Previous studies demonstrated that crack cutting bonded cement-based repairs is highly detrimental to the durability of such applications. Laboratory tests and field experience showed that fibre reinforcement allowing the control of the crack opening and assuring the structural continuity is a solution to enhance the durability of bonded cement-based repairs. In other respect, recent work pointed out that the use of rubber aggregates obtained from grinding end-of-life tyres is a suitable solution to improve the strain capacity of cement-based materials. The present contribution focuses on the synergetic effect of rubber aggregate incorporation and of fibre reinforcement from the point of view of the use of the composite in the repair work application.  相似文献

The effective removal of ionic pollutants from contaminated water using negatively charged nanofiltration membranes is demonstrated. Block copolymers comprising polystyrene (PS) and partially hydrogenated polyisoprene (hPI) were synthesized by varying chain architectures. A one step procedure of cross-linking (hPI blocks) and sulfonation reactions (PS chains) was then carried out, which was revealed as an effective method to enhance mechanical integrity of membranes while hydrophilic sulfonated chains remain intact. In particular, the control of chain architecture allows us to create a synergetic effect on optimizing charge densities of the membrane, water permeability, and mechanical integrity under water purification conditions. The best performing membrane can almost completely (>99%) reject various divalent cations and also show NO(3)(-) rejection > 85% and Na(+) rejection > 87%. Well defined nanostructures (tens of nanometers) as well as the periodically arranged water domains (a few nanometers) within hydrophilic phases of the hydrated membranes were confirmed by in situ neutron scattering experiments.  相似文献

Objective: To describe the characteristics of the Chinese subjects who utilised the first telephone smoking cessation service in Hong Kong, and to evaluate its effectiveness.

Methods: The Quitline provided Hong Kong residents with free telephone smoking cessation services which was publicised through a press conference, media reports, pamphlets, and posters at public and private hospitals and clinics. Callers who completed an initial interview from 13 December 2000 to 31 May 2002 were included. Smokers were interviewed using a structured record sheet and provided with stage matched counselling. A follow up interview was carried out after six months. Analysis was conducted by intention-to-treat.

Results: Of the 1120 callers who completed initial assessments, 1047 were current smokers and 872 consented to follow ups. Compared to the general smoking population, the Quitline attracted more of those who were female, younger, single, unemployed, higher educated, smoking more than 20 cigarettes per day, and those with quitting experience. At six months, 12% (95% confidence interval 10% to 15%) of the participants reported that they had not smoked a cigarette for the past seven days. A stepwise logistic regression model showed that the use of nicotine replacement therapy at the present attempt to quit, having made one or more serious attempts to quit in the past, perceiving less difficulties in quitting, and smoking the first cigarette at age 15 years or above were significant predictors of quitting.

Conclusion: This first Quitline in Asia appears to be acceptable to Chinese smokers, with quit rate comparable to those of better funded Quitlines in the West. A low cost Quitline is a promising model for smoking cessation services in the East.

pH-stating is a common technique for monitoring kinetics of various biochemical reactions that involve the generation of hydrogen or hydroxyl ions. In this work, we describe a reagentless electrochemical micro-pH-stat where the titrant of acid or base is produced by water electrolysis on the rotating sample system (RSS) platform. RSS originated from the authors' laboratory as a convective platform to support different analytical techniques in microliter-sized samples. As water electrolysis induces no volume change and the current that generates the reagent can be precisely measured even at low levels, very small samples in the microliter range become accessible for pH-stating: a reduction of more than an order of magnitude in specimen size relative to the most sensitive conventional methods. Nearly 100% current efficiency has been achieved with this system using a 250 microm Pt minidisc working electrode for electrolysis. The developed micro-pH-stat has been validated by the determination of the activity of erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase as a function of substrate concentration and pH. The optimal pH and activity profile obtained are in good agreement with those determined with standard techniques. The micro-pH-stat has the potential for applications for enzyme assays, reagentless pH control, acidity/alkalinity, and buffer capacity measurements in very small samples of biomedical and environmental origin.  相似文献

Background: Numerous studies have concluded that secondhand smoke (SHS) is harmful to non-smokers but controversy persists regarding its effects on smokers. The impact of SHS exposure on the acute respiratory health of current active smokers was examined using a cross sectional design. Methods: 9923 uniformed staff in the Hong Kong Police Force completed a standardised questionnaire on current and past smoking, SHS exposure at home and at work, acute respiratory symptoms, and recent physician consultation. 3999 male current smokers were included in the analysis. Results: About 5% of the smokers were exposed to SHS at home only, 53% were exposed at work only, and 30% were exposed both at home and at work. The prevalence ratios for respiratory symptoms (throat and nasal problems, cough, phlegm, and wheeze), physician consultation, and self medication were higher for those who were exposed to SHS at home or at work. The odds ratios of reporting one or more respiratory symptoms, for SHS exposures at home or at work, were 1.33 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.12 to 1.59) and 1.66 (95% CI 1.36 to 2.02) respectively, after adjusting for age, marital status, education, rank and duties, exposure to self perceived dusty or polluted environment in previous job, and total dose of active smoking. The adjusted odds ratios showed significant positive dose–response gradients with SHS exposure at home, at work, and at both places combined. Conclusions: SHS exposure is strongly associated with increased acute respiratory symptoms and recent outpatient service utilisation in current smokers. If the association is causal, public health action to limit SHS exposure could also benefit smokers.  相似文献

From a general theory of drying granular porous media, we have constructed a simplified theory that consists of a set of coupled, volume-averaged transport equations for the temperature and the saturation. The theory incorporates the liquid and vapor phase continuity equations, combines the liquid, solid and vapor phase thermal energy equations into a single temperature equation and makes use of Darcy's law for the liquid phase to account for moisture transport owing to capillary action. By purely qualitative reasoning, one can show that combined heat and mass transfer theories of drying cannot provide a complete theoretical explanation of drying phenomena and a detailed comparison between theory and experiment supports this point of view. Speculation concerning the logical course of subsequent theoretical studies is provided.  相似文献

A superconducting magnet was designed and fabricated for an 18 GHz ECR ion∕photon source, which will be installed at National Fusion Research Institute (NFRI) in South Korea. The magnetic system consists of a set of four superconducting coils for axial mirror field and 36 pieces of permanent magnets for hexapolar field. The superconducting coils with a cryocooler (1.5 W @ 4.2 K) allow one to reach peak mirror fields of 2.2 T in the injection and those of 1.5 T in the extraction regions on the source axis, and the resultant hexapolar field gives 1.35 T on the plasma chamber wall. The unbalanced magnetic force between the coils and surrounding yoke has been minimized to 16 ton by a coil arrangement and their electrical connection, and then was successfully suspended by 12 strong thermal insulating supports made of large numbers of carbon fibers. In order to block radiative thermal losses, multilayer thermal insulations are covered on the coil windings as well as 40-K aluminum thermal shield. Also new schemes of quench detection and safety system (coil divisions, quench detection coils, and heaters) were employed. For impregnation of the windings a special epoxy has been selected and treated to have a higher breaking strength and a higher thermal conductivity, which enables the superconductors to be uniformly and rapidly cooled down or heated during a quench.  相似文献
