This review of the literature on varietal change in sub-Saharan Africa looks in detail at adoption of new varieties of bananas in Uganda, cassava in Nigeria, potato in Kenya, sweetpotato in Uganda and yams in Côte d’Ivoire. The review explored three hypotheses about drivers of varietal change. There was a strong confirmation for the hypothesis that insufficient priority given to consumer-preferred traits by breeding programmes contributes to the limited uptake of modern varieties (MVs) and low varietal turnover. Lack of evidence meant the second hypothesis of insufficient attention to understanding and responding to gender differences in consumer preferences for quality and post-harvest traits was unresolved. The evidence on the third hypothesis about the informal seed system contributing to slow uptake of MVs was mixed. In some cases, the informal system has contributed to rapid uptake of MVs, but often it appears to be a barrier with inconsistent varietal naming a major challenge.  相似文献

Multiple computational methods for modeling dislocations are implemented within a high-throughput calculation framework allowing for rigorous investigations comparing the methodologies. Focusing on aluminum edge dislocations, 21 classical aluminum interatomic potentials are used to directly model dislocation core structures using molecular dynamics and to provide input data for solving the semidiscrete variational Peierls–Nabarro dislocation model. The predicted dislocation core spreading obtained from both computational methods shows similar trends across the potentials. Additionally, tests are done to rigorously determine if a recent correction to the Peierls–Nabarro model results in better agreement with the atomistic calculations.  相似文献

An optical method allowing the characterization of melt flow instabilities typically occurring during an extrusion process of polymers and polymer compounds is presented. It is based on a camera-acquired image of the extruded compound with a reference length scale. Application of image processing and transformation of the calibrated image to the frequency domain yields the magnitude spectrum of the instability. The effectiveness of the before mentioned approach is shown on Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compounds, covering a wide range of silica filler content, extruded through a Göttfert capillary rheometer. The results of the image-based analysis are compared with the results from the sharkskin option, a series of highly sensitive pressure transducers installed inside the rheometer. Produced water, which is co-produced during oil and gas manufacturing, represents one of the largest sources of oily wastewaters. Therefore, treatment of this produced water may improve the economic viability and lead to a new source of water for beneficial use. In this study a submerged hollow fiber membrane bioreactor (MBR) has been studied experimentally for the treatment of brackish oil and natural gas field produced water. This type of wastewater is also characterized with relatively moderate to high amount of salt, oil and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH). However, the bacteria which are growing in conventional activated sludge and MBR cannot survive at these strict conditions, therefore acclimation of the bacteria is of vital importance. The performance of the biological system, membrane permeability, the rate and extent of TPH biodegradability have been investigated under different sludge age and F/M ratios. The results obtained by gas chromatography analyses showed that the MBR system could be very effective in the removal of TPH from produced water and a significant improvement in the effluent quality was achieved.  相似文献

The findings regarding the impact of Internet use on well-being are mixed and studies are often criticized due to small samples and lack of consistency in measurement. Fewer studies have examined this issue among older adults. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between Internet use and depression among retired Americans age 50 years or older. Using data from the Health and Retirement Survey, the study estimates the relationship between Internet use and depression through combined use of regression and propensity score methodologies. All empirical methods indicate a positive contribution of Internet use to mental well-being of retired older adults (?50 years), reducing depression categorization by approximately 20–28%.  相似文献

Poly(vinyl acetate-co-butyl acrylate) latexes having oligomeric N-methylol acrylamide were prepared by semi-continuous emulsion polymerization. The effects of new protective colloid and comonomer ratios on the physicochemical and colloidal properties of latexes were investigated. The changes in homopolymer and copolymer latexes were determined by measuring viscosity, particle size, molecular weight (MW), molecular weight distribution (MWD), and surface tension. [`(M)]n \bar{M}_{n} values of copolymer latexes were found to be lower than the MWs of the poly(vinyl acetate) and poly(butyl acrylate) homopolymers. In general, [`(M)]n \bar{M}_{n} and [`(M)]\textw \bar{M}_{\text{w}} values of copolymer latexes changed irregularly with increasing BuA ratio in the copolymer composition.  相似文献

Poly(vinyl acetate-co-butyl acrylate) latexes were prepared by using semi-continuous emulsion polymerization method in presence of two different protective colloids which were oligomeric N-methylol acrylamide and conventional poly(vinyl alcohol). The effects of these protective colloids on colloidal, surface and film properties of latexes were examined. Poly(vinyl acetate-co-butyl acrylate) synthesized with oligomeric N-methylol acrylamide, which was characterized by FT-IR, NMR and MALDI-TOF MS, was found to have lower viscosity, finer particle size, better latex stability, lower polydispersity, higher Tg and better film forming behavior compared to those synthesized from the poly(vinyl alcohol).  相似文献

Although several measures of obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms exist, most are limited in that they are not consistent with the most recent empirical findings on the nature and dimensional structure of obsessions and compulsions. In the present research, the authors developed and evaluated a measure called the Dimensional Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (DOCS) to address limitations of existing OC symptom measures. The DOCS is a 20-item measure that assesses the four dimensions of OC symptoms most reliably replicated in previous structural research. Factorial validity of the DOCS was supported by exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of 3 samples, including individuals with OC disorder, those with other anxiety disorders, and nonclinical individuals. Scores on the DOCS displayed good performance on indices of reliability and validity, as well as sensitivity to treatment and diagnostic sensitivity, and hold promise as a measure of OC symptoms in clinical and research settings. Molecular dynamics has been used to simulate the uniaxial compression of single crystal silicon nanospheres using the Tersoff potential. The resulting yield behavior is shown to vary with changes in temperature, sphere size, and crystallographic orientation with respect to the loading direction. Only compression along the [1 0 0] crystallographic direction resulted in the formation of the β-Sn phase. A temperature dependent hardening response is observed in all orientations independent of the β-Sn phase transformation. Dislocation activity is detected at elevated temperatures in the largest sphere indicating a critical temperature and size for nucleation. Consequences of these dislocations to simulating strength properties at the nanoscale are discussed.  相似文献
