Polylactic acid (PLA) is one of the most widely studied renewable and biodegradable polyesters and is expected to replace petrochemical-based synthetic polymers. In this study, we investigated the effect of the alumina volume fraction on the thermal and mechanical properties of polyethylene glycol (PEG)-plasticized PLA. The alumina particles were treated with maleic acid to improve their interaction with the PLA matrix. The field-emission scanning electron microscopy results revealed that the addition of alumina eliminated voids, leading to improved interfacial interactions between the PLA and alumina particles. The thermal conductivity of the neat PLA increased from 0.278 to 0.66?wm?1 k?1 with the addition of 30% alumina, which accounts for 137% increase. The tensile strength and Young's modulus of the neat PLA dropped by 52% and 56%, respectively, on the addition of 15% PEG plasticizer. However, the elongation at break increased from 5.4% to 207%, which was associated with a drop on the glass transition temperature values. The dynamic mechanical analysis results showed a drop in the storage modulus and height of the tan δ peak, revealing the increased flexibility of the composite after the inclusion of the plasticizer. The addition of 30% alumina exhibited a 41.6% increase on the stiffness of the PEG-blended PLA.  相似文献

Spoilage of fruit juice by Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris is characterized by a distinct medicinal or antiseptic off odor attributed to guaiacol, a metabolic by product of the bacterium. Detection of low populations of A. acidoterrestris that would precede sensory detection of guaiacol would enable juice processors to select appropriate processing and storage conditions that would minimize or eliminate spoilage. The objective of this study was to determine the recognition threshold of guaiacol in apple juice by sensory analysis and the population of A. acidoterrestris and incubation time at 21 and 37 degrees C necessary for chemical detection of guaiacol. Commercially sterilized apple juice (pH 3.54 +/- 0.04, 11.3 +/- 0.3 degrees Brix) was inoculated with a five-strain mixture of A. acidoterrestris spores (2.98 log10 CFU/ml) and stored at 21 or 37 degrees C for up to 61 days. Using an experienced sensory panel and the forced-choice ascending concentration method of limits, the best estimate threshold (BET) for recognition of guaiacol added to uninoculated apple juice was 2.23 ppb. Numbers of A. acidoterrestris spores and cells in inoculated juice remained constant during the 61-day storage period; however, the panel detected (P < or = 0.01) guaiacol in juice stored at 37 degrees C within 8 days. At three of four sampling times ranging from 13 to 61 days at which the sensory panel detected (P < or = 0.001) guaiacol, concentrations of 8.1 to 11.4 ppb were detected by chromatographic analysis. The panel detected (P < or = 0.1 to P < or = 0.01) guaiacol in five samples stored at 21 to 37 degrees C for 8 to 61 days in which the compound was not detected by chromatographic analyses. It appears that guaiacol content in apple juice inoculated with A. acidoterrestris is not always correlated with numbers of cells, and the limit of sensitivity of chromatographic quantitation of the compound is higher than the BET.  相似文献

An alternative, rapid, and reproducible method of analysis for perchlorate in selected food products (fruit and vegetable juice, milk, and bottled water) was developed and validated. Improvements over previous methods were achieved by the use of a rugged and inexpensive C18 column, a multi-mode OASIS HLB solid-phase extraction cartridge for sample clean-up, and acetic acid for pH adjustment and protein precipitation. The hydrophobicity of the perchlorate anion gives it good retention and separation characteristics on C18 chromatographic columns. The C18 column allowed for the use of 90% of acetonitrile at a low flow rate (0.3 ml min(-1)), without splitting, and could also be regenerated with organic solvents, unlike an ion-exchange column. Perchlorate levels in selected commercial food samples were: <1.0-2.1 ng g(-1) (fruit and vegetable juices, reported here for the first time), <1.0-5.0 ng g(-1) (milk), and <1.0 ng g(-1) (bottled water).  相似文献

The diesel-driven water pumping systems have a great impact on rural water supply in Ethiopia in past decades due to the lack of access to grid electricity and associated capital intensive nature of grid expansion to rural areas. However, the requirement of diesel generator for frequent maintenance and soaring fuel cost encourages the government and concerned bodies such as NGO to go for most reliable and cost-effective alternatives. In this paper, direct coupled photovoltaic (PV) pumping system has been designed for hypothetical rural village in southern region near Arba Minch (latitude 6.02N, Longitude 37.54E) to show techno-economic feasibility of the technology. The result shows that direct coupled PV pumping system is cost-effective in terms of life cycle cost and technologically feasible for rural water supply by virtue of its very low running cost and high reliability of the component and the system as a whole.  相似文献

Melamine has been used for the adulteration of cereal flours in order to increase their apparent protein content. Crude melamine may contain several by-products, i.e. ammeline, ammelide, and cyanuric acid. The simultaneous analysis of all four chemicals is difficult because of the formation of an insoluble salt between melamine and cyanuric acid. A simple and convenient high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for the detection of the adulteration of cereal flours with all four chemicals is proposed herein. The precipitate formation between melamine and cyanuric acid was prevented by using alkaline conditions (pH 11-12) for both standards preparation and sample extraction. The method uses matrix-matching, which involves the construction of a calibration curve on a blank (negative control) matrix, which is then used for the quantitation of melamine and by-products in adulterated (positive) samples. Matrix-matching compensates for analyte losses during sample preparation, and for matrix effects. The method was successfully applied to wheat, corn, and rice flours, and is expected to be applicable (with some modifications) to soy flour as well. The method allows for the detection of melamine, ammeline, and ammelide at approximately 5 µg g-1, and cyanuric acid at approximately 90 µg g-1 in wheat flour.  相似文献

Information on the rate and pattern of urban expansion is required by urban planners to devise proper urban planning and management policy directions. This study evaluated the dynamics and spatial pattern of Mekelle City’s expansion in the past three decades (1984–2014). Multi-temporal Landsat images and Maximum Likelihood Classifier were used to produce decadal land use/land cover (LULC) maps. Changes in LULC and spatial pattern of urban expansion were analysed by post-classification change detection and spatial metrics, respectively. The results showed that in the periods 1984–1994, 1994–2004, and 2004–2014, the built-up area increased annually by 10%, 9%, and 8%, respectively; with an average annual increment of 19% (100 ha year?1), from 531 ha in 1984 to 3524 ha in 2014. Between 1984 and 2014, about 88% of the gain in built-up area was from conversion of agricultural lands, which decreased by 39%. Extension of existing urban areas was the dominant growth type, which accounted for 54%, 75%, and 81% of the total new development during 1984–1994, 1994–2004, and 2004–2014, respectively. The spatial metrics analyses revealed urban sprawl, with increased heterogeneity and gradual dispersion in the outskirts of the city. The per capita land consumption rate (ha per person) increased from 0.009 in 1984 to 0.014 in 2014, indicating low density urban growth. Based on the prediction result, the current (2014) built-up area will double by 2035, and this is likely to have multiple socioeconomic and environmental consequences unless sustainable urban planning and development policies are devised.  相似文献

Background  

Food insecurity not only affects physical growth and health of children but also their intellectual development, school attendance and academic performance. However, most evidences are based on studies in high income countries. Although food insecurity is common in Ethiopia, to what extent it affects school attendance and educational attainment of adolescents is not explored. We hypothesized that food insecure adolescents would be more likely to be absent from school and have lower grades attained after 1 year compared to their food secure peers.  相似文献

A systematic quantitative method for the selection of models for the high-conversion free radical polymerization exhibiting gel and glass effects has been developed. Four representative models were selected from the literature and were compared on the basis of the same experimental data. All models describe the isothermal time-conversion data over the entire conversion range for a single type and loading of initiator well. Models that are not considering the effect of molecular weight of the polymers on the diffusion of macro radicals fail to describe the time-conversion data if the concentration of the initiator varies at the same time. By simultaneous fitting of the conversion and polymerization degree data it was shown that the Marten-Hamielec model and its extended form (Panke-Stickler-Hamielec model) were not able to describe the number average polymerization degree Pn at the final conversion, where the glass effect occurs. This occurred because both models neglect the change of the radical efficiency f in this region, which has more effect on Pn than the change of the propagation rate coefficient (see part II of this series). © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
