Glycaemic response of pseudocereal-based gluten-free food products: a review

Rapid digestion and absorption of carbohydrates have become a health issue (high glycaemic index, GI), which can be a matter of greater concern when consumed in large quantities. Depending upon the influence of carbohydrates on the blood sugar levels, GI classifies carbohydrates (on a scale of 100) as low (<55), medium (55–70) and high (>70) GI foods. Among the pseudocereals, chia seed possesses relatively lower GI (28.53), as compared to buckwheat (52.35), amaranth (47.65) and quinoa (61.50). Consumers now prefer foods with a high GI over the ones with low GI to prevent various metabolic alterations. Celiac disease is a lifelong disorder prevalent worldwide and can only be controlled by following a strict lifelong gluten-free diet. Therefore, pseudocereals could be a potential alternate for low GI food and developing gluten-free food products, including bread, cookies, noodles and pasta. This review synthesises the recently published literatures on pseudocereals as a lowering GI and healthy food option. This review also gives insights into developing pseudocereals as a potential and novel ingredient for gluten-free food applications and the latest research conducted worldwide.     

Analytical approach on magnetohydrodynamic Casson fluid flow past a stretching sheet via Adomian decomposition method

Flow phenomena of three-dimensional conducting Casson fluid through a stretching sheet are proposed in the present investigation with the impact of the magnetic parameter in a permeable medium. The adaptation of particular transformations is useful to modify the governing equations into their nondimensional as well as the ordinary form. However, these transformed equations are nonlinear and approximate analytical methods for the solution of the complex form of governing equations. In particular, the Adomian decomposition method is proposed for the solution. The behavior of several variables, such as the magnetic and porous matrix, on the flow profile as well as the rate of shear stress, are discussed via graphs and tables. The conformity of the current result with the earlier study shows a road map for further investigation. The major concluding remarks are; the retardation in the velocity distribution is rendered due to an increase in the Casson parameter moreover, the Casson parameter favors in reducing the rate of shear stress coefficient in magnitude.     

An Adaptive Transmission Mode Selection Scheme for Cellular Underlaid D2D Communication

In this paper, we propose to use Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) optimization to solve the joint mode selection, channel assignment, and power allocation (JMSCPA) problem to maximize system throughput and spectral efficiency. JMSCPA is a problem where the allocation of channel and power depends on the mode selection. Such problems require two step solution and are called bi-level optimization problems. As bi-level optimization increases the complexity and computational time, we propose a modified version of single-level ABC algorithm aided with the adaptive transmission mode selection algorithm to allocate the cellular, reuse, and dedicated modes to the DUs along with channel and power allocation based on the network traffic load scenarios. A single variable, represented by the users (CUs and DUs) is used to allocate mode selection, and channel allocation to solve the JMSCPA problem, leading to a simpler solution with faster convergence, and significant reduction in the computational complexity which scales linearly with the number of users. Further, the proposed solution avoids premature stagnation of conventional ABC into local minima by incorporating a modification in its update procedure. The efficacy of the ABC-aided approach, as compared to the results reported in the literature, is validated by extensive numerical investigations under different simulation scenarios.

Precipitous weakening of quartz at the α–β phase inversion

Crystalline quartz has long been identified as among the weakest of abundant crustal minerals. This weakness is particularly evident around the α–β phase inversion at 573°C, in which Si–O bonds undergo a displacive structural transformation from trigonal to hexagonal symmetry. Here we present data using indentation testing methodologies that highlight the precipitous extent of the transformational weakening. Although the indentations are localized over relatively small specimen contact areas, the data quantify the essential deformation and fracture properties of quartz in a predominantly (but not exclusively) compressive stress field, at temperatures and pressures pertinent to conditions in the earth's crust.
