Silicon-based polymers evolve into refractory ceramics when heated gradually up to ~1000°C. The conversion is accompanied by the loss of gaseous species, and by a two-fold increase in density. The shrinkage can produce microcracks if the heating rate is too high, or if the specimen is too thick. This communication builds on earlier work whereby the measurement of gas evolution, and its relationship with viscous flow, are related to the onset of fracture in disk-shaped green (polymer) samples. The onset is determined as a function of the thickness of the disks, and of the heating rate. The results are presented in the form of a processing map. The overlay with gas evolution, and strain-rate measurements, suggest that fracture initiates with the release of hydrogen and methane, starting at temperatures near 750°C.  相似文献

The coupling between biomass gasification and Solid Oxide Fuel Cells can represent a sustainable and efficient system for electricity production. This work aims to develop a preliminary model for the operation of a tubular, electrolyte-supported fuel cell (SOFC) fed by a syngas mixture. The fuel required by the SOFC system is produced inside the energy generator box from an integrated biomass gasification system. This study stems from the European DB-SOFC project, that proposed the exploitation of the abundant biomasses deriving from agricultural residues for energetic purposes (as from olive oil and wine production). In this study, the main processes have been simulated to find a possible configuration to obtain a power value of 200 W. 25 cells were used in the model to produce the required power. The results showed that at 0.7 V it is possible to achieve 12.3 W, when the biomass gasification was integrated into the SOFC box, while it was possible to achieve 9.6 W when the system was fed by externally produced syngas.  相似文献

The work reported in this article describes the research advances and the lessons learned by the Robotics, Perception and Real‐Time group over a decade of research in the field of ground robotics in confined environments. This study has primarily focused on localization, navigation, and communications in tunnel‐like environments. As will be discussed, this type of environment presents several special characteristics that often make well‐established techniques fail. The aim is to share, in an open way, the experience, errors, and successes of this group with the robotics community so that those that work in such environments can avoid (some of) the errors made. At the very least, these findings can be readily taken into account when designing a solution, without needing to sift through the technical details found in the papers cited within this text.  相似文献

Cancer is going to be the first cause of mortality worldwide in the 21th century. It is considered a multifactorial disease that results from the combined influence of many genetic aberrations, leading to abnormal cell proliferation. As microtubules are strongly implicated in cellular growth, they represent an important target for cancer treatment. The well-known microtubule-targeting agents (MTAs) including paclitaxel, colchicine and vinca alkaloids are commonly used in the treatment of various cancers. However, adverse effects and drug resistance are major limitations in their clinical use. To find new candidates able to induce microtubule alteration with reduced toxic effects or drug resistance, we studied a small new series of derivatives that present imidazolinic, guanidinic, thioureidic and hydrazinic groups ( 1 – 9 ). All the compounds were tested for their antitumor activity against a panel of six tumoral cell models. In particular, compound 8 (nonane-1,9-diyl-bis-S-amidinothiourea dihydrobromide) showed the lowest IC50 value against HeLa cells, together with a low cytotoxicity for normal cells. This compound was able to induce the apoptotic mitochondrial pathway and inhibited tubulin polymerization with a similar efficacy to vinblastine and nocodazole. Taken together, these promising biological properties make compound 8 useful for the development of novel therapeutic approaches in cancer treatment.  相似文献

DNA can experience “replication stress”, an important source of genome instability, induced by various external or endogenous impediments that slow down or stall DNA synthesis. While genome instability is largely documented to favor both tumor formation and heterogeneity, as well as drug resistance, conversely, excessive instability appears to suppress tumorigenesis and is associated with improved prognosis. These findings support the view that karyotypic diversity, necessary to adapt to selective pressures, may be limited in tumors so as to reduce the risk of excessive instability. This review aims to highlight the contribution of specialized DNA polymerases in limiting extreme genetic instability by allowing DNA replication to occur even in the presence of DNA damage, to either avoid broken forks or favor their repair after collapse. These mechanisms and their key regulators Rad18 and Polθ not only offer diversity and evolutionary advantage by increasing mutagenic events, but also provide cancer cells with a way to escape anti-cancer therapies that target replication forks.  相似文献

Introduction: A reliable method of intradialysis calcium mass balance quantification is far from been established. We herein investigated the use of a single‐pool variable‐volume Calcium kinetic model to assess calcium mass balance in chronic and stable dialysis patients. Methods: Thirty‐four patients on thrice‐weekly HD were studied during 240 dialysis sessions. All patients were dialyzed with a nominal total calcium concentration of 1.50 mmol/L. The main assumption of the model is that the calcium distribution volume is equal to the extracellular volume during dialysis. This hypothesis is assumed valid if measured and predicted end dialysis plasma water ionized calcium concentrations are equal. A difference between predicted and measured end‐dialysis ionized plasma water calcium concentration is a deviation on our main hypothesis, meaning that a substantial amount of calcium is exchanged between the extracellular volume and a nonmodeled compartment. Findings: The difference between predicted and measured values was 0.02 mmol/L (range ?0.08:0.16 mmol/L). With a mean ionized dialysate calcium concentration of 1.25 mmol/L, calcium mass balance was on average negative (mean ± SD ?0.84 ± 1.33 mmol, range ?5.42:2.75). Predialysis ionized plasma water concentration and total ultrafiltrate were the most important predictors of calcium mass balance. A significant mobilization of calcium from the extracellular pool to a nonmodeled pool was calculated in a group of patients. Discussion: The proposed single pool variable‐volume Calcium kinetic model is adequate for prediction and quantification of intradialysis calcium mass balance, it can evaluate the eventual calcium transfer outside the extracellular pool in clinical practice.  相似文献

Soil-washing design methodology for a lead-contaminated sandy-soil   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Soils located near high traffic roadways, particularly where renovations have taken place, typically exhibit elevated levels of trace metals in the upper soil horizon. Regulators are currently seeking an efficient method of site characterization and treatment system design which will lend itself to timely and environmentally efficacious clean-up. The soil investigated in this study was a silty sand collected near a bridge abutment for a major interstate highway. The soil had a total lead content of 1392 mg/kg. In addition, the soil contained a considerable fraction of organic carbon (approximately 6.3%). A sequential chemical extraction indicated that a fraction of contaminants were in labile soil phases and thus amenable to chemical extraction (soil-washing). A soil washing design methodology is presented based on surface chemistry and equilibrium stage operation. In this work, a double layer surface complexation model was used to describe equilibrium sorption behavior and a preliminary design of an ex-situ counter-current equilibrium stage extraction process is presented. Model calibration was conducted using sorption data obtained from a 1:40 solid to liquid ratio (s/l), adsorption edge. Model validation was accomplished with batch titration data and a 1:20 s/l, adsorption edge. The model accurately predicted leachable lead concentrations over a wide pH range. The required number of ideal equilibrium stages was highly sensitive to pH.  相似文献

The Maggiore Valley well field plays a fundamental role in supplying drinking water to a large territory of the Piedmont (north-western Italy). However, an increasing demand for water has led to the overexploitation of the groundwater resources. This situation has caused a progressive drawdown of the piezometric level (locally, up to 0.8 m/year), a spatial reduction in the artesian zone, localised land subsidence and damage to wells. The main purpose of this study was the development of a groundwater flow model of the area for analysing the aquifer response to various pumping strategies. Initially, the groundwater flow simulation (achieved by the application of the MODFLOW code) was calibrated satisfactorily. Then, the groundwater response to four scenarios was simulated to explore the best option to mitigate the problem. In three of the scenarios, a withdrawal reduction of 110 l/s was simulated, whilst considering various relocation options for extraction within the well field. The fourth scenario simulated a withdrawal reduction of 150 l/s; this option also assumed a supplementary water supply from the Monferrato Aqueduct, located north of the study area. All the simulations provided an increase in the piezometric level; in some instances, up to 30 m. Based on these simulations, the most promising management strategy for the Maggiore Valley well field would seem to be the option using a supplementary feed from the Monferrato Aqueduct. In this instance, the predicted piezometric level rise would be up to 25 m; this option also precludes the need for drilling additional wells.  相似文献
