Performance characterization of a small-capacity thermoacoustic cooler for air-conditioning applications

The performance of a working prototype, operated with and without water flow through the heat exchangers, was measured and found to be in reasonably close agreement to predictions from a simulation code, DELTAE, based on linear thermoacoustic theory. Further analysis and DELTAE simulations showed that the coefficient of performance may be significantly reduced when the stack temperature profile becomes non-linear, i.e. when the system is operated for a temperature span smaller than the optimal value for a given stack length. Guidelines to avoid this condition are provided.     

Stability Analysis of a Nonlinear Blister Test

The Griffith and stability criteria for the blister test have been derived from thermodynamic arguments. The Griffith criterion includes the stored energy in the blister as well as the interfacial energy change associated with debonding. Based on these criteria an analysis is given of a blister test with a neo-Hookian overlayer debonding from a rigid substrate. A closed analytic form for the strain energy release rate, G, is obtained valid for large elastic deformation of a thin circular film. The criteria derived indicate that quasi-static debonding of the blister is always stable, independent of the interfacial energies and the extent of blister deformation.     

Zr K-edge XAS study on ZrO<Subscript>2</Subscript>-pillared aluminosilicate

The ZrO₂-pillared clay with high acidic property has been prepared by reacting 1 wt% colloidal suspension of Na⁺-montmorillonite with 1 N aqueous solution of ZrOCl₂·8H₂O and by subsequent heating. The evolution of local structure around zirconium of the intercalant stabilized in-between aluminosilicate layers upon intercalating, drying, and pillaring condition has been systematically studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and compared to those of reference compounds such as ZrO₂, and ZrOCl₂ · 8H₂O and its 1 N aqueous solution. The intercalated zirconium species was identified as the Zr-tetramer, [Zr₄(OH)₁₄(H₂O)₁₀]²⁺, with an average molecular volume of 10 × 10 Å² and a thickness of 4.5 Å. Also it becomes more condensed upon drying and eventually transforms to a zirconium oxide pillar upon calcination.     

Silica-coated dual-tube zirconia induction furnace for high-strength optical-fibre production

The dual-wall zirconia induction furnace consists of an inner susceptor tube and an outer insulation tube. The centre piece of the inner tube is coated with a thin silica film. The performance of the newly designed furnace was evaluated in terms of the strength of drawn fibres. The proof test of 47 km length of fibre demonstrated superb strength results, yielding the average survival length at 1·4 GN/m2 (200 klb in?2) to be ~8 km.     

Effects of spin inaccuracy on PMD reduction in spun fibers

Spinning a fiber is the most viable and used technique to reduce polarization mode dispersion (PMD). Many papers have shown that by properly tuning the spin parameters, the differential group delay (DGD) of spun fibers can be greatly reduced. However, the precision with which these optimal profiles are practically implemented may be a problem. In this paper, we perform a statistical analysis of the effects that spin inaccuracy may have on fiber PMD, quantifying how the random uncertainty on spin parameters impairs the DGD. Some preliminary experimental results about spin-induced PMD reduction are also reported.     

Development of core mode blocker with H/sub 2/-loaded Ge-B codoped fibres

A novel fabrication method of the core mode blocker by exposing H/sub 2/-loaded Ge-B codoped fibres to local electric arc discharge for application to the LPFGs-based tunable all-fibre bandpass filter with 6.5 nm bandwidth and 40 nm tuning range is presented.
