Indigenous community members along the Slave River in Canada have voiced their concerns for the health of ecosystems under pressure from resource extraction, hydroelectric development and global climate change. Nextel? 610 alumina fiber tows were heat‐treated at 1100°C–1500°C for 1 to 100 h in air. Tensile strengths and Weibull moduli were measured for 30 filaments after each heat‐treatment. 3‐D grain size and orientation distributions were described using oblate ellipsoids. The number of grains in a 1 inch gauge length and grains with the largest major and minor ellipsoid‐axes were determined from these distributions. The grain with the largest KEFF for mixed‐mode fracture was also determined, using the maximum energy release rate criteria from grain‐size and orientation distributions. Grain‐size dependence of tensile strength and Weibull modulus was evaluated. Strength had no obvious dependence on grain size for fibers with average major‐axes smaller than 0.25 μm. For fibers with larger grains, grain‐size dependence may involve flaws originating from clumps of grains, rather than a single grain. Possible relationships between strength and grain‐size and other causes of strength degradation after heat‐treatment are discussed. 相似文献

Understanding patterns of fish movement in large lake ecosystems is essential for determining appropriate management actions as differences in movement behaviour can influence life history traits such as growth and survival. Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada supports the 2nd largest walleye (Sander vitreus) commercial fishery in North America. We used mark-recapture models to determine movement and estimate survival of walleye between basins of Lake Winnipeg in historical and contemporary contexts, comparing a tag-recovery study completed historically during 1974–1977 with a contemporary (2017–2019) acoustic telemetry study. Mark-recapture models revealed comparably low but detectable annual transitions between basins from historical (0.3–1.2%) and contemporary datasets (7–8.5%). Historically, fish > 300 mm more frequently moved in a south to north direction. Contemporary estimates suggest similar length-based directionality in that fish > 350 mm were always more likely to move in a south-north direction. Contemporary annual survival derived from mark-recapture models ranged between 27 and 45% and 64.3% when derived from catch curve analysis, while independently derived annual historical survival estimates ranged between 50 and 69% and 45.5% from catch curve analysis. Using the contemporary dataset, we also observed seasonal variation in movement and survival between basins, with the greatest movement across the lake occurring during the fall. Our results demonstrate a persisting pattern of low but measurable movement, suggesting between basin movement is not unusual for Lake Winnipeg. Further, low walleye survival rates reported here for the two time periods studied, support recent management actions to reduce fishing pressure across the lake. 相似文献

Many studies use the number of fish meals as an estimate of Hg intake, although fish Hg concentrations, even within the same species, can greatly vary. Furthermore, most freshwater advisories only refer to local catch, while market fish advisories only focus on market fish, although both can contribute to Hg body burden. The present study, carried out in lakeside communities from 2 ecosystems in Quebec, Canada, sought to (i) estimate Hg intake from local freshwater sources, hunted waterfowl and market fish and seafood, and (ii) examine the relations between fish consumption, estimated Hg intake and biomarkers of exposure. A total of 238 adults (18-74 years), who had consumed local catch within the past three months, responded to an extensive interview-administered fish and waterfowl frequency questionnaire. Anthropometric measures were taken and a self-administered questionnaire was used to obtain socio-demographic information. Hg intake was estimated as µg Hg/kg body weight/day. Blood and hair samples were analyzed for Hg content. Results showed that persons from one ecosystem ate significantly more fish compared to those from the other (median: 52.1 g/day vs 38.9 g/day), but presented significantly lower concentrations of hair Hg (median: 448.0 ng/g vs 730.5 ng/g), blood organic Hg (median: 1.1 µg/L vs 3.4 µg/L) and inorganic Hg (median: 0.4 µg/L vs 0.8 µg/L). Median daily total Hg intake was 0.080 µg/kg bw/day for the former community and 0.141 µg/kg bw/day for the latter. Overall, 59.5% from the first ecosystem and 41.0% from the other, exceeded the US EPA RfD (0.1 µg/kg bw/day), while 13.2% and 6.0%, respectively, exceeded the Canadian tolerable daily intake (0.47 µg/kg bw/day) for adults. For the two groups, freshwater fish consumption frequency, but not total fish, was positively associated with bioindicators of Hg while estimated Hg intake from freshwater catch as well as from total fish consumption were positively related to Hg biomarkers. There was a positive relation between consumption and estimated Hg intake from freshwater fish and blood inorganic Hg. These findings indicate that the number of fish can be a poor surrogate for Hg exposure. The differences observed here for Hg intake and exposure reflect ecosystem disparities in fish diversity and Hg bioaccumulation. Studies and advisories need to consider Hg fish concentrations and fish-eating patterns in different ecosystems, as well as the contribution of market fish. The relation between fish consumption and inorganic Hg exposure, reported as well in other studies, needs to be further investigated. 相似文献

Weak-anion exchange chromatography was used to explore the temporal variability in the speciation of dissolved P in the surface layer of a eutrophic reservoir. Authentic free ortho-P ion was the most common form of P on three of the five sampling occasions-including during a bloom of the green algae Botryococcus braunii indicating that the bloom was not P limited. Conversely, the absence of authentic ortho-P during a bloom of the dinoflagellate Ceratium hirundinella suggested the bloom was either P limited or co-limited. The zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha, is a major biofouling pest of water treatment works, irrigation systems and power stations in Europe and North America. This paper documents current problems associated with zebra mussels in English waterworks. Questionnaires and manual surveys conducted between 2001 and 2003 have revealed that over 30 water treatment works in England suffer problems associated with zebra mussels. Hundreds of tonnes of mussels are being removed each year from raw water intakes, pipelines and reservoirs. Problems have increased in. the last five years, due to a spread in the range of zebra mussels around England and the cessation of chemical treatment at the intakes of many treatment facilities during the 1990s. The importance of taking control of zebra mussels into account in planning new water supply schemes is highlighted. 相似文献
