 0?°C, a small amount of initial shear yielding precede the crazing process. Filler material particles contained in the HDPE pipe material play an important role of stress concentrators and help in micro-void nucleation, which promotes crack growth via crazing. The fatigue resistance of HDPE may thus be improved by addressing the stress concentration effect of filler particles.  相似文献

Circadian (approximately 24-hr) rhythms in Drosophila melanogaster depend upon cyclic expression of the period (per) and timeless (tim) genes, which encode interacting components of the endogenous clock. The per gene has been isolated from other insects and, more recently, a per ortholog was found in mammals where its expression oscillates in a circadian fashion. We report here the complete sequence of a tim gene from another species, Drosophila virilis. TIM is better conserved than the PER protein is between these two species (76 vs. 54% overall amino acid identity), and putative functional domains, such as the PER interaction domains and the nuclear localization signal, are highly conserved. The acidic domain and the cytoplasmic localization domain, however, are within the least conserved regions. In addition, the initiating methionine in the D. virilis gene lies downstream of the proposed translation start for the original D. melanogaster tim cDNA and corresponds to the one used by D. simulans and D. yakuba. Among the most conserved parts of TIM is a region of unknown function near the N terminus. We show here that deletion of a 32 amino acid segment within this region affects rescue of rhythms in arrhythmic tim01 flies. Flies carrying a full-length tim transgene displayed rhythms with approximately 24-hr periods, indicating that a fully functional clock can be restored in tim01 flies through expression of a tim transgene. Deletion of the segment mentioned above resulted in very long activity rhythms with periods ranging from 30.5 to 48 hr.  相似文献

A cDNA was prepared that coded for the signal peptide of type III procollagen linked to the complete C-propeptide of the protein. The cDNA was then used to express the protein in a baculovirus recombinant system. Recombinant protein was recovered as a trimer from the medium of transfected cells in a yield of 1 to 2.5 mg per liter. Mapping of peptide fragments with and without reduction indicated that the protein contained the expected interchain disulfide bonds. Analysis by circular dichroism suggested that the conformation of the protein corresponded to the native conformation. Therefore, the protein should be appropriate for further tests of its biological function and analysis of structure by X-ray diffraction.  相似文献
