This work presents a new one‐step process enabling the mask‐free localized functionalization by organic polymers of the conducting or semiconducting parts of composite surfaces at the micrometer and submicrometer scale. The functionalization is carried out via cathodic electrografting of suitable precursors of composite cathodes, which gives an insulating polymer film strongly grafted to selected parts of the composite electrodes and guarantees that the resolution is that of the pre‐existing pattern, even when the whole surface is dipped into the reaction medium. The presumed mechanism is based on a regioselective extraction of electrons from the composite surface according to its apparent local work function in solution.
Studying the changes of shape is a common concern in many scientific fields. We address here two problems: (1) quantifying the deformation between two given shapes and (2) transporting this deformation to morph a third shape. These operations can be done with or without point correspondence, depending on the availability of a surface matching algorithm, and on the type of mathematical procedure adopted. In computer vision, the re-targeting of emotions mapped on faces is a common application. We contrast here four different methods used for transporting the deformation toward a target once it was estimated upon the matching of two shapes. These methods come from very different fields such as computational anatomy, computer vision and biology. We used the large diffeomorphic deformation metric mapping and thin plate spline, in order to estimate deformations in a deformational trajectory of a human face experiencing different emotions. Then we use naive transport (NT), linear shift (LS), direct transport (DT) and fanning scheme (FS) to transport the estimated deformations toward four alien faces constituted by 240 homologous points and identifying a triangulation structure of 416 triangles. We used both local and global criteria for evaluating the performance of the 4 methods, e.g., the maintenance of the original deformation. We found DT, LS and FS very effective in recovering the original deformation while NT fails under several aspects in transporting the shape change. As the best method may differ depending on the application, we recommend carefully testing different methods in order to choose the best one for any specific application.
The effects of annealing treatments on the structure and mechanical properties of cobalt electrodeposits have been studied. Annealing temperatures range from 250–800 °C, i.e. below, as well as above, the allotropic -h c p -f c c transformation temperature (417 °C). The structural characterization included hydrogen content measurement, relative volume fraction of and phases determination by X-ray diffraction, and microstructural investigations by optical and electron microscopy. The results showed that an annealing is a very effective means to optimize the ductility of cobalt electrodeposits. The increase of ductility observed after annealing is essentially due to a decrease of the stacking fault density in the deposits. Annealing treatment above the allotropic transformation temperature also produces, in some deposits, an increase of the ductile -f c c phase content, but this fact does not lead to supplementary improvements of ductility. This is due to the detrimental influence of hydrogen that always exists in these deposits.
The causes of environmental changes, including climate, are neither fully understood nor identified, nor do scientists agree about their nature. Yet, their impact is such that action cannot be delayed. This involves spreading public awareness through environmental education and sensitization. Hence a need to reach, to educate the poorly informed public at large. With the classroom as the base, “town meetings” and eco‐tourism may constitute potentially useful approaches towards that goal.
Processing municipal and industrial wastes on land and particularly near inhabited centra has met with increased opposition. An apparent remedy to the problem is the establishment of such facilities offshore, hence various projects to build them on artificial islands. The paper examines a concrete proposal to locate such an island offshore from the Belgian Coast. Oceanographic and environmental aspects of the site are discussed, construction methods reviewed, erosion and corrosion effects looked at. The possibility of utilizing ocean power to provide the necessary operation energy is likewise considered.
Although the direct involvement of nitrogen and phosphorus has been shown, eutrophication remains poorly managed to this day. The excessive growth of some opportunist seaweeds is the consequence in coastal ecosystems close to agricultural or strongly urbanized and industrialized zones. In Brittany, a leading tourist region of France, green tides set down on the beaches big quantities of Ulva, of which some 100,000 m3 are harvested annually, with significant ecological and economic consequences. In Florida, although the macroalgae (notably Codium) drift about with the currents, they are of sufficient mass and spread over such areal extent to inhibit penetration of sunlight through the water column to the coral reef surface. They strand also on the beaches. Stabilization of algae by composting and methanization of hydrolyzed and pressed algae juice are two methods which have been studied in Brittany and can be used to enhance the value of the harvested seaweed, depending on local conditions and on evolution of needs in energy, basic materials or organic products. But the parallel made here between two very different ecosystems, both disturbed, leads above all to the question of what course to follow now to avoid a worldwide disaster.
