A low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) material system has been used to develop a protype field emission cathode structure for use in an experimental magnetron oscillator. The structure is designed for used with 30 gated field emission array (GFEA) die electrically connected through silver metal traces and electrical vias. To approximate a cylinder, the cathode structure (48 mm long and 13.7 mm in diameter) is comprised of 10 faceted plates which cover the GFEA dies. Slits in the facet plates allow electron injection. The GFEA die (3 mm × 8 mm) are placed in axial columns of 3 and spaced azimuthally around a cylindrical support structure in a staggered configuration resulting in 10 azimuthal locations. LTCC manufacturing techniques were developed in order to fabricate the newly designed cathode with seven layers wrapped to form the cylinder with electrical traces and vias. Two different cathode wrapping techniques and two different via filling techniques were studied and compared. Two different facet plate manufacturing techniques were studied. Finally, four different support stand configurations for firing the cylindrical structure were also compared with a square post stand having the best circularity and linearity measurements of the fired structure.  相似文献

Hydrologic linkages among coastal wetland and nearshore areas allow coastal fish to move among the habitats, which has led to a variety of habitat use patterns. We determined nutritional support of coastal fishes from 12 wetland-nearshore habitat pairs using stable isotope analyses, which revealed differences among species and systems in multi-habitat use. Substantial (proportions?>?0.30) nutrition often came from the habitat other than that in which fish were captured. Nearshore subsidies to coastal wetlands indicate wetlands are not exclusively exporters of energy and materials; rather, there is reciprocity in the mutual energetic support of nearshore and wetland food webs. Coastal wetland hydrogeomorphology influenced the amount of multi-habitat use by coastal fishes. Fishes from systems with relatively open interfaces between wetland and nearshore habitats exhibited less nutritional reliance on the habitat in which they were captured, and higher use of resources from the adjacent habitat. Comparisons of stable isotope analyses of nutrition with otolith analyses of occupancy indicated nutritional sources often corresponded with habitat occupancy; however, disparities among place of capture, otolith analyses, and nutritional analyses indicated differences in the types of support those analyses inform. Disparities between occupancy information and nutritional information can stem from movements for support functions other than foraging. Together, occupancy information from otolith microchemistry and nutritional information from stable isotope analyses provide complementary measures of the use of multiple habitats by mobile consumers. This work underscores the importance of protecting or restoring a diversity of coastal habitats and the hydrologic linkages among them.  相似文献

Access to electricity is still a challenge in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. In Nigeria, over 70% of the rural dwellers do not have access to electricity. The purpose of this paper is to examine the potential of a smart microgrid for off-grid rural electrification in Nigeria. A combination of design thinking and model-based design methodology is employed to select a suitable microgrid configuration and to develop a smart microgrid model. A system consisting of a solar photovoltaic array, battery energy storage and a diesel generator is selected, and the model is developed in Simulink. Demand data from 10 rural communities in Nigeria are used to validate the performance of the model and the potential for demand management is considered. The use of energy efficient light bulbs is found to reduce the peak electricity demand of the case study communities by 42 to 76%. Combining the proposed system with the use of LED bulbs makes the system to have 56 to 81% less net present cost than a system with a diesel generator alone and incandescent light bulbs. The proposed smart microgrid is found to be more suitable for off-grid rural electrification in Nigeria than diesel generators which are currently used for off-grid electrification in Nigeria.  相似文献

Abstract

Unexpected fouling in condensers on Central Electricity Generating Board power stations operating on the river Trent in the UK in the 1970s prompted an extensive investigation of the phenomenon. Fouling was caused by deposition of calcium phosphate rich scale on the cooling water side. A fouling test rig was specially constructed to study the performance of different chemical treatments. The rig ran two tubes in parallel, one with undosed water, and the latter’s data sets from over 100 “control” tests were analyzed to determine the mechanism and rate of fouling. The trends could not be explained in terms of conventional scaling indices. Insight into the mechanism was provided by separating precipitation (loss from solution) and deposition (adhesion of some of the precipitated mass to the heated surface): scaling was found to be caused by the deposition of particulates in the recirculating cooling water, driven by the change in pH as the water went through the evaporative cooling stage. Quantitative expressions for fouling were generated from tests on 1.83?m long tubes and were found to give a reasonable prediction of the fouling behavior observed on a full sized (18.3?m long) single condenser tube on an operating condenser. The results indicated that recirculating water systems need to be approached very differently to once-through systems, and the use of scaling indices for such systems is not recommended.  相似文献

The enzyme lumazine synthase (LS) has been engineered to self-assemble into hollow-shell structures that encapsulate unnatural cargo proteins through complementary electrostatic interactions. Herein, we show that a negatively supercharged LS variant can also form organic–inorganic hybrids with gold nanomaterials. Simple mixing of LS pentamers with positively charged gold nanocrystals in aqueous buffer spontaneously affords protein-shelled gold cores. The procedure works well with differently sized and shaped gold nanocrystals, and the resulting shelled complexes exhibit dramatically enhanced colloidal stability over a wide range of pH (4.0–10.0) and at high ionic strength (up to 1 m NaCl). They are even stable over days upon dilution in buffer. Self-assembly of engineered LS shells in this way offers an easy and attractive alternative to commonly used ligand-exchange methods for stabilizing inorganic nanomaterials.  相似文献

The enhancement of coherent flow-like structures is desired for many image processing tasks, such as segmentation and feature detection. This task can be accomplished in a natural way by adopting anisotropic diffusion filtering using a diffusion matrix adapted to the local structure. This method is referred to as coherence-enhancing diffusion (CED). The performance of CED can be analyzed by observing the evolution of the orientation field (OF) associated with an evolving diffusion matrix. It was revealed from a series of experiments that the final OF from a CED-enhanced image sometimes strays from its true underlying OF (marked by a human expert), degrading its performance. In this paper, a strategy is proposed which repeatedly cleans the OF associated with a diffusion matrix. Thus, for every iteration of CED, its OF is diffused separately until it converges and is then fed back to the CED process to move forward. This hypothesis is tested with the motive of getting an enhanced CED performance. The proposed scheme is validated using fingerprint data, and their numerical results are displayed.  相似文献

Magnetic nanoparticles have been employed to capture pathogens for many biological applications; however, optimal particle sizes have been determined empirically in specific capturing protocols. Here, a theoretical model that simulates capture of bacteria is described and used to calculate bacterial collision frequencies and magnetophoretic properties for a range of particle sizes. The model predicts that particles with a diameter of 460 nm should produce optimal separation of bacteria in buffer flowing at 1 L h−1. Validating the predictive power of the model, Staphylococcus aureus is separated from buffer and blood flowing through magnetic capture devices using six different sizes of magnetic particles. Experimental magnetic separation in buffer conditions confirms that particles with a diameter closest to the predicted optimal particle size provide the most effective capture. Modeling the capturing process in plasma and blood by introducing empirical constants (ce), which integrate the interfering effects of biological components on the binding kinetics of magnetic beads to bacteria, smaller beads with 50 nm diameters are predicted that exhibit maximum magnetic separation of bacteria from blood and experimentally validated this trend. The predictive power of the model suggests its utility for the future design of magnetic separation for diagnostic and therapeutic applications.  相似文献
