Problems associated with different calibration techniques and some instrumental effects that can determine instrumental accuracy are discussed. It is shown how transmission effects can be observed and used to generate a correction curve for refracted near-field instruments. High-quality fiber slices needed for axial interferometry were used to obtain refractive index differences on suitable fibers to ±1% with the measurements traceable to national standards. Interferometry was used to calibrate a multiple-step fiber which is available in 10-m lengths with a certificate of calibration. The limitations of the technique are discussed, and preliminary results of a study on the effects of residual stress and stress relief on measurements are given. Comparisons are made between measurements made by axial interferometry and refracted near field on a range of fibers. It is shown that commercial profilers can produce reliable measurements of refractive index difference, absolute refractive index, profile shape, and numerical aperture that agree well with measurements by other techniques 相似文献

Computer based discrete event simulation (DES) is one of the most commonly used aids for the design of automotive manufacturing systems. However, DES tools represent machines in extensive detail, while only representing workers as simple resources. This presents a problem when modelling systems with a highly manual work content, such as an assembly line. This paper describes research at Cranfield University, in collaboration with the Ford Motor Company, founded on the assumption that human variation is the cause of a large percentage of the disparity between simulation predictions and real world performance. Virtual environments (VE) are becoming an important tool for simulating manufacturing systems. A problem in their adoption is the lack of an easy and effective approach to building large and complex virtual environments that are required by many manufacturing simulation tasks. This paper reports on research into this problem and presents a novel approach - domain-analysis-based top-down construction - to constructing complex virtual manufacturing environments. Manufacturing system design is an ongoing activity within industry. Modelling tools based on Discrete Event Simulation are often used by practitioners during this design cycle. However, such tools do not adequately model the behaviour of 'direct' workers in manufacturing environments. There is an important need to expand the capability of modelling to include the relationships between human centred factors (demography, attitudes, beliefs, etc), their working environment (physical and organizational), and their subsequent performance in terms of productive routines. We have investigated the responses of cow teats to machine milking in a study of relatively newly installed commercial milking parlours fitted with one of two types of milking cluster. The first was a common type with a large claw volume (> 200 ml), 15-16 mm i.d. long milk tube, 10 mm short pulse tube, cluster weight < 3-2 kg and used alternate pulsation. The second was a more traditional type with a 150 ml claw bowl volume, 13.5 mm i.d. long milk tube, 8 mm short pulse tube, cluster weight approximately 3.5 kg and used simultaneous pulsation. We scored approximately 50 cows in each of 20 herds, all within 60 s of cluster removal, for changes from the premilking teat condition: teat colour (creation of reddening or blueness), firmness, thickening at the base of the teat associated with the position of the liner mouthpiece, and whether the teat duct orifice was open. There were statistically significant differences in the proportion of cows displaying these four alterations in teat condition between herds using the two types of cluster. The more common type of cluster was always associated with better teat condition. The cause and effect of poorer teat condition have not been fully established and are likely to be multifactorial. Mammalian tissues express three immunologically distinct peroxiredoxin (Prx) proteins (Prx I, II, and III), which are the products of distinct genes. With the use of recombinant proteins Prx I, II, and III, all have now been shown to possess peroxidase activity and to rely on Trx as a source of reducing equivalents for the reduction of H2O2. Prx I and II are cytosolic proteins, whereas Prx III is localized in mitochondria. Transient overexpression of Prx I or II in cultured cells showed that they were able to eliminate the intracellular H2O2 generated in response to growth factors. Moreover, the activation of nuclear factor kappaB (NFkappaB) induced by extracellularly added H2O2 or tumor necrosis factor-alpha was blocked by overproduction of Prx II. These results suggest that, together with glutathione peroxidase and catalase, Prx enzymes likely play an important role in eliminating peroxides generated during metabolism. In addition, Prx I and II might participate in the signaling cascades of growth factors and tumor necrosis factor-alpha by regulating the intracellular concentration of H2O2. 相似文献

Foods are carriers for the delivery of probiotics to the human body. In addition, foods help to buffer the probiotic through the gastrointestinal tract, regulate their colonization and contain other functional ingredients, such as bioactive components, which may interact with probiotics to alter their functionality and efficacy. The growth and survival of probiotics during gastric transit is affected by the physico-chemical properties of food carriers. Gastric acid, juices and bile tolerance, adherence to gastrointestinal epithelium and the acid production of probiotics are also affected by the food ingredients used in probiotic delivery. Same probiotic strains could vary in functional and technological properties in the presence of different food ingredients. Prebiotic food ingredients encourage the growth of probiotic bacteria. The appropriate combination of prebiotics and probiotics manifest higher potential for a synergistic effect. Originally, probiotic delivery was consistently associated with foods, particularly dairy foods. But nowadays, there is an increasing trend toward using probiotics in different food systems despite its original sources and even as nutraceuticals, such as in capsules. This changing trend in delivering probiotics may lead to a reduction in functional efficacy due to the exclusion of the potential synergistic effect of the food. Thus, selection of suitable food systems to deliver probiotics is a vital factor that should be considered in developing functional probiotic foods.
