Protecting plant resources from harmful organisms that can spread internationally is a major challenge for plant protection organisations. Natural scientists and economists have methods that contribute to informing and supporting government decision makers in plant health authorities, who also need to account for stakeholders’ views when developing policy and regulations to mitigate plant pest risks. Increasingly plant protection authorities seek to develop integrated decision making through economists and scientists working within an interdisciplinary framework. In this special section of Food Security we introduce a series of papers presented at an international conference that brought together natural scientists, economists, industry representatives and plant health policy makers to report the state of the art and explore the direction and future research needs for such interdisciplinary working to deliver rational plant protection policy and improved food security for the 21st Century. The collection of papers combine contributions from leading academics and influential policy makers and provides cohesive international perspectives on the use of science and economics, as well as their integration, to progress the development of integrated multi-disciplinary plant health policy making around the world. Using a modified version of the world café method during a conference workshop activity, participants identified greater international co-operation as a key mechanism that would reduce international plant health risks. Specifically, co-operation over analysis among stakeholders and along supply chains were seen as key issues.  相似文献

Introduction     
The Internet is no longer ‘new technology’ to many charities, both in the UK and beyond. Some campaigning charities, members of the Association for Progressive Communications, have been using the Internet since the mid‐1980s to co‐ordinate activity internationally. For many international aid and development charities, e‐mail has long been a reliable method of communicating with partner organisations overseas in countries which have poor telecommunications infrastructures. Yet there remains considerable debate amongst UK charities about just what the Internet can offer. Many charities seem to believe that it will indeed offer opportunities and advantages, but that these will not become evident for a period of several years. Others are talcing a less conservative attitude and are deliberately testing the various opportunities they can see. This paper summarises UK charities’ efforts at using the Internet to raise funds. It explains the significance of the Internet to charities, arguing that charities should already have begun to test its use in some ways. It summarises the use of the Internet in the UK, demonstrating that it is a significant medium, used by many different people, that charities can no longer ignore. It lists the various methods of fundraising used by UK charities, and it looks at some of the threats that it represents to charities.  相似文献

This work was done to demonstrate the opportunities provided by application of meta-analysis in plant pathology. It was a case study used to determine the effectiveness of foliar fungicides in minimising yield loss from a complex of yellow spot (Pyrenophora tritici-repentis) and septoria nodorum blotch (Stagonospora nodorum, teleomorph: Phaeosphaeria nodorum) (YS-SNB disease complex) on wheat in the northern grain-belt of Western Australia. Forty-seven datasets of experimental results from 14 growing seasons, using 18 varieties sprayed one to three times, predominantly with tebuconazole or propiconazole fungicides, were analysed. Across the datasets, the wheat yield gain from fungicide application was 297 kg ha?1 with a 95 % confidence interval of 11.6 kg ha?1. Significant yield gains resulted from single or multiple applications of fungicides. Both propiconazole and tebuconazole, increased yield of wheat affected by the YS–SNB disease complex, with yield gain from propiconazole being greater than that from tebuconazole. Yield response varied significantly among crop growing seasons. Meta-analysis was able to aggregate a large number of experimental results and answer important questions related to the variables that influenced those results; in this case the effectiveness of fungicides in minimising yield loss from the YS-SNB disease complex on wheat. It also identified areas where further research needs to be done. It is concluded that meta-analysis has the potential to contribute to similar analyses in other crop disease systems.  相似文献

In many instances brewhouse performance cannot be predicted from a finished malt specification. This is particularly so for factors such as lautering, yeast performance, filtration and head character. There are two aspects involved in improving the brewing performance of malt. Firstly, an understanding of the malt characteristics affecting particular aspects of the brewing process and secondly an understanding of how the malting process affects or can be controlled to optimise these characteristics and thus their performance. In this work the relationship between barley variety, steeping pattern, malt quality and brewing performance is investigated. Six different barley varieties were micromalted in a Seeger micromalting unit under four different steeping regimes. Sub-samples were taken at intervals during steeping for enzyme analysis and measurement of water distribution. Following steeping, the samples were germinated and kilned using standard micromalting conditions. Finished malts were analysed by standard EBC methods for routine malt quality parameters including apparent attenuation limit. Worts were tested for total β-glucan content, β-glucan molecular weight distribution, filter plugging potential and carbohydrate levels. A sub set of malt samples were then micro-brewed and tested for β-glucan molecular weight (MW) distribution, beer filterability and foam stability.  相似文献

Negative priming—the slowing of a response to an item that was recently ignored—was investigated in three groups: obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) checkers, OCD noncheckers, and nonclinical control participants. All groups performed both a standard negative priming task, selecting targets based on a perceptual feature (i.e., color), and a modified negative priming task, selecting targets based on a semantic feature (i.e., referent size). All three groups demonstrated significant negative priming in both tasks, although the negative priming was much larger in the novel, semantic task than in the common perceptual one. The findings suggest that patients with OCD do not demonstrate impairments in negative priming, contrary to earlier claims (Enright & Beech, 1990, 1993a, 1993b; Enright, Beech, & Claridge, 1995). An esterase (carboxylic acid hydrolase EC 3 1.1.1.) has been prepared from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This esterase is active at pH 4.4 and, though it is unstable in solution, it can be maintained in an active form either by lyophilization or by coupling to an affinity gel. At pH 4.4, yeast esterase can hydrolyse between 20 and 40% of the esters commonly present in beer, and it is capable of synthesizing ethyl acetate from ethanol and acetic acid in a simple buffered solution without the provision of a co-factor. Different yeast strains yield different amounts of esterase, and there appears to be a positive correlation between the ability of the yeast to form esterase and the level of esters present in fermentations accomplished by that yeast.  相似文献

We present the software implementation of The OECD POV & LRTP Screening Tool (The Tool) that is used to assess the environmental hazard of organic chemicals using metrics of overall persistence (POV) and long-range transport potential (LRTP). The Tool is designed to support decision making for chemical management and includes features that are recommended by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) expert group on multimedia modeling. The Tool is useful for screening the environmental hazard potential of non-ionizing organic chemicals whose environmental partitioning can be described by absorptive capacities of environmental media estimated from partitioning between air, water and octanol in the laboratory. The software includes data storage functionality, and a user interface that is designed to facilitate simple data input and straightforward interpretation of the model results. The effect of uncertainties in input properties describing chemicals can be assessed with a Monte Carlo analysis. The software is evaluated and illustrated by comparing results from The Tool with those from other models and by evaluating four substances that are candidates for regulation or ban under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.  相似文献
