The increasing prevalence of streptococci as causes of potentially fatal nosocomial bacteremia requires that antimicrobial agents used for empiric therapy in hospitalized patients include both pneumococci and viridans group streptococci as well as beta-hemolytic streptococci in their activity profile. In this study, the in vitro activity of cefepime, a new fourth-generation cephalosporin, was compared with other cephalosporins versus 197 nosocomial blood stream isolates of streptococci (20 Streptococcus pneumoniae, 104 viridans group, and 73 beta-hemolytic) isolated from patients at more than 30 medial centers from 1995 to 1997. Additional agents tested included penicillin, erythromycin, and vancomycin. Overall, cefepime inhibited 83% of the isolates at concentrations < or = 0.5 microgram/mL and 100% at < or = 8 micrograms/mL. By comparison, ceftazidime inhibited 35 and 88% of isolates at the same concentrations. Cefepime was approximately eightfold more potent than ceftazidime against S. pneumoniae, viridans group streptococci, and beta-hemolytic streptococci. Among the 42 isolates with penicillin MICs > 0.12 microgram/mL, 100% were inhibited by cefepime and only 48% by ceftazidime at < or = 8 micrograms/mL. The rank order of activity for all six agents against the 197 isolates was vancomycin > ceftriaxone > cefepime > penicillin > erythromycin > ceftazidime. Based on the results of the present study, cefepime and ceftriaxone were the superior cephalosporins in potency and spectrum for empiric coverage of patients at risk for streptococcal blood stream infections.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the present study was to compare the inclination of the occlusal plane with occlusal guidance as a contributing factor to masticatory movement. METHODS: Masticatory movements of 41 young adults were measured using a 3-D mandibular movement analysing system. The inclination of the occlusal plane was measured in the sagittal plane using a 3-D digitizer. The contribution of the occlusal guidance and the inclination of the occlusal plane to the direction of the masticatory path of closure was evaluated at various closing levels. RESULTS: The masticatory path of closure outside the intercuspal range was influenced mainly by the inclination of the occlusal plane, and the masticatory path of closure near the intercuspal range was only influenced by occlusal guidance. The so-called gliding type masticatory pattern was observed predominantly in subjects with a posteriorly inclined occlusal plane. In contrast, a chopping type masticatory pattern was observed predominantly in subjects with an anteriorly inclined occlusal plane. CONCLUSIONS: The contribution of the inclination of the occlusal plane to masticatory movement was greater than that of occlusal guidance throughout the closing phase except near the intercuspal range.  相似文献

Primary plant surfaces, covered with cuticles consisting of cutin and waxes, are important substrates for interaction with insects. The composition of leaf surfaces of the myrmecophilic plant Macaranga tanarius was studied. The prenylated flavanone nymphaeol-C was identified in surface extracts and was localized exclusively in glandular trichomes on the abaxial leaf side. The epidermal pavement cells surrounding these trichomes were covered with a smooth film of epicuticular wax from which few small wax crystals protruded. The epicuticular wax amounted to approximately 8 μg cm−2, corresponding to 85% of the wax load on the adaxial as well as the abaxial leaf sides. The epicuticular wax mixtures from both leaf surfaces contained more than 70% primary alcohols, 14% fatty acids, 2% aldehydes, and traces of alkyl acetates, with chain lengths ranging from C20 to C38. In contrast, the intracuticular wax layer was largely dominated by triterpenoid alcohols α-amyrin, β-amyrin, and lupeol. Consequently, these characteristic compounds are not available for direct contact with insects on the plant surface.  相似文献

For an autonomous system to perform maintenance tasks in a networking device or a radio base station (RBS), it has to deal with a series of technological challenges ranging from identifying hardware-related problems to manipulating connectors. This paper describes the development of a robot maintenance system dedicated to detect and resolve faulty links caused by unplugged or poorly connected cables. Although the maintenance system relies on four subsystems, we significantly focus on our low-cost and efficient custom gripper solution developed to handle RJ45 Ethernet connectors. To examine our gripper, we conducted three experiments. First, a qualitative questionnaire was submitted to 30 users in the case of the teleoperated scenario of the gripper attached to a robotic arm. Similarly, we also tested the automatic operation mode. The results showed that our system is reliable and delivers a highly efficient maintenance tool in both teleoperated and autonomous operation modes. The practical experiment containing the removal or unplugging of connectors demonstrated our gripper’s ability to adequately handle these, whereas the feedback from the questionnaire pointed to a positive user experience. The automatic test assessed the gripper’s robustness against the continuous operation.

The warm formability of three sheet magnesium alloys was measured using the OSU formability test adapted for testing at elevated temperatures under isothermal conditions. The adapted test is shown to reliably enforce plane strain tension over a significant fraction of the sample, thus providing an assessment of FLD(0), typically the minimum major strain value on a forming limit diagram. By mathematically modeling the strain as a function of punch displacement, a case is made that the punch displacement itself provides an expedient approach to ranking the relative formability of sheet metals. Combined with knowledge of the constitutive behavior of the material, the punch displacement–strain relationship provides an explanation for the observed shape of the punch load versus displacement curves. OSU formability test results show that a new magnesium sheet alloy, yttrium-containing ZW41, is significantly more formable than traditional magnesium alloys AZ31 and ZK10. The improvement is linked to a more random texture in the new alloy, which diminishes the tendency for gross, catastrophic shear instability typical of the strongly textured traditional alloys.  相似文献

A SOUnding Rocket Compere Experiment (SOURCE) is prepared for launch in spring 2008 and shall deliver approximately 360 s of microgravity time. The experiment is intended to partially fulfill the scientific objectives of the European Space Agency Microgravity Applications Program project AO-2004-111 (Convective boiling and condensation). One of the tasks of this experiment is the investigation of capillary dominated flow at a heated wall. The SOURCE experiment will also serve the needs of the COMPERE research group whose mandate is to investigate the behavior of propellant in spacecraft tanks. SOURCE is a benchmark type of experiment on fluid behavior in tanks to test hypotheses and numerical predictions (quantitative results on a tank scale). Several work packages have been distributed to the Center of Applied Space Technology and Microgravity (ZARM) to manage a part of the preparation of this experiment. Since ZARM acts also as a principal investigator, the subject of surface tension driven flows is one of the main topics. It includes the design of the experimental setup to study free surface behavior as well as the numerical predictions to quantify the heat transfer at a non-isothermal boundary condition in the absence of gravity.  相似文献

Capillary driven surface oscillations of liquid argon (Tsat = 87.3 K at 1,013 hPa) have been investigated in a partly filled right circular cylinder under non-isothermal boundary conditions. The oscillations take place during the reorientation from the normal gravity surface position towards a new position upon step reduction of gravity. The situation is similar to the end of thrust in a rocket tank when the cold propellant moves along the warmer tank wall driven by capillary forces. The aim was to investigate the influence of the temperature difference between the slightly subcooled cryogenic liquid and the superheated cylinder wall on the oscillations and their characteristics in a single-component, two-phase system. Axial wall temperature gradients of averaged 0.15 K/mm ? 1.93 K/mm above the normal gravity surface position were implemented. A general dependence of the reorientation behavior on the gradient value was observed, concerning the apparent contact line behavior, the frequency and damping of the oscillations of the free surface center point, and the apparent contact angle. The behavior of the ullage pressure was found to follow the behavior of the contact line.  相似文献
