Coordinate-Based Evaluation of Two Dimensional Artefact Calibration Value as the Reference Standards for Coordinate Measuring Machines

Two dimensional standards are important materials which are used in the calibration and the verification of coordinate measuring machines. In several countries, the national metrology institutes or accredit laboratories provide the calibration services of the two dimensional standards such as ball plates, hole plates and grid plates. The metrological equivalence of the measurement standards among the calibration providers is validated through the key comparison program. In the previous key comparison for a ball plate and a hole plate, the equivalences among the participants’ calibration results were verified on the distances between the No. 1 ball/hole (i.e., the origins of the workpiece coordinates) and other balls/holes on the plates respectively. The essential measurands of the two dimensional standards are the coordinates of the feature points, however, the measurement equivalences on them have not been verified. In this study, the authors propose the coordinates-based evaluation of the reference values and their uncertainty in two dimensional standard calibration comparison.     

Carbon radicals generated by solid polymers: Electron spin resonance spectroscopy for detection of species in water

Radicals generated in plastic medical devices (solid phase) by γ-rays or electron-beam irradiation during sterilization are known to cause oxidation of protein drugs, resulting in a loss or reduction in drug efficacy. The generation of radical species in water by the radical species in solid polymers has not been proved. Using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy, we confirm the generation of new radicals in water by γ-ray irradiated cyclic olefin polymers (COP). ESR measurements are obtained using 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPOL) as a spin probe and 5-(2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propoxycyclophosphoryl)-5-methyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide (CYPMPO) as a spin trap, in which the irradiated COP was immersed. The ESR signals indicate the TEMPOL radicals decline over time, suggesting the generation of new radicals. Conversely, the characteristic ESR signals of the adduct formed by the reaction between CYPMPO and the hydroxyl radical are observed. Thus, hydroxyl radicals are generated because of the migration of the radicals from COP to water. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2020 , 137, 48604.

Multiple evaluations of the removal of pollutants in road runoff by soil infiltration

Groundwater replenishment by infiltration of road runoff is expected to be a promising option for ensuring a sustainable urban water cycle. In this study, we performed a soil infiltration column test using artificial road runoff equivalent to approximately 11-12 years of rainfall to evaluate the removal of pollutants by using various chemical analyses and bioassay tests. These results indicated that soil infiltration treatment works effectively to remove most of the pollutants such as organic matter (chemical oxygen demand (CODMn) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC)), P species, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), numerous heavy metals and oestrogenic activities. Bioassay tests, including algal growth inhibition test, Microtox and mutagen formation potential (MFP) test, also revealed effective removal of toxicities by the soils. However, limited amounts of NO3, Mn, Ni, alkaline earth metals, perfluorooctane sulphonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctane sulphonamide (FOSA) were removed by the soils and they possibly reach the groundwater and cause contamination.

Palladium‐Catalyzed Three‐Component Reaction of 3‐(Tri‐n‐ butylstannyl)allyl Acetates,Aldehydes, and Triorganoboranes: An Alternative to the Carbonyl Allylation Using α,γ‐Substituted Allylic Tin Reagents

A three‐component reaction of 3‐(tri‐n‐butylstannyl)allyl acetates, aldehydes, and triorganoboranes in the presence of a palladium‐Xantphos catalyst system predominately gave (E)‐anti‐homoallylic alcohols with high diastereoselectivity and good to high levels of alkene stereocontrol. An efficient chirality transfer was observed when an enantioenriched substrate was employed. The reaction was initiated by the formation of an allylic gem‐palladium/stannyl intermediate, which subsequently underwent allylation of the aldehyde by an allyltributyltin followed by a coupling reaction of the in‐situ‐generated (E)‐vinylpalladium acetate with the triorganoborane.

     

Electromagnetic silicon MEMS resonator

We have fabricated a silicon MEMS resonator aiming at multimodal sensors, and evaluated vibration characteristics by electromagnetic drive and induced electromotive force detection. The resonance frequency of the driving voltage of 0.6 Vpp shows torsional vibration of approximately 87 kHz, and the resonance frequency is shifted toward the low‐frequency side as the driving voltage increases. Resonance characteristics due to temperature change and film stress were evaluated.
