Droplet growth is examined in a water-in-oil type emulsion where the droplets are subjected exclusively to viscous and dielectrophoretic forces. The latter are produced by the interaction of the droplets with an otherwise uniformly imposed electric field. Theoretical considerations are presented as a basis for understanding and interpreting the experiments. An emulsion consisting of deionized water droplets in a silicone oil of specific gravity I is subjected to a uniform 60 Hz, ac electrostatic field. Initially, the droplets are fairly monodisperse with mean diameters of approximately 25 , sm. The changes in droplet size distributions with time are examined with a laser diffraction system for water volume fractions ranging from 0.001 to 0.1 and applied fields ranging from 52 to 520 kVm-1. The average droplet size increases exponentially with time; we examine the exponent's dependence on average field strength and droplet volume fraction. 相似文献

As required by the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (HSK) all Switzerland's five nuclear power plants have to install a containment filtered venting system. The integrity of the containment (the last barrier for radioactive releases to the environment) can be threatened by overpressure due to inadequate heat removal. Design requirements have been provided for a specific class of severe accident scenarios. In general the capacity of the system is considered sufficient if it is able to vent the steam production corresponding to a decay heat level of 1% of the thermal reactor power. The mitigation capacity for the reduction of released radioactive material is specified by a retention factor of 1000 for aerosols to prevent or limit a long term ground contamination and a factor of 100 for elementary iodine for prevention or limiting of thyroid doses and to avoid short term evacuation. Besides existing requirements for design, maintenance and operation, additional claims such as passivity and operability at any pressure conditions inside the containment have to be met. Passivity implies that the system can be initiated after a severe accident without any operator action. The system also has to allow early manual venting. Various filtered venting systems are presently available. The nuclear power plants of Beznau, Gosgen, Leibstadt and Muhleberg have already selected such systems and already implemented them or are going to install them step by step. Beznau selected the Sulzer-EWI system which is using a water pool with nozzles-baffle plates and mixing elements to achieve the required filtration of the aerosols. In both Beznau units, the systems are installed and in standby mode. Gosgen, a pressurized water reactor as well as Beznau, is going to implement a filter system developed by Siemens-KWU, known as sliding pressure venting process, combining a venturi scrubber in a water pool and a mesh filter. The boiling water reactor of Leibstadt also selected the same system as Beznau while Müheberg choose the ABB system but not in the common design. The venturi pipes are thereby integrated in the water pool of the outer torus. The system in all five nuclear power plants is fully operable and in standby mode since December 1993. 相似文献

Standard PWM current source inverters (CSIs) usually operate at fixed modulation index. The proposed modified current source inverter (MCSI) can operate with most pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques and with a variable modulation index, since the DC link inductor current freewheels on itself and not through the CSI. The use of variable modulation index control results in faster response times with no penalty on input power factor as compared to other variable modulation index schemes. This paper confirms this by investigating the input characteristics of the MCSI as seen from the AC mains. The quality of the input AC line currents is examined, and a design procedure for the input filters is given. Power factor and efficiency are discussed. Results are compared to those of other current source inverter topologies. Experimental results obtained from a 5 kVA converter confirm the theoretical considerations.<> 相似文献

Asbestos fibers cause dose-dependent, persistent increases in mRNA levels of c-jun and c-fos proto-oncogenes in rat pleural mesothelial (RPM) cells, the progenitor cells of asbestos-induced mesothelioma (N. Heintz, Y. M. W. Janssen, and B. T. Mossman. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA, 90: 3299-3303, 1993). Here we report that addition of N-acetyl-L-cysteine decreases asbestos-mediated induction of c-fos and c-jun mRNA levels in a dose-dependent fashion. Exposure of RPM cells to asbestos causes depletion of total cellular glutathione, a response that can be abolished by pretreatment with N-acetyl-L-cysteine. Pretreatment of cells with buthionine sulfoximine, an agent which diminishes glutathione pools, increases the magnitude of induction of c-fos and c-jun mRNA by asbestos. To determine whether asbestos-induced effects on proto-oncogene expression could be attributed to extracellular generation of active oxygen species (AOS), RPM cells were exposed to H2O2 or xanthine and xanthine oxidase, a generating system of AOS. These oxidant stresses did not decrease cellular glutathione levels nor alter mRNA levels of c-fos or c-jun. However, increased mRNA levels of manganese-containing superoxide dismutase and heme oxygenase were observed, indicating that RPM cells respond to AOS by increased expression of genes encoding antioxidant enzymes. These data indicate that the signaling pathways leading to c-fos/c-jun proto-oncogene induction by asbestos are not triggered directly by formation of extracellular AOS. However, intracellular thiol levels appear to influence the expression of c-fos and c-jun, suggesting a redox-sensitive component in the signaling cascade which modulates gene expression of c-fos and c-jun by asbestos. 相似文献

Nitrate radicals are being recognized as key intermediates in a growing list of important chemical processes in the atmosphere. Here, the role of nitrate radicals (NO3) in tropospheric chemistry is discussed, with special emphasis on results from field measurements, most of which have been made by differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS), with matrix-isolation electron spin resonance being an alternative technique. Nitrate radicals were observed in the atmosphere at peak mixing ratios of 350 ppt. Long-term observation of NO3 shows that 24-h averages in rural air masses are closer to a few ppt. Nevertheless, the NO3 radical plays an important role in the non-photochemical conversion of NOx to HNO3. Also, NO3 is a strong oxidizing agent and initiates the night-time removal of atmospheric trace species such as olefins, aromatic hydrocarbons, and organic sulfur compounds. Finally, night-time peroxy radical production and release of reactive halogen species from sea salt aerosol might be initiated by NO3 reactions. 相似文献

In Support Vector Machines (SVMs), the solution of the classification problem is characterized by a (convex) quadratic programming (QP) problem. In a modified version of SVMs, called Least Squares SVM classifiers (LS-SVMs), a least squares cost function is proposed so as to obtain a linear set of equations in the dual space. While the SVM classifier has a large margin interpretation, the LS-SVM formulation is related in this paper to a ridge regression approach for classification with binary targets and to Fisher's linear discriminant analysis in the feature space. Multiclass categorization problems are represented by a set of binary classifiers using different output coding schemes. While regularization is used to control the effective number of parameters of the LS-SVM classifier, the sparseness property of SVMs is lost due to the choice of the 2-norm. Sparseness can be imposed in a second stage by gradually pruning the support value spectrum and optimizing the hyperparameters during the sparse approximation procedure. In this paper, twenty public domain benchmark datasets are used to evaluate the test set performance of LS-SVM classifiers with linear, polynomial and radial basis function (RBF) kernels. Both the SVM and LS-SVM classifier with RBF kernel in combination with standard cross-validation procedures for hyperparameter selection achieve comparable test set performances. These SVM and LS-SVM performances are consistently very good when compared to a variety of methods described in the literature including decision tree based algorithms, statistical algorithms and instance based learning methods. A novel three-phase solid-state power factor compensation scheme is presented and analyzed. This scheme employs a PWM voltage-source inverter and has two important features. First, it can maintain a near-unity mains input power factor without sensing and computing the associated reactive power component, and second, it can substantially reduce any line current harmonics generated by nonlinear types of load. In this paper we describe how three simple observations can be used in order to obtain an efficient algorithm for the computer analysis of ideal switched-capacitor circuits. the resulting algorithm is linear in the number of phases. the first observation uses the structure of the r-domain MNA-matrix to come up with a new LU-decomposition scheme which is gradual per timeslot. the second observation allows a great reduction in size of the z-domain MNA-matrix by a matrix compaction algorithm which also operates gradually per timeslot and which can be interleaved with the first gradual LU-decomposition process. This leads to a small matrix which can then be used for a time- and direct frequency-domain analysis. Third, the computations of transfer functions, aliasing functions and sensitivities can be optimized by applying appropriate excitations and making appropriate combinations of the terms in the expressions. These algorithms have been implemented in the SC-analysis program DIANA.SC. the usefulness and efficiency of the program is then illustrated with some examples. 相似文献
