Satellite remote sensing has the potential to contribute to plant phenology monitoring at spatial and temporal scales relevant for regional and global scale studies. Historically, temporal composites of satellite data, ranging from 8 days to 16 days, have been used as a starting point for satellite-derived phenology data sets. In this study we assess how the temporal resolution of such composites affects the estimation of the start of season (SOS) by: 1) calibrating a relationship between satellite derived SOS with in situ leaf unfolding (LU) of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) across Canada and 2) quantifying the sensitivity of calibrated satellite SOS estimates and trends, over Canadian broadleaf forests, to the temporal resolution of NDVI data. SOS estimates and trends derived from daily NDVI data were compared to SOS estimates and trends derived from multiday NDVI composites that retain the exact date of the maximum NDVI value or that assume the midpoint of the multiday interval as the observation date. In situ observations of LU dates were acquired from the PlantWatch Canada network. A new Canadian database of cloud and snow screened daily 1-km resolution National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration advanced very high resolution radiometer surface reflectance images was used as input satellite data. The mean absolute errors of SOS dates with respect to in situ LU dates ranged between 13 and 40 days. SOS estimates from NDVI composites that retain the exact date of the maximum NDVI value had smaller errors (~ 13 to 20 days). The sensitivity analysis reinforced these findings: SOS estimates from NDVI composites that use the exact date had smaller absolute deviations from the LU date (0 to − 5 days) than the SOS estimates from NDVI composites that use the midpoint (− 2 to − 27 days). The SOS trends between 1985 and 2007 were not sensitive to the temporal resolution or compositing methods. However, SOS trends at individual ecozones showed significant differences with the SOS trends from daily NDVI data (Taiga plains and the Pacific maritime zones). Overall, our results suggest that satellite based estimates of vegetation green-up dates should preferably use sub-sampled NDVI composites that include the exact observation date of the maximum NDVI to minimize errors in both, SOS estimates and SOS trend analyses. For trend analyses alone, any of the compositing methods could be used, preferably with composite intervals of less than 28 days. This is an important finding, as it suggests that existing long-term 10-day or 15-day NDVI composites could be used for SOS trend analyses over broadleaf forests in Canada or similar areas. Future studies will take advantage of the growing in situ phenology networks to improve the validation of satellite derived green-up dates.  相似文献

Although recent experimental work indicates that self-distancing facilitates adaptive self-reflection, it remains unclear (a) whether spontaneous self-distancing leads to similar adaptive outcomes, (b) how spontaneous self-distancing relates to avoidance, and (c) how this strategy impacts interpersonal behavior. Three studies examined these issues demonstrating that the more participants spontaneously self-distanced while reflecting on negative memories, the less emotional (Studies 1–3) and cardiovascular (Study 2) reactivity they displayed in the short term. Spontaneous self-distancing was also associated with lower emotional reactivity and intrusive ideation over time (Study 1). The negative association between spontaneous self-distancing and emotional reactivity was mediated by how participants construed their experience (i.e., less recounting relative to reconstruing) rather than avoidance (Studies 1–2). In addition, spontaneous self-distancing was associated with more problem-solving behavior and less reciprocation of negativity during conflicts among couples in ongoing relationships (Study 3). Although spontaneous self-distancing was empirically related to trait rumination, it explained unique variance in predicting key outcomes. Although children and adolescents vary in their chronic tendencies to adaptively versus maladaptively reflect over negative feelings, the psychological mechanisms underlying these different types of self-reflection among youngsters are unknown. We addressed this issue in the present research by examining the role that self-distancing plays in distinguishing adaptive versus maladaptive self-reflection among an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse sample of fifth-grade public schoolchildren. Children were randomly assigned to analyze their feelings surrounding a recent anger-related interpersonal experience from either a self-immersed or self-distanced perspective. They then rated their negative affect and described in writing the stream of thoughts they experienced when they analyzed their feelings. Children's stream-of-thought essays were content analyzed for the presence of recounting statements, reconstruing statements, and blame attributions. Path analyses indicated that children who analyzed their feelings from a self-distanced perspective focused significantly less on recounting the “hot,” emotionally arousing features of their memory (i.e., what happened to me?) and relatively more on reconstruing their experience. This shift in thought content—less recounting and more reconstruing—led children in the self-distanced group to blame the other person involved in their recalled experience significantly less, which in turn led them to display significantly lower levels of emotional reactivity. These findings help delineate the psychological mechanisms that distinguish adaptive versus maladaptive forms of self-reflection over anger experiences in children. Status epilepticus is an epileptic seizure that lasts at least 30 minutes or is repeated at sufficiently brief intervals to produce a continued epileptic condition lasting a total of 30 minutes without the patient fully regaining consciousness. Various combinations of anticonvulsant agents, including benzodiazepines, phenytoin, and phenobarbital, have been used to manage this condition. However, at least 9% of patients with generalized convulsive status epilepticus do not respond to conventional first-line agents, and additional intervention is required. Refractory status epilepticus refers to sustained seizures that do not respond to initial drug therapy and persist longer than 60 minutes. Reports on the response to first- and second-line agents suggest that the incidence of refractory status epilepticus is between 2000 and 6000 cases per year in the United States. Refractory status epilepticus is a major medical and neurologic emergency that requires immediate treatment to avoid significant morbidity and mortality. The anticonvulsive agent midazolam has proved to be effective, well tolerated, and fast acting when used to treat refractory status epilepticus in both adults and children. Its pharmacodynamic effects can be seen within 1 to 5 minutes of administration, and its anticonvulsive effects are apparent as early as 5 to 15 minutes after administration. This article reviews the pharmacology of midazolam and recent clinical reports on the drug's tolerability and effectiveness in the treatment of patients with refractory status epilepticus.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the nitrate content of human milk is influenced by maternal ingestion of water containing elevated nitrate levels. DESIGN: Prospective, nonrandomized, volunteer study. SETTING: Clinical Research Center at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. PATIENTS: Twenty healthy lactating women with infants older than 6 months. INTERVENTIONS: The mothers were asked to consume a minimum of 1500 mL of water containing 0 mg of nitrate per liter on day 1, 45 mg on day 2, and 100 mg on day 3 in addition to consuming and recording their dietary intake. Breast-feeding was permitted during days 1 and 2, but milk was expressed on day 3 and the infants were given alternate food sources. After each 24-hour study day, maternal urine and milk samples were collected and frozen. A modified cadmium column reduction method was used to determine spot urinary and milk nitrate content. RESULTS: The meant total nitrate intake from diet and water on days 1,2, and 3, respectively, was 46.6, 168.1, and 272.0 mg. Spot urine nitrate content on days 1, 2, and 3, respectively, was 36.0, 66.0, and 84.0 mg. Nitrate concentration of human milk on days 1,2, and 3, respectively, was 4.4, 5.1 and 5.2 mg/L. CONCLUSION: Women who consume water with a nitrate concentration of 100 mg/L or less do not produce milk with elevated nitrate levels.  相似文献

The ISO 14000 is likely to become the international standard for environmental management. At present, it is an evolving series of individual voluntary standards and guideline reference documents that provide business management with the structure for managing environmental impacts. These encompass environmental management systems, environmental audits, eco-labeling, environmental performance evaluations, life-cycle assessment, and environmental aspects in product standards. The authors present the rationale for the ISO 14000 and the steps in its evolution so far, as well as its present provisions and their implications and its position with regard to regulatory agencies. Emil Ginter Life expectancy is about five to seven years less in Central European countries than in comparable countries in Western Europe. Environmental and occupational health risk factors, along with the socioeconomic and political conditions that have prevailed in this region for the past 40 years, are suspected contributing factors to this condition. The initial impression among observers was that environmental pollution by industry was the primary source of contamination leading to human health effects. Current thinking by the authors recognizes that combinations of personal habits, local environmental emissions (home heating), and occupational risk factors are more likely to be influencing the health of this region, particularly in rural areas. A predictive model for standard mortality rates determined that only three potential risk factors were statistically significant: consumption of alcoholic beverages, consumption of citrus fruits, and consumption of cereals. Additional emphasis should be placed on defining risk factors in rural areas of Central Europe, and designing intervention strategies to address these factors.  相似文献

Abstract

The extended linear approximation [1] is applied to defocused imaging of semi-transparent edges. The approximated intensity distributions are given and the influence of the following parameters are studied: edge transparency and phase shift, coherence parameter and defocusing. For an opaque edge and a phase edge approximated intensity curves are compared to curves obtained by the exact calculation with the ‘bilinear transfer function’. It is shown that characteristic effects of the image intensity can be referred to the two transfer functions of the extended linear approximation and that it is possible to separate the influence of the object and the system, which is the principal advantage of the use of transfer functions.  相似文献

The purpose of the Commercial Components Initiative-Ground Benign Systems was to determine if commercial off-the-shelf PEM (plastic-encapsulated microcircuits) are suitable for use in ground-benign, dynamically-fixed military electronic systems. If so, they could replace the more expensive components presently specified by DoD (US Dept. of Defense), resulting in appreciable life-cycle cost savings. At issue is whether the components produced for the commercial industry are reliable and durable enough to withstand the environments and life expectancies of military systems. Reliability was not formally proven. A more practical informal reliability test for this project, which DSD dubbed Run for Reliability, was to install the PCB in the system and let the operational hours accrue beyond the subsystem and Signal Processor lifetime allocations.
