Readers' eye movements were monitored as they read sentences containing noun-noun compounds that varied in frequency (e.g., elevator mechanic, mountain lion). The left constituent of the compound was either plausible or implausible as a head noun at the point at which it appeared, whereas the compound as a whole was always plausible. When the head noun analysis of the left constituent was implausible, reading times on this word were inflated, beginning with the first fixation. This finding is consistent with previous demonstrations of very rapid effects of plausibility on eye movements. Compound frequency did not modulate the plausibility effect, and all disruption was resolved by the time readers' eyes moved to the next word. These findings suggest (contra Kennison, 2005) that the parser initially analyzes a singular noun as a head instead of a modifier. In addition, the findings confirm that the very rapid effect of plausibility on eye movements is not due to strategic factors, because in the present experiment, unlike in previous demonstrations, this effect appeared in sentences that were globally plausible. In this brief rejoinder, we respond to Farmer, Monaghan, Misyak, and Christiansen (2011). We argue that the data still do not support the claim that reading time is affected by the phonological typicality of a word for its part of speech. The first observation of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of Tb3+ doped into YBa2Cu3O6 is reported. EPR is used to determine the local symmetry of the rare-earth ion and to study the effect of suppression of high-T c superconductivity by doping. The distance between the lowest singlets of Tb3+ ion 7.1 GHz 0.24 cm–1 and g-factor g 17.9 have been estimated from measurements. Both these parameters are in a good agreement with the corresponding calculated values. No evidence of Tb4+ ions was found.  相似文献

The placement of substrate contacts in epi and non-epi technologies is analyzed in order to control and reduce the substrate noise amplitude and spreading. The choice of small or large substrate contacts or rings for each of the two major technologies is highlighted. Design guidelines for placing substrate contacts so as to improve the noise immunity of digital circuits in mixed-signal smart-power systems are also presented.  相似文献

Competition for attention between 2 written words was investigated by presenting the words briefly in a single stream of distractors (Experiment 1) or in different streams (Experiment 2- 6), using rapid serial visual presentation at 53 ms/item. Stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) was varied from 0 to 213 ms. At all SOAs there was strong competition, but which word was more likely to be reported shifted markedly with SOA. At SOAs in the range of 13-53 ms the second word was more likely to be reported, but at 213 ms, the advantage switched to the first word, as in the attentional blink. A 2-stage competition model of attention is proposed in which attention to a detected target is labile in Stage 1. A computational study of line-focus generation was done using a self-written ray-tracing code and compared to experimental data. Two line-focusing geometries were compared, i.e., either exploiting the sagittal astigmatism of a tilted spherical mirror or using the spherical aberration of an off-axis-illuminated spherical mirror. Line focusing by means of astigmatism or spherical aberration showed identical results as expected for the equivalence of the two frames of reference. The variation of the incidence angle on the target affects the line-focus length, which affects the amplification length such that as long as the irradiance is above the amplification threshold, it is advantageous to have a longer line focus. The amplification threshold is physically dependent on operating parameters and plasma-column conditions and in the present study addresses four possible cases.  相似文献

We determined the energy splitting of the 7F1 multiplet of Eu3+ in EuNiO3 using inelastic neutron scattering. We were able to retrieve accurate values for the second order crystalline electric field parameters, which will allow a more reliable determination of the crystalline electric field potential in the RNiO3 (R=rare earth) series. This is essential for a possible observation of a charge transfer, which is proposed by one of the models describing the observed metal-to-insulator transition in these compounds.  相似文献

Numerical modelling of bulk forming processes has to identify the conditions that may result in unsatisfactory products. In ductile materials, damage may occur with the micro void nucleation at the site of second phase particles and inclusions in the plastic or visco-plastic matrix and then with the micro void growth. In this work an isotropic ductile damage model is extended to load cases with successive tensile and compressive steps and with pure deviatoric stress state. The constitutive equations satisfy the Clausius-Duhem inequality for negative or positive voids volume fraction rate. The constitutive parameters are identified with the Rice and Tracey model modified for a sphere initially filled with a soft or a hard inclusion. Axisymmetric geometries are considered for remote strain fields without distortion. A plane cell and a 3D unit cell are analysed numerically for the deviatoric strain state and various combined deviatoric and volumetric deformations.  相似文献
